MGM planning Ben-Hur remake

After nearly folding due to bankruptcy just a few years ago, MGM Studios is back and better than ever, after the success of Skyfall and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The studio is gearing up to take on what may be their most ambitious project yet, a remake of the 1959 classic Ben-Hur.

The studio has acquired a spec screenplay by Keith R. Clarke (The Way Back), which is much more faithful to the 1880 novel by Lew Wallace. While director William Wyler's Ben-Hur focused on the feud between Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and Messalla (Stephen Boyd), this film will explore the characters' formative years, growing up as best friends before the Roman Empire conquered Jerusalem.

This script also features Jesus Christ, who encounters Ben-Hur and whose tale is told in parallel to the title character. Ben-Hur begins to believe that Christ is the Messiah, before the savior is killed by Pontius Pilate.

Sean Daniel and Joni Levin are attached to produce. No production schedule has been released.
Ben-Hur was released November 18th, 1959 and stars Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Haya Harareet, Stephen Boyd, Hugh Griffith, Martha Scott, Cathy O'Donnell, Sam Jaffe. The film is directed by William Wyler.

so ONTD, who do you think should reprise the iconic role of Judah Ben-Hur?

This was on fucking 3 times over the Christmas period, it's so damned long and boring. If I was MGM I wouldn't touch this with a bargepole.

Also nhf the chariot racing scene, I don't know how they're going to be able to replicate it in a more humane way. (Though lbr ANY way is more humane than the way it was done - disgusting)
therearewords 21st-Jan-2013 03:06 pm (UTC)
Everything CGI (I typed CSI first, lmao).
arcadiaego 21st-Jan-2013 09:57 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's an amazing looking scene but it's clearly fucking lethal. Then again an actor died in the 1920s version. Possibly they should stop filming this story...
hippie_chick 21st-Jan-2013 03:02 pm (UTC)
But... why?
therearewords 21st-Jan-2013 03:05 pm (UTC)
Give it to Fassbender. He will manage the look and nobody will mind seeing him whipped.
arcadiaego 21st-Jan-2013 09:57 pm (UTC)
Actually he might be really good.
thelovehater 21st-Jan-2013 03:09 pm (UTC)
Can't they just leave well enough alone...

What's next, a remade Gone with the Wind with Megan Fox and Channing Tatum.
nanewt011 21st-Jan-2013 03:19 pm (UTC)

Pass.
nanewt011 21st-Jan-2013 03:19 pm (UTC)
this would actually be a remake of a remake of a remake, Ben-Hur was originally a silent movie, filmed first in 1907 and again in 1925 starring Ramon Navarro
thelovehater 21st-Jan-2013 03:22 pm (UTC)
Exactly! There are already 3 versions of this movie and I think a tv mini-series as well not too long ago. No need for another retelling of the story.
iamglory 21st-Jan-2013 07:40 pm (UTC)
Came here to say that. Interesting fact...Roman Navarro was killed with a dildo.
nanewt011 21st-Jan-2013 07:53 pm (UTC)
I believe his killers got out early because the justice system was prejudiced against Navarro because he was gay, early hate crime
iamglory 21st-Jan-2013 09:29 pm (UTC)
Would not doubt it one bit.
fuk_q 21st-Jan-2013 03:28 pm (UTC)
yes, just what we need. another remake.
beatlesluv 21st-Jan-2013 03:33 pm (UTC)
They're going to remake the film that Bridget Jones lost her virginity too whilst her parents were downstairs watching this ~religious~ epic. LOL

Seriously though enough is enough. How about you give new screenwriters (::cough:: like me) with new material a chance, rather than recycle a bunch of old films which have been done to death.
lovebats 21st-Jan-2013 03:51 pm (UTC)
we're so differently culturally now opposed to '59 that i can't see this being successful as a blockbuster
hollis1975 21st-Jan-2013 03:52 pm (UTC)
can we NOT. the original is just fine and god knows how hollywood will fuck it up a second time around

* i just read it would be a remake of a remake of a remake of a remake. just leave it be now hollywood.

Only saw the top of the picture and thought this was going to be a Monty Python post. Disappoint.

My grandpa LOVES this movie and has been trying to convince me to watch it for the past 10 years. I do like epic/historical movies, but this seems a bit too much even for me. Plus I hate his catholic ass, no way I'm following his biased advice.
arcadiaego 21st-Jan-2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
To be fair it only gets really religious at the end, and it's really more more 'Jesus had some smart things to say'.
yurasama_love 21st-Jan-2013 07:12 pm (UTC)
No.
wikkidraven 21st-Jan-2013 07:13 pm (UTC)

Same here, sis.
prophecypro 21st-Jan-2013 07:33 pm (UTC)
This has been remade time and again I dont know why anyone would have a problem with it. Its entirely dependent on who writes, direct and the stars they bring to get people's interest. Nothing more Nothing less.
antlewry 21st-Jan-2013 08:49 pm (UTC)
I read this as "MGMT planning Ben-Hur album"...blame my new puppy for killing my sleep and making me delirious.
arcadiaego 21st-Jan-2013 09:55 pm (UTC)
Lol, I am probably going to be the only person under 60 with this view but THIS IS MY FAVOURITE MOVIE (Joint with Lawrence of Arabia. I just really like very long movies, apparently). I'm not even Christian, it's just GREAT. But yes, it was a remake of a remake and there has since been at least one TV version. (It was terrible.) So yeah, get on with it, it won't be as good as the 50s version, blah blah etc.
juicybrisket 21st-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
how about no
