SAG Awards 2013: SAG Honors Best In Film & Television

'Argo' Beats 'Lincoln' AGAIN; Oscars Next?

Each year, the SAG Awards honor the best actors on film and television, and the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony was no different.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence were among the movie stars nominated at the 19th annual SAG Awards. Once again, however, it was Ben Affleck who stole the show.

Affleck's "Argo" took home the Outstanding Ensemble in a Motion Picture, upsetting "Lincoln" and "Silver Linings Playbook" to win the award. Following the film's victory at the Producers Guild of America Awards on Saturday night, "Argo" is in prime position to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards on Feb. 24, this despite Affleck being snubbed in the Best Director category.

Lawrence solidified her status as Best Actress front-runner by grabbing the Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in "Silver Linings Playbook"; Day-Lewis, also favored at the Oscars, won Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role for "Lincoln."

Tommy Lee Jones won the first award of the night. The actor, who wasn't at the ceremony, captured Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role for "Lincoln." Anne Hathaway won the Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role trophy for "Les Miserables." Accepting her award, Hathaway joked that she was happy to have dental insurance.

On the television side, Alec Baldwin won Outstanding Male Actor in a Lead Role for "30 Rock"; Tina Fey won the Outstanding Female Actor in a Lead Role for the same series. "Amy, I've known you since you were pregnant with Lena Dunham," Fey joked during her acceptance to friend and fellow nominee Amy Poehler.

Despite those wins, "30 Rock" lost to "Modern Family" for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series. "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson thanked the casts of "30 Rock" and "The Office" for inspiration and general awesomeness, as both shows are going off the air after this season.

Julianne Moore won Outstanding Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for playing Sarah Palin in "Game Change." Kevin Costner was awarded with the Outstanding Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for "Hatfields and McCoys." Costner wasn't at the SAG Awards ceremony.

After a flurry of early awards, Baldwin came back out on stage to announce Dick Van Dyke's Screen Actors Guild lifetime achievement award.

Bryan Cranston kicked off the second half of the SAG Awards by winning Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series for "Breaking Bad." He thanked his family, his cast and AMC.

Claire Danes won the Outstanding Female Actor in a Drama Series for "Homeland."

"Downton Abbey" was an upset victor in the Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series, defeating "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," "Homeland" and "Boardwalk Empire" for the honor.

The 2013 SAG Awards results could help clear up the very murky Oscar race. From previous HuffPost Entertainment coverage of the SAG Awards, via The Associated Press:

Honors from the actors union, next weekend's Directors Guild of America Awards and Saturday night's Producers Guild of America Awards – whose top honor went to "Argo" – typically help to establish clear favorites for the Oscars.

But Oscar night on Feb. 24 looks more uncertain this time after some top directing prospects, including Ben Affleck for "Argo" and Kathryn Bigelow for "Zero Dark Thirty," missed out on nominations. Both films were nominated for best picture, but a movie rarely wins the top Oscar if its director is not also in the running.

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" would seem the Oscar favorite with 12 nominations. Yet "Argo" and Affleck were surprise best-drama and director winners at the Golden Globes, and then there's Saturday's Producers Guild win for "Argo," leaving the Oscar race looking like anybody's guess.

The Screen Actors Guild honors at least should help to establish solid front-runners for the stars. All four of the guild's individual acting winners often go on to receive the same prizes at the Academy Awards.

Last year, "The Help" won Outstanding Ensemble in a Motion Picture, while Viola Davis, Jean Dujardin, Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer won the respective acting awards; all but Davis won on Oscar night (she lost to Meryl Streep for Best Actress).

Check out a full list of SAG Awards winners below, as the awards are announced:

Is Anne Hathaway honestly deserving of all the "Best Supporting Actress" awards?
fauxkaren 28th-Jan-2013 07:00 am (UTC)
Yes, imo.

I was in floods of tears during her performance of "I Dreamed a Dream".
agentnever 28th-Jan-2013 07:02 am (UTC)
I thought that performance was hammy as fuck. But then again I don't cry easily and I generally don't like Les Mis.

