Jamie Foxx Calls Spike Lee’s ‘Django’ Comments ‘Irresponsible’

Lee recently weighed in on the Quentin Tarantino film about an American slave seeking revenge, saying in an interview, “it’s disrespectful to my ancestors, to see that film” and then tweeting, "American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them."

Speaking with the Guardian, Foxx was candid in his response to Lee’s comment. "The question for me is: where's Spike Lee coming from? He didn't like Whoopi Goldberg, he doesn't like Tyler Perry, he doesn't like anybody, I think he's sort of run his course.”

Foxx added, "I mean, I respect Spike, he's a fantastic director. But he gets a little shady when he's taking shots at his colleagues without looking at the work. To me, that's irresponsible.”

"Django Unchained" has become the best box office film domestically in Tarantino's career, and with five Oscar nominations.

I hope it wins Best Picture

But it'll probably be Lincoln because white men love that shit

took the words out of my mouth bb.

I could barely finish Lincoln, I know DDL got his method on and all but that film was practically tailor made for old white men.

lol ikr

it was so boring. Django is a 3 hour movie too but it doesn't drag like Lincoln does.

Lincoln took me four days to watch. I am all for slow movies but holy SHIT that movie was so. boring. The best part was seeing random actors appear that I didn't know were going to be in it.

LOL I had to restrain myself from laughing with surprise in the theater when I saw Jared Harris in it.

Jared Harris is a fantastic actor, but that American accent... He was just barely holding it together.

I think Lincoln pisses me off more than Django ever could, because its poor handling of race is way more insidious than Django. Like people are talking about the issues with Django and Tarantino (and continuing to talk about them even though it's been out for awhile), at least.

I agree that Lincoln is worse. Taking away black people's agency and acting like they had no part in their emancipation. It was ALL thanks to Abe Lincoln and his band of merry white men.

On top of that, the movie wasn't the easiest thing to follow. As in, they never made it clear why Lincoln wanted the amendment to pass, just that one day, the POTUS got up and decided to clothe himself in power, or something. Then they sorta hinted at Mary's craziness but never picked it up, and it was just a big ole mess.

People at the GGs were practically creaming themselves over that movie.

Lincoln is my favourite movie I've seen this year. It's miles betters than Django. I feel like the above commenters were missing the big idea of the movie. Makes sense if you spend four days pausing and restarting a movie tbh. Who watches stuff in parts like that and then feels free to critique the shit out of it?
