'Les Miserables' standout 'I Dreamed a Dream': The history of this sob-inducing song

Perhaps you recently saw the film Les Miserables. Perhaps you got a little caught up in the story of Fantine, the fired factory worker whose desperation to take care of her daughter fuels much of the early plot. Perhaps you made it to the moment where Fantine — played by Anne Hathaway — sings her signature ode to lost love and dashed hopes, “I Dreamed a Dream.” Perhaps you, like much of the rest of the sentient universe, broke down into a blubbering pile of raw-throated eye-gush emotional goo. You are not alone. Hathaway’s version of the song — which recently earned her an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win — has gotten everyone talking about a tune that was already one of Les Miz‘s most popular standards. “What [director] Tom [Hooper] and Annie have done is created a really raw, pure version of the song,” says Working Title co-chairman Eric Fellner, one of the movie’s producers. “There have been many great versions of the song, but I don’t think anybody has performed it this way, because it’s never been acted on screen before. It’s just very, very emotional.”

As Fellner points out, there have been plenty of memorable takes on “I Dreamed a Dream” since composer Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyricist Alain Boublil wrote the song in Paris in 1979.

Read on for a few of our favorites, along with some memories from people involved!

Ruthie Henshall's performance of this song is probably my fav. Who's your favorite Fantine, ONTD?

i did love the emotion in anne's voice during the song but lbr Ruthie's version is like Guardian angels lifting her voice..it's perfection.
buncha_cruncha 20th-Jan-2013 11:26 pm (UTC)
IKR, when Ruthie goes to hit the notes, it's like magic. Such precision.
homicidalslayer 20th-Jan-2013 11:15 pm (UTC)
The song made me teary eyed the first time I heard it, but now it's been overplayed to the point that I just roll my eyes. It's the "You Belong with Me" of musical theatre songs.

I'm sure in a few years of fading into the woodwork, I'll like it again, but for now... no.
whossoulsister 20th-Jan-2013 11:16 pm (UTC)
on my own, though. that's the LITERAL you belong with me of musical theater.
homicidalslayer 21st-Jan-2013 12:01 am (UTC)
LMAO true enough, just not in the context of my analogy.
chimbleysweep 20th-Jan-2013 11:16 pm (UTC)
Anne's is my favorite by far. It was like being punched in the gut for five minutes.
cyrano_cyse 20th-Jan-2013 11:19 pm (UTC)
I'm just gonna leave this here...

kanonot 20th-Jan-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
i cant with ricky lo or any of the gossip anchors in the philippines. they are all just turd personified (sometimes Boy Abunda is tolerable, sometimes)
ohsofierce_x3 20th-Jan-2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
I am always here for Queen Lea, but Anne was amazing. She deserves the awards and praise she's gotten and will get.
podgie 20th-Jan-2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
I was driving and listening to the soundtrack and the epilogue came on and I ugly cried.

Also, I loved Russell Crowe in this.
ohsofierce_x3 20th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
As I love your icon, I wonder, can Tom Hardy sing?
podgie 20th-Jan-2013 11:33 pm (UTC)
I don't think he has performed in anything before, but I love his voice sfm. I would listen to him narrating paint dry.
weasleyswit 20th-Jan-2013 11:31 pm (UTC)
I thought Russell was pretty decent! I was expecting a sound like goats gargling rocks, but he was good!
lovelyeli 20th-Jan-2013 11:33 pm (UTC)
i hated russel crowe

honestly i only liked eddie, sam and Aaron out of everyone.
fauxkaren 20th-Jan-2013 11:42 pm (UTC)
I've had to stop listening to this musical in front of other people. Like sometimes I'd listen to it while on my iPod while on the bus or something and I'd get super choked up. lol @ me
defyingstars 21st-Jan-2013 04:19 am (UTC)
I don't think Russell Crowe was even half as bad as people were making him out to be. He was decent, just not the typical voice for Javert.
arcadiaego 21st-Jan-2013 08:55 pm (UTC)
LET ME LOVE YOU. I thought I was the only person who liked Russell Crowe in the film. :D
jaimelannister 22nd-Jan-2013 03:05 pm (UTC)
Last week I put on the Original London cast and baked and cried.
xcollsangelx 20th-Jan-2013 11:21 pm (UTC)
Anne slayed on this song. I get a lump in my throat every time I hear it.

genbu_no_miko24 20th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)

andres01234 21st-Jan-2013 01:59 am (UTC)
I love her version
hoot 21st-Jan-2013 02:26 am (UTC)
People make fun of her version now but I think it's beautiful.
nemo_de_la_meer 20th-Jan-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
Rose and Patti are my favorite Fantine's. Their praise is well deserved.
sadisticsidhe 20th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
I'm going to have to go with Queen Lea Salonga.

megalixer 20th-Jan-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
I saw Lea Salonga live and it's pretty hard to top that. The only other one I've seen live is Sierra Boggess, though I liked her a lot as well, actually.

I thought Anne did a great job, IDAD is one of the only numbers that Tom Hooper's insistence on extreme close-ups helped out.
senkig 20th-Jan-2013 11:36 pm (UTC)
definitely, IDAD and ALFOR were the only two moments I felt like it really worked

on my own was good but it wasn't shot completely in closeup (thank god)
lettya 20th-Jan-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
Lea Salonga has always been my favorite & her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream remains my favorite but Anne was amazing as well.

I never cried or was emotionally invested in Fantine but Anne made me cry. I don't care how much ONTD hates on her she was amazing. Her Oscar campaign is obnoxious but if she wins it'll be well deserved.

whossoulsister 20th-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
i don't really have a favorite fantine but i grew up with the debbie byrne version of i dreamed a dream, so that's the one that's most familiar to me. i loved anne's fantine, though.
hireaunicorn 20th-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
omg yasss at the timing of the post!!
I just got in from seeing it and I loved it! I must be heartless though because I didn't cry. I got so close to it at lots of points but idk, I find it hard to cry at films.
If anyone has a link to the soundtrack, please share!

I didn't cry the first time, but the second go-around my face started leaking.
howlcosmiclove 20th-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
Ruthie's is my favorite. Anne did a great job though.
