Which Queer Ships Could Come True?

5. Emma and Regina, "Once Upon a Time"
While Emma and Regina could unite to create a pretty awesome couple nickname (SwanQueen) at least one of them would have to go through some intense character changes for this ship to make any sense. There just isn't a relationship book that covers how to deal with the fact that your girlfriend wiped your parents' memories, leaving you to grow up an orphan in a world that wasn't your own.come in for 1-4!!Collapse )

literally tumblr's wet dream, click the sauce for 6-12

If Dean/Cas were canon, I would be very happy. It is subtext throughout the show, imo. I didn't ship them initially but I feel like as I've watched the show, their relationship is continually alluded to being something more than friends. It would just be nice not to dance around the subject, as so many shows do with gay relationships.

It would also make sense with the character development. Everything Cas does is for Dean. And likewise, Dean shows the most personal growth and development with Cas. Not with Sam even, but with his acceptance and forgiveness of Cas. He doesn't give himself or open himself as much to his own brother (which is one of the main themes of the show...the brother relationship).

Over analyzing lol. I am just psyched, I just watched episode 1 of season 8 after having marathoned the whole show. Finally almost caught up! Avoiding spoilers is hard work

Everything about your comment is spot on and is my thought process too lol

Dean and Cas wouldn't be a huge leap to me because to me Cas is the only stable outside relation he has outside of his family (I'm including Bobby in this family mix). This season has so much character growth in Dean's department due to Cas that it warms my heart lol
angelgurl21 30th-Jan-2013 06:10 am (UTC)
I can't wait to watch more of season 8 then, I feel like we've needed some good character development.

Exactly right though, about Cas being Dean's only stable relationship. Even Bobby knows that for Dean, losing Cas is such a major event. They bring it up continually. In the same way, Cas is lost without Dean. He even mentions that he wishes he had Dean to tell him to stop with the soul thing from purgatory. That he refers to Dean as a moral compass...and Cas is the angel lol. It shows a trust and reverence, that Cas certainly did not have for whatever thousands of years previously, when he silently watched the Earth. I think that says a lot about his relationship with Dean.

I think of of the most frustrating things about shipping slash (besides the woman hate and race issues) is knowing that some of these ships would probably happen if it was a hetro couple. Like seriously the way they throw men at Emma if Regina was an evil queen they would have been making out angrily by now.

Mulan and Aurora would be in the bag.
theafterimages 30th-Jan-2013 05:36 am (UTC)
And how there are so many times where it wouldn't be a huge leap for the characters in question to be bisexual (I'm not on board Team Sterek yet, but hello, STILES), or even just capable of making an exception for that one other character.
m_pendulum 30th-Jan-2013 05:39 am (UTC)
I agree. Heterosexuality is still considered the default and it goes unchallenged and bisexuality is considered a myth
wauwy 30th-Jan-2013 05:46 am (UTC)
Well, to be fair, they wouldn't have written them the way they have if they had been men.
angelgurl21 30th-Jan-2013 05:49 am (UTC)
I agree. I think a lot of shows kind of throw these little allusions out there, but they can't commit to making something real. It's 2013, come on. Some shows have characters who never even share anything, and they hook up if they are hetero.

I also agree about Mulan and Aurora. I don't ship them myself, I just don't think I care enough about their characters...but the show has hinted at something with them. It wouldn't out of nowhere. Of course it won't be canon though.
daggertrepe 30th-Jan-2013 01:31 pm (UTC)
This mirrors my post upthread. Swan Queen WOULD BE CANON right now if Emma was a man.

Brooke/Peyton on One Tree Hill should've happened, fuck Lucas.

silentxmovies 30th-Jan-2013 05:49 am (UTC)

duckyzu 30th-Jan-2013 10:35 am (UTC)
OMG, yes! They were perfect, I couldn't take OTH seriously after Peyton left, leaving Brooke.

I wanted a Peyton/Brooke/Rachel triangle too.

I always wonder why people get bent out of shape about gay/slash shipping. If it's the pilot of a show and the main character is a woman who has tension/chemistry/OOMPH with another female character, I'm going to want to ship it. I don't know if she's dated women before, I don't know if she even notices what I notice between them, but I want to ship it. How is that not okay, but shipping her with the first guy she winks at is fine? Or even if she has in canon been romantically linked with a dude, why am I suddenly not allowed to ship her with women without it being fetishizing? In real life, you can't presume that a person's current relationships are emblematic of all their relationships and interests, so why is it a problem in fiction? I don't want to have to wait for a very special character to be written to represent me. If they show up, bully for all of us, but why am I not allowed to think that a character I already like could have sexuality just as fluid and complex as any real person's? It's ridiculous and I hear it all the time.

tl;dr Bisexual/pansexual erasure is not a good look. Ship and let ship, etc.

Thank you thank you thank you. So many fucking people get erased from the conversation when people start complaining about how fandom is just crazy women (lol what a progressive criticism) projecting onto obbbbviously heterosexual characters because they're delusional and scared of sex.
egalitarianmuse 30th-Jan-2013 06:35 am (UTC)
Don't even get me started on those critiques, the sexism and misogyny is strong in that stuff. Heaven forbid you look at two (or more) characters and think, 'shit they'd make a good couple' without it being a reflection on your worth as a person. And if you happen to be a woman and a femslash or slash shipper at the same time, yikes! What's even better is how insulted some people get as though by implying anything outside heteronormativity we've injured their precious straight characters, because straight characters are an endangered species and need to be be protected, am I right? The implication of queerness is not an insult and it's annoying that it gets treated like one.

