Daniel Radcliffe: Everyone Needs To Chill Out About My Gay Sex Scene
The 23-year-old tells MTV News there's nothing "shocking" about the sex in his Sundance drama, "Kill Your Darlings"
By Eric Ditzian

PARK CITY, Utah — Before, during and after the Sundance Film Festival premiere of "Kill Your Darlings" on Friday night (January 18), all anyone could talk about, so it seemed, was Daniel Radcliffe's sexual escapades.
Maybe it was because this erotically charged Beat Generation drama represents the 23-year-old's most high-profile film since he graduated from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Or, perhaps, it had something to do with the fact that in "Darlings," he plays the poet Allen Ginsberg and spends a fair amount of the film making out, having gay sex and masturbating.
But here's the thing: Radcliffe is totally cool with all of it — and he doesn't understand why so many others aren't.
"It's interesting that it's deemed shocking," he told MTV News. "For me, there's something very strange about that because we see straight sex scenes all the time. We've seen gay sex scenes before. I don't know why a gay sex scene should be any more shocking than a straight sex scene. Or both of them are equally un-shocking."
That Radcliffe has such an enlightened perspective on these matters is no surprise, considering the Brit has been an outspoken proponent of gay rights, working closely over the years with the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization focused on crisis support and suicide prevention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths.
As Radcliffe walked the jam-packed red carpet at the Eccles Theatre on Friday and answered a seemingly unending series of questions about his sex scenes, he wanted to remind everyone that he starred in a Broadway play in which he mutilates horses and stands naked on stage. What's the more provocative performance?
"What weirded me out the most last night was people were asking me all these questions about the gay sex scenes. I was like, 'You know I did 'Equus?' " Radcliffe laughed. "Some people are asking me questions like this is a more shocking subject, which is so strange."
Strange, and possibly more uncomfortable than shooting the sex scene itself. "We didn't really have time to feel awkward," he explained. "I think we shot the thing in about an hour, hour and a half or something like that. You just kind of had to get it done. I'm trying to avoid using phrasing that could slip into innuendo!"

every time gay sex comes up, it basically means miserable gay relations all the way
the film was great. amazing cast, script and director.
I like that in a man.
Congratulations on not being a judgmental asshole I guess.
the film is fantastic. I don't say that as a Danrad stan either. He is excellent in this film. Heartbreaking and soulful performance. Dane DeHaan is UNBELIEVABLE. The chemistry between Dan and Dane is electric. Michael C Hall is creepy yet sympathetic and the brilliant Ben Foster is brilliant as always even with little screen time. Foster is one of the most underrated actors of his generation.
They really could not have put together a better cast. I don't expect this film to be widely received because of the subject matter, but that's their loss. It's a beautiful film and one of the best ever about the Beat Generation. Superb script, directing, cinematography, score...everything. I don't think people were expecting what they got in this film. Standing ovation. If this isn't up for awards next season, there is something seriously wrong. If anything, original script and a nom for Dane DeHaan is a MUST.
I'm glad people are finally starting to see Dan as a talented actor and not Harry Potter anymore. HP will follow him for a while longer, but if her continues on this path, he will make a name for himself as Dan Radcliffe, not a fictional character. He is making excellent career decisions and I commend him for being fearless. He could have been egotistical asshat that made this all about him doing "gay sex" being a controversial "gay character/icon"...but he is all about the work, quality and being a part of the team/process to make good films. It's everything but him. Humble man.
As far as Dan himself. He has always been this way, hence why I have stanned for this beautiful man for so long. It's rare to see a celebrity (especially when considering that he is the ultimate child star and could have turned out soooo badly) that is THIS self aware, truly intelligent and overall amazing human being. This is not an act he puts on. Dan is like this. If you ever meet him, you'll see how genuine he is. What you see is what you get.
He is super laid back and will chat with anyone. Very kind and patient with fans. Lovely man.
Will forever stan for him.
Wow....longer than I intended, but I cannot gush enough about how good this film is and my wonderful prince that shines in it.
I haven't read much about Michael C Hall's performance in the reviews, but he is soo subtle and you do feel for him to some degree.
Just as you do for Allen when Allen realizes what Lucien is (I think David is so deluded when it comes to Lucien and their relationship). Dan delivers a heartbreaking performance. You watch him as this naive son and then develops such confidence in himself and awareness that you feel Lucien will never have.
As I said before, Dan and Dane's chemistry is magnetic. They share such intensity. You don't care that it's two men.
Everything about this film draws you in. Seriously, this film went by in a flash. You're on the edge of your seat. It's so well constructed from a brilliant script and with this cast.... it's almost perfect. There were one or two little things that bugged me and now that I think about it, if the audience knows nothing about the beat generation....there may be moments were things don't click...but I'm nitpicking really. It's a great film.
I really hope this gets picked up. It's still the best film I've seen so far this season. I think more films like this need widespread distribution. Not all of us care for brainless, blow shit up, tween, vapid comedy -movies. I would see this again and again.
I truly feel this should be up for awards next season. It's that good.
