Five reasons why Emmanuelle Riva can (and probably will) win Best Actress

1. She has the most challenging role.
As an elderly woman whose health dramatically declines after a sudden stroke, Emmanuelle Riva was charged with true high-difficulty acting rarely seen on the screen. She was required to display her music teacher character in a vibrant and talkative state, and then transform herself into a near vegetative condition. The physical challenges associated with a task like this can’t be downplayed. The actress had to virtually relinquish all of control of her body, and eliminate any "monitoring" which might suggest self-awareness to the audience. Was there ever a moment when you doubted what you were seeing? Many people found the film somewhat difficult to watch, but that’s largely due to how convincing the acting was. Riva has been this year’s critical darling, winning honors from the Los Angeles Film Critics, the National Society of Film Critics, the Boston Society of Film Critics and numerous other groups. While such awards don’t always translate to Oscar, bet that the Academy will surely recognize Riva’s monumental achievement.

who is winning actor?

I have no memory of that category.
katiefitch 21st-Jan-2013 02:52 am (UTC)
ddl is a lock
lloydsgurl 21st-Jan-2013 02:53 am (UTC)
oh yeahh.

that's how memorable it is tbh.

Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep are the exceptions, not the rule. Which explains why Marion Cotillard beat Julie Christie the year that Christie was the frontrunner. Though, I think Marion deserved it, she was amazing. I'm not saying that Riva can't win, but the Mirren and Streep exceptions do not apply to her. If she does win it will be because she actually defies the rules.

As for the Francophiles in the Academy only one French speaking actress has ever won the Oscar, and of course that was Marion.
colonel_green 21st-Jan-2013 03:02 am (UTC)
I don't think you can really count Mirren's win is evidence of her having her own exception. She had a couple of previous noms, but that hardly compares to Streep, and there was nothing to suggest she had any kind of major Academy constituency prior to her winning.
saltireflower 21st-Jan-2013 03:17 am (UTC)
I don't know if Mirren herself has her own exception, but at her age, her win wasn't the norm.

She can't compare to Meryl, but I feel like she was a more high profile than actresses like Julie Christie (who already had an Oscar anyway), or Emmanuelle Riva.
shmilez 21st-Jan-2013 03:12 am (UTC)
Wasn't Claudette Colbert a French speaking actress too?
silentxstrom 21st-Jan-2013 03:46 am (UTC)
Marion was so amazing in La Vie. I can't really describe how much I love that movie. I saw the other nominees after watching Marion's movie and was so thankful that she won. She was easily 100x better than her competition. I feel like Riva will surprise everyone and win the Oscar.

The rationales for dismissing Chastain and Lawrence is essentially "they'll vote for them later", which is unconvincing (in Chastain's case, I can believe that the restrictive nature of the role might be an impediment, but that would benefit Lawrence, who gets to do comedy and drama).

Yeah, this year has been way more interesting.
backupblood 21st-Jan-2013 03:13 am (UTC)
Besides Supporting Actress and quite possibly Lead Actor, there are no real locks ANYWHERE ELSE this year.
howlcosmiclove 21st-Jan-2013 03:16 am (UTC)
agreed

I think it's very cool that after seeing people on ONTD screaming "what about Riva/Quvenzhané," they BOTH got nominated. Far more interesting nominees this year.

I hope the pressed comments in this post are a good indication of the meltdown ONTD will have if JenLaw get the Oscar.
I honestly like everybody in the best actress category this year and will be happy for any of these ladies to win, but I hope Jen takes it for sheer entertainment's sake.

Ugh. I am still pissed about Felicity losing for Transamerica.
thesegoto11 21st-Jan-2013 04:08 am (UTC)
nothing will beat gwyneth winning over my queen imo
ametalheart 21st-Jan-2013 09:28 am (UTC)
THIS! Elizabeth is one of my favorite films. Cate is the Queen. I am still so bitter.
wheresandrae 21st-Jan-2013 09:41 am (UTC)
That was the worst year ever
cammiec 21st-Jan-2013 03:01 am (UTC)
Couldn’t a number of other actresses have played the part just as well?