And this is me off my soapbox, thank you for listening.
faithgrowsold 30th-Jan-2013 08:18 am (UTC)
Wow, A+. Thank you.
devourlove 30th-Jan-2013 07:06 pm (UTC)
stop having all that sense! don't you know sexuality is black and white?!

and i liked that you inadvertently added that "slash" doesn't only refer to male characters. While I do think that a portion, probably the most well-known and loudest portion, of slash shippers are less-than-commendable reasons (i.e. the extremists in 1D fandom's Larry where they just don't want the boys to be with any females), a good deal of us simply believe that any type of character can have chemistry. I support ships gay and straight but apparently expecting both in a show (especially one in which a character isn't EXPLICITLY stated to be GAY, end all be all) is ludicrous because it could only ever be pandering?

As a girl who's learning to get used to the fluidity of her sexuality, I can't say I'm not disappointed :/
wauwy 30th-Jan-2013 05:45 am (UTC)
ugh this is the biggest load of crap ever. I can't with people who insist their ship is gonna be canon (or, in verrrrry special cases like Kirk/Spock and Sherlock/Watson, that their ship is ALREADY canon).

SHOULD it be? That's another question. But WILL it be? Fucking no. Creators in Hollywood are not working on the same wavelength as anyone on lj or tumblr. When they make a character interested in the opposite sex even once, that person is then straight in their minds for the rest of time. Very, very few exceptions to this (Willow is one).

Also, I hate when these idiots do petitions and stuff claiming it's for ~representation. No, it's so you can better shlick to your OTP. If you really cared about representation, you wouldn't care WHO shacked up with whom as long as someone wasn't straight.
mynamehere07 30th-Jan-2013 08:10 am (UTC)

Some of the writers know that there are popular ship pairings and use that as an excuse to queerbait.

You know if the fans want to ship whoever, idc, but when the showrunners and writers get involved with the long gazes and lengthy hugs then pull out the no homo, that bothers me.
yurasama_love 30th-Jan-2013 05:49 am (UTC)
EW, Shawn and Lassiter?! HDU, it's Shawn/Gus.
isuspectnargels 30th-Jan-2013 05:58 am (UTC)
no @ sterek, just no. there are tons of other characters that get along way better than those two and none involve physical harm.
viakyusu 30th-Jan-2013 05:59 am (UTC)
Destiel is on this list. I'm happy :)

NOW, this maybe the CRAZY ASS DESTIEL SHIPPER in me but I swear Dean and Cas have so much chemistry. I thought it was me just wearing my Destiel glasses but my friend (who doesn't even know what Destiel or fandom craziness is) said, "Wow are they together? They argue like they're married." CAN I TELL YOU HOW HAPPY I WAS LMAO Also, that one writer on the show needs to stop feeding me false hope on twitter that Destiel is real lol
isuspectnargels 30th-Jan-2013 06:05 am (UTC)
lol that's how my friend reacted when I asked her if Destiel was canon after watching it with her.

granted, I got her into it but she's become obsessed with it since then.
mynamehere07 30th-Jan-2013 08:36 am (UTC)
They have great chemistry together, but I don't ship them romantically. I really think I'm the only one who's pro-Cas and not a Destiel shipper.

I just wish they would give Cas a stable plotline, instead of changing his character every episode. However, I haven't been paying attention to season 8, so maybe they gave him some substance this year.
kal_ella 30th-Jan-2013 06:05 pm (UTC)
i just love dean/cas. i would't be pushing for them to be canon if i didn't think they had a shot, and i do think they have a shot. they just might pull a surprise kiss in the very final episode
af_fx_tion 30th-Jan-2013 06:06 am (UTC)
faberry? lolno. I'm just waiting for quinntana tbh
kristinkat 30th-Jan-2013 06:32 am (UTC)
so i don't watch spn and only halfway through this thread did i realize that castiel wasn't the other brother
egalitarianmuse 30th-Jan-2013 06:36 am (UTC)
I honestly thought that was a gif of both Winchester brothers at first and I wondered why the paragraph didn't tackle the incest angle. I don't watch the show either, but I know the fandom well.
manubibi 30th-Jan-2013 08:05 am (UTC)
the Doctor and Jack tbh.
faithgrowsold 30th-Jan-2013 08:11 am (UTC)
This is hilarious because I think the wincest fans pissed that destiel became canon would be even more terrifying than the destiel fans wanting it to be canon.
shiiblee 30th-Jan-2013 08:28 am (UTC)
Am I the only one who ships Parks and Rec's Leslie/Ann? Srsly could not give a fuck about Ben/Leslie. *hides*
jaimelannister 30th-Jan-2013 08:00 pm (UTC)
I don't ship them romantically, though I can see the basis of it. I DO enjoy their relationship way more than Ben/Leslie though.

ETA: Ben sometimes makes me really uncomfortable because I feel like he talks down to her. (I've never said this to anyone before omg RUNNING AWAY)

why is this article writer doing this? to troll shippers? somebody on buzznet saying 'i like these ships' =/= a ship will happen
mynamehere07 30th-Jan-2013 08:54 am (UTC)
That was my thought too. But then again, it is buzzfeed, which gets most of it's content from tumblr, so.
