Bronys are upset because one of the characters is becoming an alicorn

MLP-PRINCESS_510x317Princess-obsessed children everywhere will be thrilled to learn that Twilight Sparkle — the purple unicorn at the center of The Hub’s My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic — is going to earn a pair of royal wings and a spiffy tiara in the cartoon’s upcoming season finale. But there’s one group that’s feeling less than excited at the prospect of Twilight becoming a princess: Bronies, the adolescent and adult fans of the show whose equine passion has become its very own subculture.

Shortly after EW broke the news of Twilight’s transformation this Tuesday, the fan community exploded into a flurry of commentary — most of it negative. “If this true they may have very well jumped the shark on this once awesome series. Such a shame,” one commenter wrote on our original post. Others were a little more vehement: “Hasbro what R U doing?!…Hasbro….STOP!!!”; “Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”; “Oh god..why??? WHY????” The backlash has been even worse on fan sites like Equestria Daily (where the original post about Twilight’s princessification has drawn over 2,500 comments) and Reddit’s pony-centric message board (where hundreds of fans have expressed fervent hopes that the royal metamorphosis isn’t permanent.)

So why, exactly, are bronies getting their bridles in a twist?  “It’s just your typical overreaction to something changing in your favorite series,” Equestria Daily founder Sethisto (real name: Shaun Scotellaro) tells EW. There is, however, a little more to this specific outcry: “I think the main thing is that it’s happening to a character so many people connect to. Twilight Sparkle, she’s more of a nerd. She’s like all of us, that geeky nerd who reads books and gets all excited about stupid stuff.” The prospect of the show’s audience surrogate getting all gussied up, then, sort of feels like a slap in the face to MLP‘s grown-up fans. (A slap delivered by a hoof, no less.)

Then there’s the commercial angle. “A lot of people think [the princess transformation] was mainly Hasbro’s fault, just to get more toys out,” Sethisto says, noting that a similar backlash erupted before the show’s second season-ending “Royal Wedding” episode — “Cadance was a pretty pink alicorn princess. That’s, like, the exact opposite of what we wanted.”

But in the end, fans ended up loving season 2′s conclusion — “They did it in a way that made it perfect, and I’m sure Hasbro sold a bunch of toys, so win-win for everyone,” laughs Sethisto — and the mane brony is confident that Twilight’s coronation won’t actually ruin the show he loves. “I like the idea of progressing to something new,” he says. “I think the show would get stale if it didn’t.”

And even if the princess thing ends up causing bronies to abandon My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, they’ll have no reason to stop making fan videos, writing fan fiction, and composing MLP-inspired music. “We create so much on our own — like, all the background characters on the show have names and histories. They’re just like, Incidental Pony #1, and we give them a full storyline,” Sethisto says. College student Zachary Rich has even written and animated an entire “episode” of the series that looks nearly identical to The Hub’s cartoon. At this point, then, Friendship Is Magic itself may actually be incidental to the fan culture it has inspired.

Or maybe not. “I think [the fandom] could sustain itself for a while, but eventually people would get bored just because we don’t have any new canon to play with,” admits Sethisto. Perhaps better than anyone else, a brony knows not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Yeah, the thing is, there do exist some legit good artists, just like in every fandom, but good lord the ratio of good to bad is severely skewed bad wise
mirandagirll 31st-Jan-2013 11:11 pm (UTC)
Brony posts make me LOL for various reasons
punishermax 31st-Jan-2013 11:12 pm (UTC)

They lose a little punch when you realize like 90% of the comments are just weird meta trolling though
moustacherider 31st-Jan-2013 11:13 pm (UTC)
let's talk about the Japonies instead

francesbcobain 31st-Jan-2013 11:13 pm (UTC)

This was on Jeopardy? Link?
francesbcobain 1st-Feb-2013 02:38 am (UTC)
i don't have a linx sadly. all i know was the question was like 'bronies are adult hardcore fans of this children's show.'
batty_gal 31st-Jan-2013 11:15 pm (UTC)
Anything that pisses off Bronies is a win for me. Those fuckers are the worst.
lulufairybubble 31st-Jan-2013 11:18 pm (UTC)
These posts are always weird for me. I'm 28yrold female and I watch MLP. So it's always weird when people put adults down for watching the show.
lipsofdynamite 31st-Jan-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
Lol, I watch it, too. And my brother is a ~brony, but without the creepy pedophile-ness. We just like a lot of animated shows in general, tbh, whether it's South Park or Archer or something like MLP. I totally understand why people freak out about bronies in general, though.
lulufairybubble 31st-Jan-2013 11:31 pm (UTC)
I guess I don't know any of these horrible bronies. I just came to know that word as a male who liked the show. And I know plenty of guys that do but they are not creepy about it.
hollis1975 31st-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
there is just watching a cartoon and being a fan ad then these guys. i watch the cartoon ( mainly because i have a kid)and i enjoy it. i still have my own my little ponies from back in the 80s saved. these guys are just weird and want a cartoon mainly intended for little girls to be designed around their desires
champagnexdream 31st-Jan-2013 11:32 pm (UTC)
I'm 27 and I love it but yeahhhhh Bronies are fucking weird.
pikapika217 31st-Jan-2013 11:39 pm (UTC)
I'm a 25 year old male & I agree. I never really identified as a brony because my interest don't lie with a good portions of theirs but a few of my HS friends do & I doubt they involve themselves in the porn aspects because they only started watching it with their girlfriends
imnotasquirrel 1st-Feb-2013 12:01 am (UTC)
hey, i watched kim possible and loved it, and i still like watching the old cartoons i used to enjoy as a kid. the problem with bronies is how fucking entitled so many of them are. enjoy the show or not, but understand that you're the peripheral demographic. the show does not and should not cater to you! (general you, not you specifically)
kawaiiairbender 1st-Feb-2013 12:13 am (UTC)
I like the show too. It's cute and funny. I also love that the main characters are all females. (which I think it's great for little girls )It makes me think of Sailor Moon a bit

