Downton Abbey "Poses A Threat To The Left" Because It Portrays Nice Rich People, So Says Fox News

The popularity of Downton Abbey in America is a threat to progressives because it celebrates rich people, according to FOX & Friends:

“Rich people, powerful people, in America today, are reviled,” Varney said. “They’re dismissed as fat cats who don’t pay their fair share.” The general consensus is that “rich people are evil.”

Then comes along Downton Abbey… making rich people seem nice. The characters in the show are kind and generous. “They create jobs, for heaven’s sake. They’re classy, they’ve got style.”

“It poses a threat to the left, doesn’t it?” he asked. Because the left says we must hate rich people.

Fox News just keeps getting stupider. I'm only surprised because I didn't think it was possible.
saikaro_x 21st-Jan-2013 10:00 pm (UTC)
won't someone plz think of all the poor rich people in america??

my friend has joked that modern family is a ploy by the right to make the 99% look more relatable lol
realizes 21st-Jan-2013 10:17 pm (UTC)
Which is interesting & part of a larger conversation of how we only want to see "rich" people on TV, because if any of those characters had dual incomes they'd nearly be 1%ers. As it stands they are probably top 5%ers.
velvetunicorn 21st-Jan-2013 10:21 pm (UTC)
yeah, i wonder if it's because of what they show us or is it what we want to see. I mean, there are very few poor people on tv. I find a huge contrast between US & UK soap operas. In the US, they're always really wealthy, even if they're pretending they're not (I'm looking at you Bradys). They're always in ultra glamourous gowns and perfect makeup. Meanwhile, in the UK there's always wearing the same clothes over and over and many characters work in factories.

It's just something I wonder about.
saikaro_x 21st-Jan-2013 11:30 pm (UTC)
oops yeah, i totally meant to say to make the 1% look more relatable, not the 99%!
existential 21st-Jan-2013 10:34 pm (UTC)
i must be super-poor cause i always considered the families on that show to be rich, or at least upper-middle-class lol
hormoaning 21st-Jan-2013 11:37 pm (UTC)
it's funny bc i didnt even notice you put the wrong percentage at first, i understood what u meant
nekonekox 22nd-Jan-2013 01:48 am (UTC)
Comments like this make me wonder: what do you want? Do you want to make the rich poorer like you? Or do you want to become richer like them? Either way, you are losing.

Where I live the president says he's the president of the poor. And he's no lying. 14 years later, people are poorer than ever. We only have super inflation that makes it look like people are more wealthy because they receive liquid money all of the time, but it goes as it comes.

So, the issue for me it's not how much money you have, but what you do with it, and just saying "oh the poor rich people" is over simplistic and quite inconsequential.
tlcspice 21st-Jan-2013 10:00 pm (UTC)
Isn't the show set in like the early 1900's? Rich people back then were probably nicer or less corrupt, but the entire thing is fictional so WTF is Fox News even talking about?
grammaire 21st-Jan-2013 10:03 pm (UTC)
Rich people back then were probably nicer

I doubt it.
tlcspice 21st-Jan-2013 10:10 pm (UTC)
yeah you are prob right.
suzycat 21st-Jan-2013 10:05 pm (UTC)
What Faux fails to realise, not being English, is that Downton is set at a time of massive social change, where the world of the British elite was unravelled and irrevocably altered by WWI, and it was all middle class and blah by the end of WWII. IF the series continues, they'll have no staff and have sold the country house by the end of it. I saw Upstairs, Downstairs. GHOD.
hera_bearrra 21st-Jan-2013 10:16 pm (UTC)
I don't think they were nicer...

I mean, this was before child labor laws and unions so...
ediesedgwick 21st-Jan-2013 10:21 pm (UTC)
i can't
devolute 21st-Jan-2013 10:37 pm (UTC)
They weren't necessarily nicer, but the class difference was more pronounced and less questioned. You were more or less born into it, and while the same is true today to some degree, you don't have the gentry vs. the working class where pretty much nobody ever switches unless a girl is "fallen" (basically has sex or is thought to have been compromised before marriage and gets kicked out of her family) or a family completely loses all of their wealth, which rarely happened, and in that case the family members still had options like going into trade or becoming a governess or something so they didn't have to enter servitude.