I wanna know from an objective point of view if she deserves it compared to all the other performances she's up against.
la_petite_singe 28th-Jan-2013 02:58 pm (UTC)
Yup, samesies. I know a lot of people think it was over-the-top, but I'm not a huge Les Miz fan and I don't know the story extremely well, and she had me bawling. To me that is a pretty clear sign of a very effective performance. Besides, it is hard as fuck to cry and sing at the same time!
katiefitch 28th-Jan-2013 07:01 am (UTC)
absolutely
she stole the show and was only in the movie for 15 minutes
robertsbox_xo 28th-Jan-2013 07:02 am (UTC)
yes
holyfrijoles_2 28th-Jan-2013 07:04 am (UTC)
I didn't particularly like her performance but idrc about the other actresses + I felt Hooper's directing took away the emotional impact of the scene. She seems nice so I hope she wins lol.
abcdlovelife 28th-Jan-2013 07:09 am (UTC)
she cried so much, give the poor girl all the awards
moddchicc 28th-Jan-2013 07:11 am (UTC)
Yes, imo. The only other BSA performance I would be okay with winning is Amy Adams for The Master.
likegunfire 28th-Jan-2013 07:20 am (UTC)
yeah if they want to award her for overacting
derrobitch 28th-Jan-2013 07:22 am (UTC)
yes. she was incredible in les mis.
anna_drenxavier 28th-Jan-2013 07:33 am (UTC)
I can't even have an objective opinion about it. I watched the movie aware of how thirsty she was for an Oscar, and how everyone involved with the film and many media outlets were pimping her like American Idol pimps their planted contestants. I was already annoyed. Nothing could live up to that hype. There's no question that she put everything she had into that performance, but I could not see it as anything but a hysterical plea for an Oscar.
colorstoobright 28th-Jan-2013 07:38 am (UTC)
personally, no. i thought she did well singing IDAD, but not enough to garner a nom. everything about her performance felt too technical.
saltireflower 28th-Jan-2013 07:43 am (UTC)
I don't think so. It felt like she was acting instead of just being imo and Hugh did a better job than she did anyway.

Totally! Thats how you win awards duh! Lose a shit ton of weight, cut off all your hair & just keep crying during the 15 minutes of screen time you have!

LOL tbh I loved Anne Hathaway until she became super thirsty for the awards.
ellaellaeheheh 28th-Jan-2013 11:23 am (UTC)
overacting at its finnest
starchain 28th-Jan-2013 11:29 am (UTC)
She did campaign harder then everybody else
agnes_perdita 28th-Jan-2013 01:05 pm (UTC)
Honestly the fact that she managed to develop her character's moment into something even approaching genuine is a miracle considering Hooper was so insistent on shooting up her nostrils for five minutes straight. Like, I get why people think she overacted, but I think a lot of fault comes down on the director's and editors' choices and lack of subtlety rather than on her.
onceupon_awish 28th-Jan-2013 02:44 pm (UTC)
I love Anne, but I wasn't feeling her in Les Mis. Her performance of I dreamed a dream was great and really visceral, but overrated tbh.

(or maybe bc everyone was all up in this I was expecting too much, which would be reasonable since I liked Russel Crowe bc everyone was talking so much shit about him that I was expecting him to have done a lot worse).

fred2265 28th-Jan-2013 04:44 pm (UTC)

nicholasdee 28th-Jan-2013 04:44 pm (UTC)
no

she was the best thing about that shitty movie, but her role wasn't significant enough to warrant a nomination
ljubavirakija 28th-Jan-2013 05:12 pm (UTC)
I wanna know from an objective point of view if she deserves it compared to all the other performances she's up against.

You'll never receive an objective POV because ONTD hates Anne
absolute_fury 28th-Jan-2013 08:01 pm (UTC)
I'd never seen "Les Miz" in any form before watching the movie and I rewatched that tight closeup three times because it was so fucking devastating. So yeah, I think so.
lordfoldemort 29th-Jan-2013 01:08 am (UTC)
no. all these people saying yes are simply saps because of the storyline. anne was overacting everything. it wasn't fantine, it was anne hatheway wanting a damn oscar. i don't think she was bad, i just..award-winning??

okay i'd like to see amy win just as much as the next person but mike schur has got to calm the fuck down. he's made this same point over and over again on twitter after EVERY loss and it's looking classless and when it's RIGHT afterward as it always is, disrespectful to the person who won. not to mention amy is always so gracious about it and has such an 'idgaf' attitude that i don't think she'd even appreciate this. and y'know what, that's the nature of awards... only one person can win and there's a lot of deserving people who are always left out. EDIT: And many great actresses who are never acknowledged with a nomination.

