90s kids rejoice: Web browser that no one uses makes a really cool commercial

Internet Explorer ad tugs at heartstrings of Gen-Y users

Whether you love or hate Internet Explorer, you've got to admit that some of its ads are pretty good.

Microsoft's latest IE ad, dubbed “Child of the 90s,” tries to appeal to people who remember the web browser at its worst.

The video shows snapshots of passing 1990s fads, such as Slap Wraps and Pogs. Meanwhile, a narrator describes how things were different back then. (My favorite line: “Lunch was a puzzle, not a picture,” spoken while stacks of Lunchables arrange themselves for an Instagram-style photo.) Take a look.

I used mine so much I can remember places where the silver paint was wearing off. I used to record my own radio shows and soap operas, it was the greatest.

I had to get a replacement, I wore the microphone out from pushing it up and down too much, it made me feel so ~badass like yeah it's time to get shit done or yeah I just got shit done. :P

I would do radio shows sometimes but mostly I wasn't that creative w/ it, I would just record everything like I was a documentarian for my own life. I found some of my tapes a few months back and it was unsettling how unfamiliar my voice and everything else was. I didn't remember any of it, it was like listening to a stranger's life but it was me. Well I did recognize my grandma in the bg bitching at me lol.

Speaking of nostalgia, I've been watching a lot of Full House recently.

I used @home before switching to Netscape. I remember staying inside all summer of '98 and watching Sailor Moon and hanging out on the Purple Moon website (the people who made the Rocket's New School games). The commercial for @home would play at every commercial break and I would KILL to see it again.

PURPLE MOON WAS THE BEST I remember when I spent 3 whole hours online and felt like I wasted the day.

One time someone tried to claim she was Lindsay Lohan to me on there, I will never forget it. Or when my mom had to call to get my account unlocked because I said something "bad" on there.
heart_of_butter 25th-Jan-2013 04:09 am (UTC)
Of jesus, Summer of '98: Purple Moon, Hot Pockets, and Sailor Moon.

I got my mom to spend an extra $2 on the site and it would allow me to list my favorite color on my profile. It was so badass and everybody was so fucking pressed and jealous. lol

I LOVED PURPLE MOON AND ROCKET! I think I had all of their games.

_______awshucks 25th-Jan-2013 04:20 am (UTC)
good commercial but I've been using IE at work and it still sucks.
biggerfun 25th-Jan-2013 04:29 am (UTC)
They can throw around all the 90s nostalgia that they want, I'm still not going to use IE.
crownless__ 25th-Jan-2013 04:34 am (UTC)
nice try IE, you didnt care about the user in the 90s, why should we care about you?
