James Purefoy says he won’t do Game Of Thrones

In a new interview with Empire Magazine James Purefoy says that he won’t be doing Game of Thrones, and that his Rome o-sta Kevin McKidd is in agreement.

Purefoy is currently promoting his new TV show The Following in which he plays a serial killer. When asked his feelings about the HBO series Rome, the actor had this to say:

"[Kevin] McKidd and I had lunch the other day, and I said to him, “Have you been asked to do Game Of Thrones?” And he said, “I’d never do it. Because they stole our fucking show.” He worked out that if Rome had run for the entire seven seasons that it should have run, we would only have finished it last year. And he feels that HBO did Game of Thrones instead of us, so they stole our show. I kind of agree with him. I won’t be doing Game Of Thrones, even if they ask me."

He was bitching about the "spot" on the schedule not the concept. Meaning that if they didn't put Game of Thrones on the air than Rome would have gotten more seasons.

i LOVED rome, but this argument makes no sense at all?
Rome was costing a shit load of money and not having the kind of incredibile success GOT is achieaving. I miss the show (and other gone too soon hbo shows like carnivale) but wtf?

also i'd very much like his fine ass to be on got, tbh. although im not sure how he looks now

Totally agree. I loved Rome but it was crazy expensive even with two countries joining in the cost and didn't have the viewers that it needed to justify that cost. GoT is super popular and has continued to gain viewers so to the studio the cost is justified and recouped. Rome ended because HBO didn't think it was worth it any longer.

Agree too about Carnivale, loved that show!

HBO prematurely cancelled it because it thought the viewership didn't make up for the cost but it did really well in dvd sales iirc

Considering that GOT started 4 years after Rome ended, I don't think that holds up. And even if HBO somehow made the decision to do GOT 4 years later instead of continuing Rome, it's not the makers of GOT's fault. So "they" didn't steal the show.

GoT has been in development for a longggg time. it didnt drop out of the sky into 2011. they started working on it in 2007. so his argument kind of makes sense that they would pull the plug on rome to focus on GoT.

I read people saying the decision to cancel Rome was announced in mid-2006 whereas Benioff only began pitching GoT to HBO in 2007, so... yeah, like you said that really doesn't hold up. GoT probably only started using money in 2009 when they shot the original pilot.

The show cost double that of GOT. They should have fired the person in charge because they didn't know how to run a show. They were filming in italy which was expensive and had no filming tax incentive like other places and they built expensive sets instead of using more CGI. It was a mess.
