Why Canadian television wins with cop-drama "Flashpoint"

After five seasons, 75 episodes, and what reviewers describe as a riveting finale, "Flashpoint" has come to an end. As a result, the police drama's Canadian and American followings (it aired on both CTV and on CBS) must say goodbye, making "Degrassi" the only other scripted Canadian series turning heads south of the border.

So, what made "Flashpoint" so special? Produced for CTV in 2007, CBS signed on as production partner in 2008 during the writer's strike. From there, the show premiered to American and Canadian audiences, and filled the void left by TV shows on hiatus. Unfortunately, "Flashpoint" was dropped by CBS in 2011, but the police drama was then picked back up by ION Television, where it stayed until its conclusion. A cause for celebration, certainly, especially considering "Flashpoint's" Canadian roots.

Despite a distinct lack of buzz (arguably, it's no "Breaking Bad" or "Boardwalk Empire"), "Flashpoint" managed to maintain a fan base large enough to justify a prime time slot, with an early 18-episode order for its fifth and final season. However, unlike "Degrassi," "Flashpoint" didn't deal with controversial social issues, nor did it embrace the type of gut-wrenching subplots you might see on "C.S.I." or "Law and Order."

But perhaps that's what made it stand out. It's easy to look at a show like "Flashpoint" -- a subtly praised, Canadian series that was dropped from a major American network -- and dismiss it as just another venture in national broadcasting. However, the fact that Canada produced a cop show that chose to end (as opposed to being cancelled) and didn't outright channel or copy American shows is a victory. Canada is often pegged as "America junior," but instead of making another version of "C.S.I.," CTV chose to make "Flashpoint," a series revolving around a tight-knit group of police officers that combined action with real, human stories.

"Flashpoint" also differed from typical crime shows in another way. While "C.S.I." and "Law and Order" tend to depict -- at times -- brutal, graphic violence, "Flashpoint" did not. Yes, there was action, and violence moved the narrative forward, but the show didn't dwell on trauma or sensationalism. It was about the characters as people, less about the violence the were faced with. In that way, one could say it was a very Canadian series.

Maybe that's the key to Canadian success. The BBC prides itself on "British" shows like "Sherlock," "Dr. Who," and even "The Hour," and America follows its own path with television dramas. However, Canada has struggled to develop and define its unique television landscape, and our successes are sadly few and far between.

However, with the success of "Flashpoint" -- its action, its adventure, and, yes, its ability to stay on air -- maybe Canadian networks will finally realize that Canadian content is bankable, provided you stop trying to be anybody else.

Source is a month old, but the finale just aired in the US last night.

So, for those 5 ONTDers who watch Flashpoint - what'd you think of the finale??

I watched this show like twice for kween Amy Jo :')

it was good too , if they put it on Netflix I will continue
lestat 23rd-Jan-2013 07:26 pm (UTC)
amy jo is the main reason why i want to watch
anolinde 23rd-Jan-2013 07:28 pm (UTC)
Do it! I started watching for her, but the entire cast is amazing (with the exception of the occasional questionable acting from Enrico Colantoni, aka Daddy Mars if you watched Veronica Mars) and the show itself is way better than your average police procedural.
anolinde 23rd-Jan-2013 07:27 pm (UTC)
It is on Netflix! =)

(At least, the first four seasons were last time I checked, which would have been about six months ago.)
divadutchess 23rd-Jan-2013 07:26 pm (UTC)
the finale was amazing. I am still sad its over. Thanks for posting x
anolinde 23rd-Jan-2013 07:29 pm (UTC)
tbh I'm surprised the mods let this one through, haha. I thought they would reject it under "no one here cares." =P

