Fitness Post: You too can look like GOOP

Is Your Workout Making You Fat?

This week, I circle back to my partner and fitness guru Tracy Anderson as myself and various cohorts have some questions about diet and maximizing time spent in the gym. Some of these said cohorts have been training for marathons and spinning regularly with odd results and wanted some answers. Another has just a few last holiday pounds to shed. Tracy has very kindly provided us with her insights and a 15-minute workout to use as an add-on to your regular workout or to get you started. Either way, she's freaking awesome. And this week, just in time for Valentine's Day (or if you want to get a jump on Mother's Day), is our exclusive collaboration with one of my fave jewelry designers, Jen Meyer. Give (yourself) the mum necklace. You deserve it.;)

Love,
gp

Health-and-fitness post?

I started WW again a month ago with 19.6 lbs. to lose. I should be down around 5 total at my weigh-in Saturday. Stoked!

I am thinking of doing this from April 1 to 30 but I'm kinda scared... D: Anyone ever done it before?
http://whole9life.com/2012/08/the-whole30-program/

On a sad note, I got an MRI done on my knee yesterday...have a follow-up appointment next week. Hope it's nothing serious. Ruined my marathon dreams. :[ I want to run at least one, damn it!
julietislimited 31st-Jan-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
Do not eat legumes. This includes beans of all kinds (black, red, pinto, navy, white, kidney, lima, fava, etc.), peas, chickpeas, lentils, and peanuts. No peanut butter, either. This also includes all forms of soy – soy sauce, miso, tofu, tempeh, edamame, and all the ways we sneak soy into foods (like lecithin).

no way could I do this. I thrive off of beans.
champagnexdream 31st-Jan-2013 09:07 pm (UTC)
Yeah I could see this being a little difficult for vegetarians tbh. I can't do Keto because there is no way I can give up fruit.
dumpweeds 31st-Jan-2013 09:41 pm (UTC)
this is like 95% of my diet
kahluaandcream 31st-Jan-2013 09:34 pm (UTC)
I just cancelled my WW. I used to love it but with all the dietary restrictions I have it was driving me crazy.

I used to love plugging in my mother's recipes into the builder to find out just how bad for me everything was. Spoiler alert: it was all terrible for me.
victory_goddess 31st-Jan-2013 09:36 pm (UTC)
I've never done that specific one, but I do the primal diet which is similar. The biggest thing is, you just have to go cold turkey on the things they want you to cut out (and when I say cold turkey, I mean it literally, you will feel like you're going thru withdrawals.) But once you get over the initial pangs of the diet, it gets so much easier. I literally go my entire day on a bacon and veggie omelet and don't feel hungry afterwards.
d00ditsemily 31st-Jan-2013 09:41 pm (UTC)
I started back on WW today. I have a lot of weight that I'd like to lose tho.
cudava 1st-Feb-2013 06:07 am (UTC)
I've done the Whole 30 a few times (some more successful than others). There was a new year challenge, so several of the more popular paleo bloggers posted tips and recipes to help people going through it for the first time (hollywouldifshecould.net, nomnompaleo.com; theclothesmakethegirl.com).
akasha6915 1st-Feb-2013 11:54 am (UTC)
I've been thinking of doing something like that, but I have such a sweet tooth and I fucking love cheese. I've gone through my diet and cut out bread, and most refined carbs like that, but giving up my coffee with cream and sugar just sounds like to much.
ariesangel404 31st-Jan-2013 08:53 pm (UTC)
Not here for unnecessary kettle bell hate.
she_can_rock 31st-Jan-2013 09:19 pm (UTC)
RIGHT
sonja_76 31st-Jan-2013 09:32 pm (UTC)
My kettle bell collection and I agree whole-heartedly.

"Without a truly keen mind/body connection and ability to control swinging weights, you can easily injure yourself" No shit Sherlock, but that goes for every work out. Or maybe concentrating because you are working with swinging weights actually prevents injuries.
lone_concertina 31st-Jan-2013 09:55 pm (UTC)
She acts like we're being twirly birds and just flinging a 15kg kettlebell around. idk what the fuck she's doing with it but the whole reason it works for me is that I'm 2000% focused on controlling the movement.
angedesoir 31st-Jan-2013 08:54 pm (UTC)
The fuck did I just watch? An emaciated skeleton with 20 lbs of silicone etc wave some girly weights around? How is that supposed to help anything at all...
likegunfire 31st-Jan-2013 08:54 pm (UTC)
tracy anderson is AMAZING if you want to tone. probably the best for that type of thing.

she's perfect if you ignore her weight loss tips & that pathetic dance cardio she does
francesbcobain 31st-Jan-2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
i need to start working out. i'm so fat and ugly. brb killing myself.
xeroxicide__ 31st-Jan-2013 09:04 pm (UTC)
If you're just totally lost about working out start by doing a brisk 2 mile walk. I don't imagine it taking you longer than 45 minutes and it's pretty effective if you haven't been active in a while.

