Downton Abbey "Poses A Threat To The Left" Because It Portrays Nice Rich People, So Says Fox News

The popularity of Downton Abbey in America is a threat to progressives because it celebrates rich people, according to FOX & Friends:

“Rich people, powerful people, in America today, are reviled,” Varney said. “They’re dismissed as fat cats who don’t pay their fair share.” The general consensus is that “rich people are evil.”

Then comes along Downton Abbey… making rich people seem nice. The characters in the show are kind and generous. “They create jobs, for heaven’s sake. They’re classy, they’ve got style.”

“It poses a threat to the left, doesn’t it?” he asked. Because the left says we must hate rich people.

Crack is a hell of a drug.

Look what you've done, Julian Fellowes. You Tory asshole.
x_butterfly19_x 22nd-Jan-2013 12:57 am (UTC)
lmao

wouldn't it have the opposite effect, because it forces people to consider whether or not they want that particular kind of patrician Toryism?

Most of us wouldn't be a Lady Mary lbr.

I tried to explain to someone that wanting the rich to pay their share =/= demonizing them all and hating them for being successful but then I gave up because when someone is only capable of seeing things that black and white there's no hope for them. I hope they handle the rest of their lives with less rigidity.

Yeah, the problem is that the super-wealthy are not reinvesting all that money in the economy, while congressional republicans continue to rail for lower tax rates under the premise that they are the ~job creators~.
lachica2000 22nd-Jan-2013 03:03 am (UTC)
Exactly. It would be one thing if they actually created any jobs but the super wealthy and the corporations are sitting on their liquid assets and removing more and more money from the economy and that can only damage it.

my husband has a rich aunt, and she's pretty damn nice and generous she gives us money constantly.

i've met more upper-middle class people who are stingy tbh

Fox is a network of assholes.

I do like DA but I hate Fellowes obvious Tory arse-kissing. I love LOVE his earlier film Gosford Park and wish he'd carry on in that vein in DA, because it would have had a lot more bite to it.

I think Edith is evil. I miss Sybil.
johnjie 23rd-Jan-2013 12:10 am (UTC)
Well in that sense I don't know if I'd call any of the Crawleys 'nice', although Violet and Robert take the prize for 'most classist arseholes', with Carson and Mary as runners up
somefantastic 23rd-Jan-2013 02:36 am (UTC)
Julian Fellows really tries to push the "compassionate conservative" thing though. The paying for Mrs. Patmore's eye surgery, promising to take care of Mrs. Hughes when she retires, etc.
johnjie 23rd-Jan-2013 04:02 am (UTC)
Oh no, I'm aware that he's enamoured of the 'patrician Tory' ideal, but I still think te classism of some of the characters and unfairness of the class system show through despite his white-washing.
somefantastic 23rd-Jan-2013 02:34 am (UTC)
I mean, tbh, I agree with them (although I think I'm coming at it from the opposite end of the spectrum). There are certainly aspects of the show that I think are designed to make us think how great the rich are. But Julian Fellows is an aristocrat, so duh.
