Anderson Cooper Defends Beyoncé’s Lip-Synched Inauguration Performance: ‘So What?!’

For “The Ridiculist” segment of his show tonight, Anderson Cooper turned to the post-inauguration scandal that rocked the country today. Beyoncé lip-synched the national anthem!

“I respond with a big star-spangled so what?” Cooper said. “As far as I’m concerned, it is Beyoncé’s world and we are just living in it.”

Clarifying that it was her pre-recorded voice, she just wasn’t actually singing live, Cooper continued, “I’m releasing a statement right now saying I just don’t care. We got to look at Beyoncé’s beautiful face and hear Beyoncé’s beautiful voice singing the national anthem. There is only one thing we should say today and that is thank you, Beyoncé. Francis Scott Key himself would send her a fruit basket.”

After playing clips of some of the more infamous lip-synching scandals in music history from Milli Vanilli and Ashlee Simpson, Cooper had one final message for anyone questioning Beyoncé’s decision. “Talk to me after you’ve gotten on the stage in front of the president of the United States and hundreds of thousands to sing the national anthem in 40-degree weather.”

someone linked this in the other post and you can hear her singing over a backing track a.k.a not lipsyncing

The Today Show defended her too.

They also claimed Whitney Houston used back tracking when she sang at the superbowl?

She did and one of her former managers confirmed it. IIRC, she had a backing track with vocals just in case + livesinging along to that.

Manager = musical director, oop.

Right? There's nothing wrong with having backup in case something unexpected happens, especially in a scenario like this where you really need to be on-point. Not that she would've flopped without it, but it's good to have backup.

I'm not trying to get in a fight I swear

but personally I was never that impressed with Whitney's version and the fact that it was pre-recorded just makes it a joke to me

A lot of singers use back tracking when they sing outdoors. It makes the sound clearer since wind and other noise can be an issue.

Isn't there also a weird delay or something? Idk if a backing track helps that though.

Yep, she did.

Actually, using a backing track at the superbowl (and other big events) happens all the time. The echoing through stadiums cause issues when people sing live.

I don't really get the big deal, other than the fact that people were insisting that she sang live when she obviously didn't.

yes, that is true.
