ONTD Roundup

I went and saw a lecture by Temple Grandin last night and it was really interesting.

My complaint is that people were still on their fucking phone texting people around me. You PAID FOR THE FUCKING THING AND WERE THERE VOLUNTARILY. She was even SPEAKING about how people are addicted to their devices.

i know it's weird to say, but i've tried to pull out of technology as much as i can.

it's so depressing to go ANYWHERE and see everyone buried in their own little iphone worlds

It is depressing. It's like people don't know what to do with their downtime now. My friend and I went to a play and sat on the balcony. We looked down and almost EVERYONE was on their phone or a fucking ipad. Ugh. I hate people and technology sometimes.

I work in a restaurant and it always saddens me to see families or friends out, sitting together, but individually distracted by their phones and tablets. They barely say a word to each other. One time this family's toddler walked out of the restaurant and they didn't even notice because they were playing on their iPads.

I've made a point to put my phone on silent or airplane mode so I won't be tempted to check but my friend's always texting away and barely making conversation.

I've seen her speak before, she's terrific.

That sucks, though. People were a lot more respectful when I saw her. I don't even look at my phone when I'm visiting with friends unless I get a phone call or am getting repeated texts.
cuteej4 23rd-Jan-2013 05:57 pm (UTC)
Yea and she only spoke for an hour so it's not like she was rambling on (except she went on a tangent in the end about sperm...)

It's not only rude but it's distracting to the people around you so I was having trouble enjoying the lecture because these rude fucks were playing around.

One time at work we had this special team building day and the first thing the coordinator did was make all the managers take out their blackberries and place them in the centre of the table and promise not to use them. And of course within two seconds my idiot manager had taken hers back and was texting on it. She was such an embarrassment.

Ugh. This is one of the reasons I will not upgrade to a smart phone. I can go without my phone when I'm with my friends because I'm with my friends. I've forgotten my phone before or had it turned off and completely forgotten about it. I just don't understand how people have become SO attached that they don't know how to function
theblackwidow 23rd-Jan-2013 06:10 pm (UTC)
She is on faculty at my Alma Mater. I've seen her a couple of times.

I've had that happen. I can't stand when people text around me at events like that, it is so rude.
cuteej4 23rd-Jan-2013 06:14 pm (UTC)
Ooh. You went to the University of Colorado?

The person in my row was just a little too far away but if she had been next to me, I would have seriously told her to turn off her phone and put it away.
_inlikeflynn 23rd-Jan-2013 06:30 pm (UTC)
ew how annoying. that's like when people go to the movies and text throughout the whole movie. if you want to text get the fuck out.
theblackwidow 23rd-Jan-2013 06:48 pm (UTC)
The last time I went to a movie with my sister she did this. It pissed me off.
sadisticsidhe 23rd-Jan-2013 07:09 pm (UTC)
God I hate that. These two teens girls were on their phone texting/facebooking throughout all of Wreck it, Ralph until the point that I just leaned forward and said "Could we not?" They sneered at me but turned it off.

Seriously, why pay to be on your phone?
williammiller 23rd-Jan-2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
I don't get the point of paying for something if you're going to be on the phone the whole time. It must be nice to be that rich and not care what your money goes towards.