I'm still so sad that Donna died. :(
divadutchess 23rd-Jan-2013 10:02 pm (UTC)
Hahahaha I know, when I saw the number of comments.. I am like i gotta contribute. Right? That part sucked.
redleigh86 23rd-Jan-2013 07:29 pm (UTC)
There's two Canadian shows on in the US I'm loving right now and hope get bigger followings but because they're on Syfy it's doubtful: Lost Girl and Continuum. Continuum is especially good, for real. That show deserves to be on a major cable network.
ms_mmelissa 23rd-Jan-2013 07:30 pm (UTC)
I hate Lost Girl. They added all these weird little Americanisms to it too, so it would sell better in the US.
robertsbox_xo 23rd-Jan-2013 07:32 pm (UTC)
SyFy edited the shit out of it, if you watch the original broadcasts it's much better.
redleigh86 23rd-Jan-2013 08:20 pm (UTC)
Really? Like what?
prophecypro 23rd-Jan-2013 07:51 pm (UTC)
Im surprised ONTD doesnt follow Lost Girl
Continum is dope
_folieadeux 23rd-Jan-2013 07:58 pm (UTC)
I loved Continuum, great series. I'm so glad it's getting another season.
williammiller 23rd-Jan-2013 08:33 pm (UTC)
I love those two shows as well, but apparently people here say that they're both edited heavily.
grifter 23rd-Jan-2013 09:22 pm (UTC)
love lost girl and only just found continuum so i'm only past the pilot.
robertsbox_xo 23rd-Jan-2013 07:30 pm (UTC)
canadian tv has gotten so much better in the past few years. flashpoint, rookie blue, lost girl etc.

like remember train 48 jesus christ canadian tv used to be awful
ms_mmelissa 23rd-Jan-2013 07:33 pm (UTC)
Awww, I've always loved Canadian TV. Slings & Arrows, Anne of Green Gables, Road to Avonlea, This is Wonderland, Degrassi Jr. High (the original series), Who's Afraid of the Dark, Being Erica etc are all good.
ahkna 23rd-Jan-2013 07:54 pm (UTC)
Slings & Arrows is just the best. It's SUCH a love letter to Stratford.
williammiller 23rd-Jan-2013 08:39 pm (UTC)
Yes to everything you mentioned (except This Is Wonderland and Being Erica since I haven't watched those.)
saintvlas22 24th-Jan-2013 07:48 am (UTC)
Road to Avonlea and Wind at my Back was my shit. I loved the Bailey family drama way more than a 10 old should have.
beemo 23rd-Jan-2013 07:44 pm (UTC)

Canada has made entertaining programming for a while tho. The original Digrassi series are good, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Goosebumps, Ready or Not, Breaker High, La Femme Nikita, Trailer Park Boys (w/e it was funny). I also loved Street Cents growing up.

Plus Bomb Girls is really good.
judeaslinksta 23rd-Jan-2013 09:30 pm (UTC)
omg Train 48, that was the Go train one right? That shit was ridiculous.

Excuse you, I believe you are forgetting about the pure genius that was Traders.

I came across my brothers watching this once and they sucked me into it. I'm so sad it's ending, I need to marathon this last season.
rockthecrown 23rd-Jan-2013 07:32 pm (UTC)
I'm a big fan of flashpoint, waiting for Season 5 to come on to Netlix so I can watch the last season.
megedeborch 23rd-Jan-2013 07:33 pm (UTC)
OMG a Flashpoint post on ONTD. That perfect show, has been weeks, but still not over the series finale.
anolinde 23rd-Jan-2013 08:03 pm (UTC)
I wanted to make a post weeks ago when the finale was airing in Canada, cause I figured there'd be articles written about it then, but I'm American so I hadn't seen the finale yet and I didn't want spoilers. :(

So the show just ended for me yesterday, but I'm feeling pretty despondent, so I hear ya. =/
megedeborch 23rd-Jan-2013 08:07 pm (UTC)
Not canadian either, just using other sources. ;)

As a spoilerphobe I totally get that though. Finale wouldn't have been as intense, because I was scared about one of the main characters dying the whole time.
crystalzelda 23rd-Jan-2013 07:36 pm (UTC)
I've only seen a few eps for my fave Veronica's dad/Elias aka Enrico Colantoni

He's my 5ever guy
anolinde 23rd-Jan-2013 08:04 pm (UTC)
Haha, his character on Flashpoint is pretty awesome. =D
wonderwomanhero 23rd-Jan-2013 07:36 pm (UTC)
I watched one episode of this show. These bitches were bullying this girl and they cut her hair and she wandered through a mall for like 15 minutes and went on the roof and was gonna commit suicide but low and behold it's up to the pink ranger to save her from not killing herself and I'm pretty sure the other bitches got away with what they did to her and I was like nhft so I never watched it again after that.
anolinde 23rd-Jan-2013 07:42 pm (UTC)
Haha, what? They detained the three girls who gave her the forced haircut and identified them as belonging to a gang, so the implication was that they were going to face punishment for it. (I mean, they didn't show them getting loaded into squad cars or anything, but they were with police officers at the end of the episode.)