I'm in a slump and I don't feel like going outside and I've been jump roping in my house and it kicks my ass. I wish I could get a gym membership!
francesbcobain 31st-Jan-2013 09:20 pm (UTC)
i wish i could walk, but welp it's too cold. i suppose i could go to the gym i mean i live right next to one, but i think you need to be a member. i'm not entirely sure.
distant_lines 31st-Jan-2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
Try some Zumba. I've seen people of all sizes doing it. It's a great workout that doesn't feel like one.
ilovebeaarthur 1st-Feb-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
tbh, i hate working out, but i bought a pedometer to monitor how many miles i walk per day. just having it makes me aware of how much i move during the day (even though it's not major cardio)
imnotasquirrel 31st-Jan-2013 08:59 pm (UTC)
i need to get some free weights. i think i have some 5 lb weights in my apartment somewhere, but they're too light.
julietislimited 31st-Jan-2013 09:01 pm (UTC)
I cannot for the life of me get my diet right but I am doing more physically activity. I wish I were closer to the mountains so I could hike often for exercise.
chocolate_ari 31st-Jan-2013 09:01 pm (UTC)
yay fitness post
i signed up for a vinyasa yoga class! it's only once a week. and i miss my dance courses i used to take in HS/early college, but i just do it at home now lol
slacker_chic Coffee/ Soda substitutes?31st-Jan-2013 09:02 pm (UTC)
I've been logging my workouts since I started in mid-December. I finished my 33rd yesterday and can definitely tell the difference. I'm so excited to be getting back in shape. If I could cut out most of my coffee and soda I'd prob have a six pack by now. Can anyone recommend any high energy alternatives to coffee and soda??
champagnexdream Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?31st-Jan-2013 09:04 pm (UTC)
Green tea! I swear by it. Gives good energy and I think it boosts metabolism too.
tobesurrounded Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?31st-Jan-2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
seconding green tea. Kusmi Detox Green Tea is amaaaaaaazing.
goooooblue Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?31st-Jan-2013 09:11 pm (UTC)
thirding green tea, nectar of the gods
loganx2 Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?31st-Jan-2013 09:12 pm (UTC)
I HATE drinking water, but they have those water flavor drops and it has really helped me in my water drinking. there is no calories/fat/sugar in them. (or at least that is what they say, im sure that since i love them so much a study will show it will kill me or it will all be a lie)
slacker_chic Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?31st-Jan-2013 09:20 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the Green Tea suggestion guys! My coworker has some at his desk. I think I will swipe some this week to give it a try :)
champagnexdream Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?31st-Jan-2013 09:33 pm (UTC)
Yay! My fave is Starbucks' Tazo brand.
xeroxicide__ 31st-Jan-2013 09:22 pm (UTC)
If you're truly a caffeine consumer then I'd try Yerba Maté. It tastes pretty good with fresh lemon or lemonade or honey mixed in and it has so much more caffeine than regular tea. I'm super sensitive to caffeine consumption but green tea puts me to sleep.
sonja_76 Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?31st-Jan-2013 09:37 pm (UTC)
Another point for green tea. I actually even drink it during work outs. I do drink coffee beforehand going to the gym though (black).
tracygee Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?1st-Feb-2013 12:49 am (UTC)
Refrigerator tea...green or regular.

Throw a couple of teabags in a pitcher of cold water and stick it in the fridge overnight. Take out the bags in the morning. Yum.
invisible_cunt Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?1st-Feb-2013 02:14 am (UTC)
i'm so happy that i can't drink coffee (trigger food for my ibd) and i'm not a soda person at all.
i live on tea and natural energy.
akasha6915 Re: Coffee/ Soda substitutes?1st-Feb-2013 11:51 am (UTC)
I need to switch to something else, but coffee is my main vice right now, I'd punch a bitch without it. Water was easy to replace sound with. If addicted to soda, one of my exes had luck with switching to using EmergC in his water, because it filled the fizzy and sugary part of his soda addiction, and slowly weaned himself to water.
anchellada 31st-Jan-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
this one time i tried to do simple yoga, pulled my hamstring, and never did it again. im the most inflexible person ive ever known.
myblackass 31st-Jan-2013 09:07 pm (UTC)
I just bought a fancy Polar HRM and now I'm depressed because apparently, I haven't been burning half the calories during my workouts that I thought I was previously.

A woman on one of the exercise sites that I visit posted a pic of her non-strap HRM (the same model I had before Polar) after a Zumba class with over a 1K calories burned on it and I had to restrain myself to keep from shitting all over her accomplishment parade.
sonja_76 31st-Jan-2013 09:41 pm (UTC)
The Polar HRM are really good though, they are trust worthy.

