Q&A: Romola Garai

bel eye roll
Romola Garai, 30, was born in Hong Kong. She dropped out of university to appear in the TV film The Last Of The Blonde Bombshells, and went on to star in the 2003 film I Capture The Castle and 2004's Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. More recently, she appeared in Atonement and One Day. She was Bafta-nominated for her role in the BBC's The Crimson Petal And The White and played Bel in The Hour (yeah, I'm not liking this being in the past tense). A campaigner for women's rights, she supports the International Rescue Committee's Wake Up campaign. She is expecting a baby with the actor Sam Hoare.

When were you happiest?
In the orange blossom-filled streets of Seville, snogging on a park bench.

What is your greatest fear?
A The Road-style apocalypse.

Which living person do you most admire, and why?
S, who sees the good in everyone and hears both sides to every story.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I definitely have a temper.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Apathy.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
I cheated at the Model United Nations when I was 13 and had to get up and apologise in front of the whole conference.

Property aside, what's the most expensive thing you've bought?
My short film – turns out 35mm is still pretty pricy!

What makes you unhappy?
The position of women in the world.

What is your favourite smell?
A sweaty man's skin.

What is your most unappealing habit?
Saying that people are being deliberately obtuse when they don't agree with me.

What is the worst thing anyone's said to you?
That I was selfish... but it was true.

Who would play you in the film of your life?
I'd like it to be Julia Davis, but mostly people say I look like a poor man's Meg Ryan.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I'm very happy with the way I look.

To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why?
To those who had the misfortune of being in a relationship with me when I was young, crazy and selfish.

What or who is the love of your life?
S and baby.

What does love feel like?
Like when you laugh so hard that you cry.

Which living person do you most despise, and why?
I've worked with actors who tell everyone what to do in the scene – that makes me go pretty atomic.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
"It's because I'm a woman."

What has been your biggest disappointment?
Realising I was never going to make it big in professional swing dance.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I'd like the fathers of the major religions to make their position on the subjugation of women clearer.

How do you relax?
With This American Life on and cooking from the Ottolenghi cookbook.

What song would you like played at your funeral?
Hey Ya, by OutKast.

Tell us a joke
Jeremy Hunt.

Tell us a secret
I'm always telling people I've seen films that I haven't seen.

Source.

quiet_storm 2nd-Feb-2013 09:58 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen her in anything but the hour but loved her. She works those outfits.

Fuck if it doesn't come back.
jackal_onassis 2nd-Feb-2013 11:46 pm (UTC)

fabouluz 2nd-Feb-2013 09:59 pm (UTC)

juteux 2nd-Feb-2013 10:00 pm (UTC)
If The Hour doesn't come back I will seriously go mental.
tusiaczek87 2nd-Feb-2013 10:06 pm (UTC)
they can't do that to me, that would like physical pain
zoaster_toaster 2nd-Feb-2013 11:34 pm (UTC)
Amen, the s2 finale killed me.
ragdoll246 3rd-Feb-2013 01:00 am (UTC)

alicederanged 3rd-Feb-2013 04:11 am (UTC)
Seriously. They CANNOT end it like that.
fauxkaren 2nd-Feb-2013 10:02 pm (UTC)
Obligatory "I WANT A THIRD SERIES OF THE HOUR" comment.

But I've admired Romola as an actress since Daniel Deronda. She's gr8.
jaimelannister 2nd-Feb-2013 10:10 pm (UTC)
I don't think I ever watched the third part of that.

I did LOVE the novel though, definitely preferred it to Middlemarch, if only for Gwen.

PLUS HUGH DANCY. I used to live next to his parents. /csb
ms_mmelissa 2nd-Feb-2013 10:54 pm (UTC)
Yes, this is what made me a Romola stan too!
kindafunnysad 2nd-Feb-2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
i've only seen her in atonement and i find her to be quite dull, especially compared to saoirse ronan
tusiaczek87 2nd-Feb-2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
love her since forever but i need to add my obligatory comment about season 3 of the hour that must happen if not i will hurt somebody or myself or both!!

is hbo doing some big mini series/tv movie this year? or can just the hour slay everything at emmys since it was the best show in 2012?
jaimelannister 2nd-Feb-2013 10:11 pm (UTC)
IDK about HBO, but the second series of The Hour was perfect to me.
tusiaczek87 2nd-Feb-2013 10:21 pm (UTC)
it literally was perfect
_quietriot_ 2nd-Feb-2013 10:12 pm (UTC)
The Only thing I've seen her in is Atonement. I still haven't watched The Hour, although I def want to.

