I think that both Sherlock and Gregson are hypocrites in this situation. I remember that Sherlock was so disappointed/annoyed with the planted evidence and yet he'll take matters into his own hands and not find anything wrong with it. And then Gregson is upset that Sherlock took M and was planning to kill him when he didn't do anything after the planted evidence bit came out.