Exactly. SLP was so fucking basic and JLaw was nothing special. If anyone, Robert De Niro was the best part, followed by Bradley Cooper.
colonel_green 21st-Jan-2013 03:04 am (UTC)
The "any number of actors" thing applies to most roles, if people are being honest. I'm sure Hathaway (the previous candidate for the part) would have done fine, or David O. Russell's recurring performer Amy Adams. That doesn't detract from Lawrence's performance on its own merits.
cammiec 21st-Jan-2013 03:17 am (UTC)
It was an okay performance, but it was just a basic character, anyone could do it, while I believe is not the case for the other actresses nominated, especially Riva and Chastain.
in_suburb 21st-Jan-2013 03:09 am (UTC)
SLP was so fucking basic

yeah, it's just a romantic comedy/drama? I don't get the hype.
SJP >>>>>>> SLP
wicky_wicky 21st-Jan-2013 04:05 am (UTC)
ia and i'm baffled by anyone who doesnt see that?
lovelyeli 21st-Jan-2013 07:07 am (UTC)
De Niro was srsly the best thing about SLP..then again im biased and love him like a grandpa and want him 2 win all the awards.
brucelynn 21st-Jan-2013 03:02 am (UTC)
I anybody but Jennifer Shithead wins
nekokonneko 21st-Jan-2013 03:03 am (UTC)
they didn't even mention q in #2, rude

i'll take that to mean my bb is a real contender for the win

she should but she won't.

lol @ the writer bragging about predicting the king's speech win tho. everyone knew that was gonna happen.
anna_bea2 21st-Jan-2013 04:38 am (UTC)
lol ikr. That year was the most predictable.
wheresandrae 21st-Jan-2013 09:42 am (UTC)
seriously

even though Social Network vs King's Speech was one of the biggest Oscar debates I can remember ever happening because critics jump onto the nuts of TSN and never let go
saikaro_x 21st-Jan-2013 03:09 am (UTC)
i don't want to see this movie because it is probably super depressing
xzackb 21st-Jan-2013 03:10 am (UTC)
i watched it and it stuck with me for like, 3 days afterwards. shit gets real.
saikaro_x 21st-Jan-2013 03:18 am (UTC)
yeah, i mean i can handle movies that don't have happy endings, but certain movies (like this one i'm sure) just give me anxiety about my life and losing loved ones lol. that shit is real regardless, i don't need a movie remding me about it. no ty.
in_suburb 21st-Jan-2013 03:15 am (UTC)
Yeah, I really can't finish it. I guess her performance is great, but the film is just too depressing.
howlcosmiclove 21st-Jan-2013 03:22 am (UTC)
it's worth the watch, but it's definitely sad :(
immaflirt 21st-Jan-2013 05:31 am (UTC)
this is me.. :(
wheresandrae 21st-Jan-2013 09:43 am (UTC)
its a haneke movie
its sad but not brutal like some of his others
lexy_ 21st-Jan-2013 03:09 am (UTC)
I just saw Silver Linings Playbook last night and besides hating it, I really thought Jennifer's performance was uneven. She had some good moments, but most of the time she was flat or it just looked like she was just playing herself (which is always annoying). And she has the MOST expressionless face, ugh. Fuck the Weinsteins for getting her a nom, a GG, and making her a frontrunner.
if_musicbe 21st-Jan-2013 04:16 am (UTC)
MTE.
xzackb 21st-Jan-2013 03:09 am (UTC)
it's her 86th birthday, on the day of the 85th oscars, and she holds the record for oldest candidate nominated for best actress.

that's all the evidence i need.

I have a gut feeling this category will see an epic vote-split, leading to a Naomi Watts win
saltireflower 21st-Jan-2013 03:20 am (UTC)
The vote split is a good point.
backupblood 21st-Jan-2013 03:27 am (UTC)
It's a category with 5 performances that have a lot of supporters and critical love. Any of them could win (okay, maybe not Wallis but it's still a little within the range of reason) and it would be an upset tbh
likegunfire 21st-Jan-2013 03:59 am (UTC)
I'm praying this happens <3
thesegoto11 21st-Jan-2013 04:11 am (UTC)
mte I keep telling people not to forget about naomi
wheresandrae 21st-Jan-2013 09:43 am (UTC)
I feel like she had a chance before the Riva storm but now idk
ellaellaeheheh 21st-Jan-2013 03:11 am (UTC)
I loved Jessica Chastain performance. I'm a sucker for understated performances. her face in the end killed me. she felt real to me. but I'm all for Riva winning. it would be a great story.
saikaro_x 21st-Jan-2013 03:20 am (UTC)
i loved that scene when she was alone in the plane
thesegoto11 21st-Jan-2013 04:12 am (UTC)
