Django Slave Toys Also Banned From Ebay

Don't count on finding one of those discontinued "Django Unchained" slave toys on eBay any time soon, the action figures have now been banned from the auction website.

The Weinstein Company (which produced the film) discontinued the promotional figurines in response to a massive backlash from several African-American advocacy groups.

After the toy company halted production, the toys began to pop up on eBay as "rare" collectibles ... and bids skyrocketed.

But last night, all the listings for the "Django" toys were yanked from the website -- and eBay explained itself to sellers with an email, saying, "Since the manufacturer of this product has discontinued the item’s sale due to its potentially offensive nature, we are not allowing it to be sold on eBay.”

eBay also cautioned the sellers not to re-list the items.

A rep for the auction website confirmed the story, telling us, "These [toys] were removed as they were in violation of our Offensive Materials policy."

But it has nothing to do with them being slaves or masters, they're just characters I happen to like ffs, why does everything have to be turned into some political crap? They're just characters. I wonder if all people getting offended ever had an action figure in their lives, because figures aren't golden idols and it doesn't necessarily mean you wanna be like those characters.
And the movie's historically inaccurate anyway, so it's not like they're celebrating real people from facts involving slavery.

theyre characters of what? what the fuck is this whole movie about? slavery. These characters wouldnt exist if it wasnt for slavery so to try and gloss of the essential aspect is silly. Stop trying to justify wanting slave doll. You want to own a figurine of a slave character for what reason? rewatch the movie buy the dvd if you love these slave characters so much.

Because essentially it's just a fictional story, and it's not even remotely accurate from the historical point of view. It doesn't portray real facts and real characters, and slavery is not the main theme really, but romance is. The main character doesn't necessarily act because he wants slavery to end (I mean that's not his goal, it's not like in IB where the Basterds' goal was in fact ending the war and nazism), all he wants is to get his wife back. And slavery is a context that could've really been anything else (any dystopian ambientation, for example). Like, why didn't people get offended over the Inglorious Basterds figures? After all, there are still people suffering because of nazism, and neo-nazism is an actual thing, so owning a figure of a nazi, from your point of view, should be problematic too, isn't it? But no, people like Landa because he's a well written character, not because he's a nazi. It's the same thing from my pov. And of course I will buy the movie, but I wish I had a shot at buying Django's figure cause he's a fucking awesome character, that's it.

lol I side eye any person who likes Landa.

Why? He's been written and portrayed beautifully. Of course he's a villain, but it's not like villains don't have appeal. Ask all the Loki fans! I loved Landa because of how smart and somewhat funny he was, not because of the nazism.
Anyway, I kinda get how the Django figures are problematic, now.
aviv 24th-Jan-2013 09:34 pm (UTC)
Because he's a fucking NAZI who goes around KILLING JEWS. You can admire the way he's written, but to say that you LIKE him? smh

manubibi 24th-Jan-2013 09:39 pm (UTC)
I like the character.
Loki goes around carving people's eyeballs out and invading New York but there's still a whole bunch of people adoring him (and the wackos even take his side) because they look at other things, not at the moral side of the character.
The same thing applies to all villains ever, there will always be people liking them despite what they do, because they're fictional.

Stop comparing a nazi with Loki.

nazis=real
loki=doesn't exist
manubibi 24th-Jan-2013 09:51 pm (UTC)
But this particular nazi never existed, that's the whole point.
aviv 24th-Jan-2013 09:54 pm (UTC)
But the things that he did, they were real.
I mean, really know, how can you LIKE a nazi character? A person who goes around killing jews and enjoys it?

manubibi 24th-Jan-2013 09:56 pm (UTC)
I don't enjoy the killings, of course. It's the lines he says and how he says them and the way it's written. I just find him an appealing villain.