Downton Abbey is set right at the time where this was all falling apart, like web the series starts everyone is scandalized that Matthew is a lawyer or whatever because he's not a ~real rich person~. But after the war and shit things start to come undone and women are getting jobs and marrying poor people and all kinds of shit. Contextually it's just not a comparable situation, the point of wealth on the show is to show the class breakdown during that period.
beoweasel 22nd-Jan-2013 12:10 am (UTC)
Oh no, they were just as nasty and corrupt as they are now.

If you want a crash course on just how vicious and horrible the ultra-wealthy of late 19th to early 20th century, just look up Henry Clay Frick.
x_butterfly19_x 22nd-Jan-2013 01:01 am (UTC)
They definitely weren't nicer.

The people at Downton have nice lives, but there is no way in hell that it was aspirational - the whole class system was constructed around rank and knowing your place.

Unless you were born in the right circles it wasn't going to happen. Pre-WWI, anyway.
uss_galactica 22nd-Jan-2013 01:01 am (UTC)
Yeah, the first season starts in 1912 (right after the sinking of the Titanic), and has currently progressed to about the 1920s.
wauwy 22nd-Jan-2013 08:50 am (UTC)
LOL they were just as corrupt as ever. The guy who makes it is on the British right-wing.
rainbow_fish 21st-Jan-2013 10:00 pm (UTC)
They are so fucking stupid, I honestly cannot.
hope_remains 21st-Jan-2013 10:01 pm (UTC)
Invalid. Those people are British. They have British accents. Therefore they will in no way resemble the American rich. No comparisons will be drawn. The end.
suzycat 21st-Jan-2013 10:06 pm (UTC)
Also they inherited their wealth which is in direct contradiction with BOOTSTRAPPING, the American way!!! Right?
hope_remains 21st-Jan-2013 10:07 pm (UTC)
So very, very true.
marywebgirl 21st-Jan-2013 10:08 pm (UTC)
And the actual British person didn't even inherit it, he took a handout from an American!
hera_bearrra 21st-Jan-2013 10:18 pm (UTC)

Isn't the whole premise of the first season about finding a male heir to inherit their fortune or something like that?
powerbottom 21st-Jan-2013 10:01 pm (UTC)
They must be in on it tbh. They cannot be this fucking idiotic.

Republicans are so dumb. There was right-wing housewife on twitter today going on about how Obama was a "nice man" but not her president and never will be. Well, yeah, bitch he kind of is. She was American obvs.
buncha_cruncha 21st-Jan-2013 10:04 pm (UTC)
I can't stand those "not my president" people. HE'S THE PRESIDENT OF EVERYTHING, GET OVER IT.

It's like, dude, I lived through eight years of Bush. You can do it, I promise.
suzycat 21st-Jan-2013 10:07 pm (UTC)
President of everything indeed - the WHOLE WORLD has to bow to the US president, whether he's a nice man or a dimwit, and also to the US Congress and the US Senate. If WE can deal with it and we didn't even VOTE for these people, so can she.

A Fox News headline from a few days ago read " republicans accuse Obama of trying to lead the nation". I almost peed in my pants. Umm yeah, that is what we elected him to do.

licorrice 21st-Jan-2013 10:50 pm (UTC)
Can you not? thanks for generalizing all republicans as dumb it's our politician views if we think that Barack is not our president then he's not, in my heart Rommey is the resident and and hopefully the republican party in the office can over ride Barack's quests about how he leads america.

you should be ashamed of yourself tbh.
tundra1800 21st-Jan-2013 11:09 pm (UTC)
Republicans just have a really difficult time understanding that they don't get special rules because they're special snowflakes. If I had to admit to having Bush as a president for 8 years they can suck it up and deal with Obama
wristtattoos 22nd-Jan-2013 12:28 am (UTC)

There have been an unfortunate number of times when I've gotten a FOX headline mixed up with an Onion headline.

They were going after math and history last week. I just don't want to believe this can be a real thing on tv.
miss_lurker 22nd-Jan-2013 02:40 am (UTC)
I think Fox News is like Scientology. I think it occurred to Rupert Murdoch one day that he could convince a lot of people to buy a bunch of BS and make a lot of money (or get a lot of power).
