Kelly Clarkson Did NOT Lip Synch at Inauguration: Rep

Kelly Clarkson did not lip-synch during her Inaugural Ceremony performance of “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” on Monday.

In the wake of the revelation that Beyonce decided at the last minute to sing the national anthem to a pre-recorded track, questions were raised about whether Clarkson’s own patriotic performance was lip-synched.

But a rep for the onetime “American Idol” winner says Clarkson sang live.

A spokesperson for the United States Marine Band also said on Tuesday that the band played their instruments live, contrary to some media reports.

Recording the ceremony’s music ahead of time is standard procedure, given the wide range of circumstances that could pose problems for performances during the program.

But she prides herself with being such a great artist and performer, that this logic would make it seem even worse.

She probably realized that since the song is notoriously challenging to sing well live, that there was a chance she could go off key. Keep in mind that this was a huge venue with a million people in attendance and with billions of people watching live. It's a presidential inauguration - she knows that it is never going to be forgotten, ever, and the national anthem is a big deal for these kinds of events. And for all we know, she could be just getting over a cold or allergies and knew that he priority was giving a pleasant and memorable performance rather than risking the chance of a mediocre performance that might take away from the ceremony itself.

As a singer myself, I just can't fault her for this. Usually I have a problem with lip syncing but this is a very special circumstance and I'm not sure I wouldn't have done the exact same thing if put in her position. We already know Beyonce is a fantastic vocalist, so it's not as if this shows that she relies on lip syncing in her career. The fact that her lip syncing is so rare and that she places so much importance on performing live shows me that she must have had a good reason to do this.

Obviously she'd have a lot of excuses for doing it, but it just seems a bit tacky to me, especially given her reputation and how much she even buys into her own hype. I mean, yeah, we all know she can sing, but in the end, excuses are just...Well, excuses.

Like I said, for all you know she may have woken up ill or with a sore throat from the cold. The article says itself that her lip syncing was a last minute decision. It just seems nonsensical to vilify a woman who we already know is a damn good live singer just because she lip synced ONE song that still managed to be uplifting and inspirational to her audience.

I'm not vilifying her though, I just said it seems tacky. If she had a cold or some vocal problems, I'm sure she'll come out and say so at this point, but the other excuses are just really weak imo. She was asked to sing at this event because she's known to be a great singer, to basically say she decided to lip synch or let a backing track take the reigns for this kind of even because she feared she would screw up just seems like a big cop out to me. I just think it's silly that a singer would be afraid to sing.

I agree with you. People are so full of excuses. Singers are supposed to sing, though. That's what they do.