I used to work for gyms and every trainer I know says it is pretty much impossible to burn 1K calories during a work out if you're not a professional athlete or start out with 35 min in an infrared cabin (burns about 300 calories and warms up the muscles so you can go full throttle from the start, definitely not recommended for non-pros though), so maybe her HRM is just being 'nice' to her.
myblackass 31st-Jan-2013 10:50 pm (UTC)
I'm 100% sure the watch was being nice to her. It was nice to me too when I used it. I asked if it took continuous HR (even though I know it doesn't) and she said it did because she checked her pulse after every song.
tobesurrounded 31st-Jan-2013 09:08 pm (UTC)
they're opening a really classy gym a one minute walk from my house. i have never gone to a gym (except group classes) in my life since i'm a horse girl/skier/outdoorsy kind of person but now i feel like i HAVE to start lol.
champagnexdream 31st-Jan-2013 09:33 pm (UTC)
Go for it bb!
loganx2 31st-Jan-2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
about 5 yrs ago I decided I was going to lose weight and I did I lost 95lbs. I went from 200 to 105 (im 5'3). Now everyone thinks I am too skinny. I cant really argue with it cause when I see pics of me I do look skinny (although when I look in a mirror I dont think i do). I am by no means starving myself. I 3 full meals a day and when im hungry I eat. I eat A LOT healthier than i used to. No fast food at all. I know it's all in my head. I had been fat all my life and I dont want to go back to that. plus losing weight is really the only thing positive I have ever done in my life so it's hard to try and gain weight back. I could work out less, but since Im unemployed it really just gives me something to do. I dont know what Im going to do.
deja_vu822 31st-Jan-2013 09:17 pm (UTC)
I think as long as you know you're eating well, you're getting enough nutrients, and you aren't harming your body, you shouldn't worry about it. it's not really about what you weigh, or what other people say, it's about how you feel about yourself. maybe it'd be better to focus on doing what makes you feel good about yourself as you are now rather than trying to gain or lose anything else (though that's a lot easier said than done).

omg good for you thats amazing!!
mysticlady3 31st-Jan-2013 09:31 pm (UTC)
Damn girl that is amazing. One of my fears is to lose major weight and then gain it back. I want to go from 208 to about 135 (I'm 5'5). It is manageable especially if I want it down by my birthday in October.
champagnexdream 31st-Jan-2013 09:39 pm (UTC)
Great job bb! I'd love to see a before/after pic for motivation if you're comfortable doing that tbh, but it's OK if not!
zxora 31st-Jan-2013 10:34 pm (UTC)
Good for you!

And I say ignore people's remarks about you looking too skinny. You know that you're not eating fast food and that you do eat when you're hungry. You're working out, eating better than you used to...you're working hard and your hard work is paying off! Keep doing the things you're doing...:-).
invisible_cunt 1st-Feb-2013 02:16 am (UTC)
good for you! you accomplished something incredible!
as long as you're comfortable with yourself and you know you're staying healthy by eating enough and exercising normally, there's no reason to care about what other people say or think
goooooblue 31st-Jan-2013 09:10 pm (UTC)
This frog faced bitch who basically says we should eat nothing and lift 1 lb weights a thousand times?

She can GTFO.

"I mix two scoops with grass-fed, hormone-free whole milk..."

Just stop right there. You are serving straight up rich bitch realness. A bottle of that shit probably costs more than my entire paycheck.

i love running so much. i just turn up the music in my iphone and run for 30 mins. doesn't require much thinking on my part, just one foot in front of the other. it's the best. :D

and i started doing some heavier weights now, over 5 lbs. best idea i ever had.
awkwardmumbles 31st-Jan-2013 09:19 pm (UTC)
i cant run for more than like 10 mins at a time without running out of breath. i feel like such a failure
cutesiness 31st-Jan-2013 09:28 pm (UTC)
thats okay, you should definitely take breaks if it feels too much. it took me while to build up to running for a long time. it's something you gotta train for. couch to 5k is great for training. :D
lone_concertina 31st-Jan-2013 10:00 pm (UTC)
The phrase a running coach I know always says is "If you can't breathe, you're running too fast." Try just slowing down the pace so your body feels like you're doing less of a sprint. The speed will come later.
nick_halden 31st-Jan-2013 09:54 pm (UTC)
i love running too. but only outside. i can't handle treadmills. soooo boring.

that would be okay if i lived somewhere where it was warm all year round :(
hello_samm 1st-Feb-2013 12:24 am (UTC)
Running has changed my life. I went from being a smoker who couldn't even run half a mile to a nonsmoker who can now run an entire 5 mile race. Couch to 5k is a lifesaver.