Funnily enough, I think that was the first episode of Flashpoint I saw, too - it was playing at a bar in a restaurant while I was eating dinner, and I got curious so I Googled it and found out that my queen Amy Jo Johnson was in it. ♥

They filmed this down the road from my house once (I live near the Warplane Museum), and I wanted to get Hugh Dillon to sign my copy of L4D2 but I was too shy to go see about getting it :(
anolinde Re: ot, sorta23rd-Jan-2013 08:06 pm (UTC)
Aw. :( Who knows, maybe you'll get another chance!
tipping4_2 23rd-Jan-2013 07:39 pm (UTC)
negl this show had me tearing up a couple times. I'll miss Team One :(
ilovedogs 23rd-Jan-2013 07:40 pm (UTC)
I thought this was GONE! I hope it is on Hulu or Netflix, damn.
anolinde 23rd-Jan-2013 07:43 pm (UTC)
It's on Netflix! At least, the first four seasons were six months ago, when I last had access to a Netflix account. They should still be there! :)
shinebrighter 23rd-Jan-2013 07:48 pm (UTC)
the first 4 seasons are on netflix instant :)
crystalfairie 23rd-Jan-2013 07:44 pm (UTC)
Ummm there's this show called Rookie Blue? So no, not just Degrassi turning heads.
ms_mmelissa 23rd-Jan-2013 07:51 pm (UTC)
Rookie Blue is Canadian? LOL now it makes sense that Global was playing ads for it non-stop a couple of years ago. Maybe I should check it out.
divadutchess 23rd-Jan-2013 10:03 pm (UTC)
It is haha.
ahkna 23rd-Jan-2013 07:53 pm (UTC)
Totes forgot Rookie Blue on my list of shows airing in the US
shunda84 23rd-Jan-2013 08:38 pm (UTC)
I was just gonna post this. The show takes place in Canada.
yurasama_love 23rd-Jan-2013 07:44 pm (UTC)
It's a good show. I don't watch it regularly, but when I catch it, I love it.
ronnie_luvs_u 23rd-Jan-2013 07:44 pm (UTC)
ngl, I liked watching this just to hear familiar names lol. "He's taking the DVP!!!" etc. I need more shows set in Toronto.
beemo 23rd-Jan-2013 07:46 pm (UTC)
oh this show is actually set in toronto? :D i thought it would be like cold case or nikita.

we're totally not in toronto, guys. ignore the... everything.
ronnie_luvs_u 23rd-Jan-2013 07:49 pm (UTC)
they don't say it outright :| but I definitely heard familiar street names and saw familiar sights, so it was better than usual.
fauxparadiso 23rd-Jan-2013 07:50 pm (UTC)
lol I always liked Cold Case cause it was one of the few shows set in Philly. Didn't know it was filmed in Toronto though.
ahkna 23rd-Jan-2013 07:51 pm (UTC)
They don't actually SAY Toronto. But they show shots of the CN Tower and use landmarks and street names all the time.
ronnie_luvs_u 23rd-Jan-2013 07:53 pm (UTC)
like, once they was a hostage situation at the Old Mill (lol) and they didn't actually say the name, but if you've been there or know about it, it's super obvious that it's the Old Mill.
_folieadeux 23rd-Jan-2013 08:00 pm (UTC)
Once they totally showed one of the guys bringing people Timmy's, lol. They add in the street names around Toronto, it's pretty obvious, I love it.
ms_mmelissa 23rd-Jan-2013 07:49 pm (UTC)
Being Erica and This is Wonderland were both set in Toronto but they're both unfortunately over now.

I am super pissed though that CBC only ever released the first season of This is Wonderland on DVD. It was such a good show!
kissoffools 23rd-Jan-2013 07:51 pm (UTC)
LOL that's partly why I watch Rookie Blue. I love seeing the areas they shoot in because so many are familiar to me. (They shot literally outside my front door for Season 2, it was a v exciting day. I got to meet my celeb crush of like ten years, lol!)
ahkna 23rd-Jan-2013 07:52 pm (UTC)
I always get annoyed that Canadian shows start by being Canadian when they air in Canada and as they become more popular in the US, they change to American. Sanctuary was the worst at that. They never gave the name but used Canadian money and such but by the end they were all "Oh, our liaisons at the FBI, that totally has jurisdiction here!"

Lost Girl is doing the same now.