because its the most inoffensive comedy. Its the one that can garner the most attention from a wide range of people. I love Parks and Rec and Community but I can understand why it doesnt get everyones attention. Its SUCKS and is unfortunate, but... Modern Family has that ~family appeal
curious_maya 28th-Jan-2013 02:13 pm (UTC)
Hope this is the last year they win shit. The current season is painful to watch, not "The Office" painful, but it's such a chore. People need to move the eff on....
greatestheroine 28th-Jan-2013 02:19 pm (UTC)
It's funny but yeah, I don't get why it keeps getting the awards. Like, huh, NO.
la_petite_singe 28th-Jan-2013 03:01 pm (UTC)
Because it's such a 'safe' pick--it's diverse, but not ~too diverse; it's on ABC (aka Disney, aka the ruler of us all); it gets great ratings; the cast all submit themselves as supporting, etc. I like it too, but it's overrated as balls.
cricketgrl 28th-Jan-2013 05:11 pm (UTC)
I don't know why because only their first season was actually really good. Season 2 onward has been a mess.

The Oscars don't really seem to care for political films this year, so I think it's pretty safe to say Jen has a higher chance at winning than Jess. And I love both actresses, but I honestly think Jen had the more impressive performance.

ichdontthinksoo 28th-Jan-2013 07:36 am (UTC)
I know Jessica has other nominations ahead of her but it breaks my heart that Jennifer will most likely win Jessica's Oscar based on a performance with she's pretty much playing herself with ~issues~

Jessica was flawless in ZDT, her portrayal is so realistic and not many actresses would have been able to pull that off. People praise overacting way too much these days.
letsallchant 28th-Jan-2013 08:58 am (UTC)
I honestly believe that the best actress Oscar is J.Law's. It's a shame, it's such a mediocre movie and way too early in her career. She's like the Taylor Swift of actors atm.

The SAG awards have a larger voting pool, and I think alot of people probably voted for a show that they actually watch. Not saying the SAGs aren't political, but they probably aren't as politically intense or dramatic as the Oscars. Since everyone who is part of the SAG gets to vote, I'm not surprised DA won. It's been pretty popular, especially among actors, and Homeland is just starting to gain popularity.

don't act like downton's last two seasons were anything but awful
swissbeauty23 28th-Jan-2013 08:01 am (UTC)
i'm sad to hear this. i just finished S1 of Homeland :/
letsallchant 28th-Jan-2013 08:59 am (UTC)
I feel like more people actually watch DA as opposed to Homeland. Homeland is more of a critics darling IMO.

That and they haven't seen all of Downton S3 yet. :P There's no real backlash against it over here yet.

Jennifer's speech was very cute although every time she mentions what a "rascal" Harvey is it just makes me think he was creepy towards her in some manner. Anyway, if she wins the BAFTA then she's definitely winning the Oscar.

MTE!! I can see him having made some creepy move on her, so her sorta insulting compliments are her way of trying to get him to back off, without making him mad.

It's weird to me she thanked him again, honestly. Maybe it's a 'thank you for giving me a real chance even though I didn't sleep with you'? I sure hope it's the case.

He's a creepy pervert, so he probably did try it. Hopefully he wasn't successful.

If that movie was produced by anyone else it wouldn't have even been in the running. Harvey and Co. showed last year with The Artist that they can buy that award. I feel like this year they are buying her Oscar.

Noooooo. :( I'm sorry to be so intense on Jessica but come on! Not fair, HFPA. Not fair.
la_petite_singe 28th-Jan-2013 03:04 pm (UTC)
MTE. I already hate him and his award-buying ways; I assume there's other levels of creeperdom in there.

I agree...if she seals that BAFTA, the Oscar is hers.

BAFTA has turned into such a great indicator for the acting awards lately.

I sensed Viola was in trouble for Oscar when Meryl won that BAFTA and it was clear Marion had surged at the end for her Oscar win when she won her BAFTA a week or two before.

mte

i've never seen homeland but downton abbey is terrible lol
nene718 28th-Jan-2013 07:26 am (UTC)
homeland is pretty awful too now

if breaking bad was nominated (i'm guessing it was) then it without question should've won
saturdaysinbed 28th-Jan-2013 03:07 pm (UTC)
homeland is pretty terrible but tbh after season 1 i feel like it just got very 24-ish
the_pinkdress 28th-Jan-2013 07:32 am (UTC)
SAGs are acting... it's not the best drama, it's the best ensemble cast IN a drama. despite what you might think of DA, the cast is very good and has just as much right to be there than the other shows. (mad men is one of my fave dramas but IMO there are too many gaps and weak links in the ensemble).
