George Lucas: J.J. Abrams is the "Ideal" Director for Star Wars 7

George Lucas is officially passing the lightsaber.

After J.J. Abrams signed on to direct the upcoming Star Wars 7 recently, the Star Wars creator couldn't contain his excitement about the famed filmmaker taking on the project. 

"I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller," Lucas said in Lucasfilm's statement confirming Abrams as the director. "He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."



And he isn't the only one excited. 

Abrams, who has been busy directing the upcoming Star Trek: Into Darkness, is equally yoked about the opportunity, saying "to be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor."

"I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid," Abrams went on. 

Lucasfilm co-chair Kathy Kennedy also raved about the Lost creator, saying it is "exciting" to have Abrams on board for the highly anticipated film.

"J.J. is the perfect director to helm this," Kennedy said. "Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture." 

Star Wars 7 is set to hit theaters in 2015.

I guess this is good news for people who like lens flare.

And I say this as a fan of JJ's work with Star Trek, LOST, Alias, etc. I feel like I should be excited about this since I love Star Trek, but I just feel uncertain.

Anything JJ related always makes me nervous but he seems to have a better film track record than tv (I've been burned too many times by his tv show later seasons and/or endings)

The thing most people don't necessarily realize with his shows is that he helps develop them, but then leaves and does something else. So if you don't like the end/later seasons of Lost, Fringe, Alias, etc, it's really not Abrams fault at all. He had nothing to do with them.

Star Trek had a ton of lens flare though, I think it's a super valid point. I just re-watched Star Trek, and I already knew it had quite a bit of lens flare, but I was surprised that is was more prominent than I had remembered. There are like 100 lens flares before there's the title card, he went overboard with it.

Seriously. Star Wars fans can be extremely whiny (the must take after Luke!). After years bitching about how Lucas ruined Star Wars, they're now bitching that he's giving to someone else. You can't win!

I'm excited for the exact reason you mentioned - it can't be worse than the prequels. There is an actual writer writing the new movie and an actual director directing it. It cannot be worse than George's writing and directing, it just can't.