Anyway, I like Romola. She says a lot of smart stuff in her interviews.
jaimelannister 2nd-Feb-2013 10:13 pm (UTC)
wow have none of you seen I Capture the Castle??
mrscantelope 2nd-Feb-2013 10:27 pm (UTC)
I have it and I love it so much. Everyone is so good in it.
ms_mmelissa 2nd-Feb-2013 10:56 pm (UTC)
I have! I've seen a ton of stuff she's been in: Daniel Deronda, ICtC, Angel, Inside I'm Dancing, Scoop, Nicholas Nickelby, Dirty Dancing 2, The Hour, etc.
jaimelannister 2nd-Feb-2013 11:00 pm (UTC)
I've only seen ICtC, Daniel Deronda (2/3), Atonement, NN, The Hour and Emma. That's not too bad, actually.
amkf 2nd-Feb-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
That's a really adorable movie. Rose Byrne is darling in it as well.
zoaster_toaster 2nd-Feb-2013 11:35 pm (UTC)
She was flawless in that.
bohhead 2nd-Feb-2013 11:54 pm (UTC)
i want to see it but i'm afraid i'd hate it cuz i love the book so much..
dirtyxboots 2nd-Feb-2013 11:57 pm (UTC)
saw it a few months ago but I found it kinda dull =/
pimpmytardis 3rd-Feb-2013 12:00 am (UTC)
I have, but it's not one of my favorites. Haven't seen it in a long time though.

I saw Romola in the RSC King Lear/Seagull tour and it she was amazing. Especially in Seagull.
winegums 3rd-Feb-2013 12:47 am (UTC)
It's what turned me into a stan so yes. (also, I found Henry Cavill hot in that, idg the fuss about him now but back then he was adorable).
autochaotic 3rd-Feb-2013 02:16 pm (UTC)
Yes! It's really cute. Rose Byrne is also in it and I've confirmed that she is immortal.
aisling_ducks 2nd-Feb-2013 10:14 pm (UTC)
I love this girl. She was so great in BBCs 2009 adaptation of Emma.

Also if The Hour doesn't come back I will flip.
ladysherlock 2nd-Feb-2013 10:16 pm (UTC)
I loved it. And Emma's my least favourite Austen novel.
aisling_ducks 2nd-Feb-2013 10:22 pm (UTC)
Same. Well, I was pretty indifferent to the novel.

Her and Johnny Lee Miller just fit together so well. Great chemistry.
jaimelannister 2nd-Feb-2013 10:28 pm (UTC)
I didn't like her Emma when I watched it back then.

I'll have to try it again, because what with The Hour and Elementary I very much like her & JLM
speakrzrthumpin 2nd-Feb-2013 10:15 pm (UTC)
Wait wait wait, there won't be a third series of The Hour? :(
jaimelannister 2nd-Feb-2013 10:28 pm (UTC)
it's been neither confirmed or denied

WHY WON'T YOU JUST SAY SOMETHING BBC
opusdeihohoho 2nd-Feb-2013 10:18 pm (UTC)
aw i was just thinking about her
<3
hotdog 2nd-Feb-2013 10:28 pm (UTC)
omg a post about my queen ♡

mrscantelope 2nd-Feb-2013 10:28 pm (UTC)
Echoing everyone else--she is so great and I DEMAND a third series of The Hour. The second finale nearly broke me.
sitakhet 2nd-Feb-2013 10:28 pm (UTC)
Poor man's Meg Ryan? Are these people blind?
mrscantelope 2nd-Feb-2013 10:31 pm (UTC)
I heard she hasn't been able to "make it" in America because she is "too big." Makes me RAGE.
jaimelannister 2nd-Feb-2013 10:41 pm (UTC)
WTF

this is crazy

she has a lovely figure
ms_mmelissa 2nd-Feb-2013 11:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, she said on Dirty Dancing they were always telling her she was too fat and to eat less (which is funny because I remember watching that movie and thinking she looked so slender) so she gave up on Hollywood after that. I'm glad she seems to have enough self-esteem to stay strong and walk away from that kind of pressure. Could not have been easy.

She's still managed to carve out a nice career for herself just doing British stuff though.
bohhead 2nd-Feb-2013 11:55 pm (UTC)
ugh fucking sizeists
winegums 3rd-Feb-2013 12:53 am (UTC)
I hate Hollywood.

This is why Jennifer Lawrence says she's obese by Hollywood standards, because by their standards, anyone over a size 2 is chubby.

I remember when she said the Havana Nights (love that movie despite its cheesiness) producers told her to lose weight, and all I could think was what bs they must be full of because her body was perfect and looked so amazing in the costumes she had in that film.
