How was your Friday night, ONTD?

Have you read the novel?

ia Joe Wright has magical when it comes to the aesthetics of a film, but I wasn't as thrilled about the plot/setup of the film itself tbh

No, I haven't, which might explain why I liked it so much. People who have read it seemed sort of dismayed by the adaptation overall.

I'm thinking about picking up the book because you could tell that there was a lot of super interesting stuff that was going on that the movie just didn't have time for. I left the theatre thinking it should be longer, but it was already over two hours long.

I'd definitely recommend it. That was actually one of the problems I found about the film, actually. It just cut out so much important stuff and focused so much on the ~romance.

I'm glad you enjoyed the film, though. I wish I could have watched it with more of an open mind.

Yeah, it's always hard watching a movie adaptation of a book you love because there's always so much good stuff that they have to leave out.

My favourite movie adaptations are all from books that I've hated or ones that wildly diverge from the original to the point where it's pretty much it's own work.
lucciolaa 20th-Jan-2013 02:50 am (UTC)
I definitely went in with an open mind, and since watching the HP films, I've learned to be a lot more flexible about film adaptations. But this one just really frustrated me, probably because the novel has so much in it and the film felt so watered down. I saw it at TIFF and I came out and I was so upset, I was really looking forward to it. It's definitely difficult to adapt a novel into a film and I try to be open minded but, fuck, AK disappointed me sfm, probably because I'm already such a huge fan of KK and JW.

I read the novel when I was like 15, so I don't remember a lot of it which is probably why I wasn't bothered by the changes? lol. Idk. It's a MASSIVE book and I think the movie did an admirable job of paring it down and focusing it.