Don't worry. You're female so no one will excuse you of getting off on the ponies.
*shrugs*
That's just the way it is.

I'm trolling. I really do like the cartoon and bought the fashion ponies as they are as close to the old school MLP toys as this new series gets. It really wasn't until I saw a lot of the sick stuff did I really start to side-eye it. It's not just the r34, but the hypocritical nature of the brony fandom.

I don't want to get too preachy, but prejudiceismagic.tumblr.com really showcases the ugliness of the brony fandom.
davetvs 31st-Jan-2013 11:19 pm (UTC)
I don't understand why everyone is calling them creepy and making them out to be the scum of the Earth for watching this show. I've never seen it but if they like it and are passionate about it...who cares? It's not like gross fanfic was invented for this show either.

one_hoopy_frood 31st-Jan-2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
Did you see all of the pony porn on the last 3 pages of comments? That's the tame stuff.
superdogbiter 31st-Jan-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
isn't there porn for every cartoon though
I really hate the porn people of mlp but this isn't the only cartoon to have porn
punishermax 31st-Jan-2013 11:21 pm (UTC)
The major problem comes from the fact that the fandom is so rabid. It's not so much that they like a show for little kids, I love Gravity Falls, but the fact that the fandom is so...rancid in places.

The absolute biggest problem is that the sheer volume of awful gross rule 34 shit is so pervasive in the fandom that it's really fucking awful to think of little kids, who the show is meant for, stumbling across it.
iamspam99 31st-Jan-2013 11:24 pm (UTC)
They are creepy entitled fuckers who have co-opted one of the few shows aimed at little girls and made it all about their gross fetishes. They are by-and-large racist, sexist and all-round awful excuses for humans beings despite the show's tagline being "love and tolerance".
flunkifer 31st-Jan-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
they actually are scum of the Earth though

I don't know what it is, but adults who obsess over this show tend to be literally some of the worst people in existence and it has nothing to do with the fanfiction or the porn or anything
elstree 31st-Jan-2013 11:26 pm (UTC)
these guys think that because they are such big fans of the show the writers should cater to them instead of to the little kids (especially girls) who are the show's target audience. they get very angry when their grown-up man pony-lover needs are not met.
vivisexion 31st-Jan-2013 11:30 pm (UTC)
it's because they are creepy and the scum of the earth
noneformethanx 31st-Jan-2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
My son LOVES this show!
flunkifer 31st-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
if someone were to present me with a button that would erase a fandom from existence and guarantee that it will never again exist, I would erase bronies without even a semblance of a second thought
vivisexion 31st-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
agreed
wasabi_girl1 31st-Jan-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
So I actually watched a few episodes of this show and I LITERALLY do not understand what makes it ANY DIFFERENT from ANY OTHER kids show...?? Why do neckbeards all flock to this one idgi
punishermax 31st-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
It's a fad. One guy on 4chan said "Hey this show is cool" and it just snowballed into this weird never ending feedback loop.
wasabi_girl1 31st-Jan-2013 11:40 pm (UTC)
who was this one guy? Jesus?!!
kawaiiairbender 1st-Feb-2013 12:20 am (UTC)
I wonder about it too. I really like the show and maybe they think it's funny. I like it b/c it's funny, very cute(pastels everywhere) and I love that all the main characters are girls. I think that's great.

I can't imagine the two last points appeal to most guys though :/
vivisexion 31st-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
nothing and no one will ever convince me that i should take bronies seriously as human beings
pikapika217 31st-Jan-2013 11:34 pm (UTC)
I'm so torn on the straight male fandom for this show. I mean, it's great that there are tons of streams online for people who don't have 'the hub' and that eps are online within hours of original airings and that there is a subset of them who are normal guys while I get things like Big Macintosh shirts & cool color changing mugs for it.

At the same time, however, the anthro guys have ruined this for the target demographic and I am torn over whether or not to get my niece into it because who knows what she'd find when looking characters/toys up online XP

The brony set is, as a whole, entitled & often creepy and while I personally think her character was fine as is, Hasbro has been really great about the reinvention of this franchise as far as characterization goes. TS was always highlighted as being important to the main princess so something like this isn't all that far of a stretch & will be fine. If they are that upset then LEAVE but don't flounce as you do it.
cruel_fortuna 31st-Jan-2013 11:35 pm (UTC)
Really, ... seriously REALLY!?
If you want something to bitch & moan about - bitch about something like how Cartoon Networks fucks flaccid dick because they cancelled Young Justice & Green Lantern - now that's truly something fandom-related worthy of an outcry. But noo.... ugh.
