'Zero Dark Thirty makes me hate muslims'

The fil Zero Dark Thirty s now showing in theaters nationwide and reactions are starting to appear on social networks. Here are some collected on the tumblr site dapsandhugs:

muzzies 1
muzzies 2

While the film has obviously found its supporters, backlash against i continues to grow. Yesterday, director Kathryn Bigelow defended her film from charges it promotes torture in an Op-Ed for th Los Angeles Times Bigelow claimed artistic license writing, "those of us who work in the arts know that depiction is not endorsement." While this is obviously true, the film goes further than depiction. As Deepa Kumar wrote he film promotes extra judicial killing and the drone warfare that has become the hallmark of the Obama administration's "war on terror."

lol, accurate. Even after all this time and all the posts I've seen, I don't understand how people can be so small-minded.

Did you see the movie? Because, I gotta say, didn't make me like the Americans' techniques too much either. It's not exactly one of those old-school war movies. Nobody comes out looking too good IMO. I couldn't believe articles that said this movie was pro-torture; I didn't feel they watched the same movie I did.
michelleantonia 18th-Jan-2013 09:59 am (UTC)
THISSSSSSS
bellyroomfan 18th-Jan-2013 09:12 pm (UTC)
this! i think people got out of it what they wanted. people who were pro-torture going in came out that way some with people who were islamaphobic. i couldn't believe the americans but i went in thinking it terrible we just killed osama without a trial or anything so yeah.
eucatastrophe 19th-Jan-2013 07:51 am (UTC)
In general I think movies have to careful about how much they show of things like torture and rape. Even though I think it's true to art to be realistic and show the suffering of the victim unfortunately there are always sickos who love it.
I think that's where the whole pro-torture angle comes from, I haven't seen the movie but from what I've heard I don't think it is meant to be pro-torture but I think they went further than people feel comfortable with, and those people feel concerned about how the scenes could be potentially perceived, just like if a movie show too much of a graphic rape it could be viewed as rape porn even if that was not the intention of the director.
americnxidiot 21st-Jan-2013 02:47 pm (UTC)
That's how I felt. The torture scenes were gruesome and came across as very cruel.
mjspice 18th-Jan-2013 12:19 pm (UTC)
Yeah not even surprised one bit.
arcadiaego 18th-Jan-2013 09:01 pm (UTC)
I think idiots like this would be islamaphobic without help.

summerswings 20th-Jan-2013 08:22 am (UTC)
No idea what those idiots are watching, this movie made me hate the U.S. government, not Muslims.

By the credits I wasn't even sure who the real terrorists were. I thought it was a good portrayal.

And yet I'm sure if I watch it with my boyfriend, he'll walk out hating muslims too. It's all perspective.
hippie_chick 17th-Jan-2013 11:02 pm (UTC)
As if I hadn't lost enough faith in humanity. OMG.
summerswings 20th-Jan-2013 08:23 am (UTC)
No kidding =\ This shit makes me fearful. If these ignorant assholes weren't so lazy, I would expect a holocaust 2.0: exterminate islam

Well, she could have shown the pakistanis that participated in finding Bin Laden, just saying.
wheresandrae 17th-Jan-2013 11:05 pm (UTC)
You're right. But that wasn't going to keep these racist twats from being racist twats
ediesedgwick 17th-Jan-2013 11:07 pm (UTC)
IT'S JUST A MOVIE GEEZ! I mean god, you can't just expect a filmmaker who defends herself from controversy with "historical accuracy" to be, like, historically accurate.
hrhobo 17th-Jan-2013 11:34 pm (UTC)
i don't know if that one guy was supposed to be pakistani, but there was only 1 brown person that worked with/for maya pretty much throughout the whole movie. idk if they ever said his name tho :/ i know bigelow wanted this to be about a woman behind this manhunt, but i wish she did more with him. I mean he did a fuck-load of stuff in the movie, but we never got to know him like we did the white characters.
deja_vu822 18th-Jan-2013 12:14 am (UTC)

it's on the people not the movie. not all of us come out of it with these thoughts.
hera_bearrra 17th-Jan-2013 11:07 pm (UTC)
Well, let's not pretend she has NOTHING to do with it. The way the media portrays minorities affects the way the public perceives them.

too late sry :(

i think a lot of ppl have made up their mind about the movie w/o even seeing it or gone in with a biased mind. it really was a great film on the costs of war and revenge...tbh these ppl were already racist to say this shit and i doubt they have the neuron capacity to even understand the film beyond bin laden and navy seals so...

I'm so tired of Westerners (esp. feminists) talking about hijab/niqab/burqas and trying to paint every woman who wears one as "oppressed". There are a lot of women who are forced or brainwashed into wearing them but there are also plenty of women choose their own paths.
mjspice 18th-Jan-2013 12:19 pm (UTC)

Lol pretty amazing how this movie is hated by both liberals and conservatives.
zurbraran 18th-Jan-2013 01:16 am (UTC)
It's pretty fascinating to read the differences (and similarities) in what right-wingers and left-wingers didn't like about ZDT - not surprisingly for a movie that doesn't take an explicit position, it's serving as a kind of Rorschach test for the person reviewing it.

Though one of the weirder aspects has been how many supposed left-wingers basically claim that the movie's depiction of torture is inaccurate "because the CIA & US government said so, so it must be true!" Yikes.
ediesedgwick 18th-Jan-2013 02:19 pm (UTC)
Re: Your second point. I don't personally believe the CIA when they say that they didn't use torture for key intel to get Bin Laden, I'm 99.9% sure that they said that because they didn't want to put a damper on what people saw as a victory for the US. But her source of information for this movie was the CIA, and her movie is not consistent with what they say happened, so it's still not "historically accurate" according to the version of history presented by her sources.

Do you see what I mean? It would be another thing entirely if she had unearthed all this other evidence that went against the CIA's account of things, and then incorporated that into her movie. One of my problems with the movie is that she got her research from pretty much the most biased source imaginable in the first place, and then on top of that she took some creative liberties with their account of things, but still tries to defend her depiction of torture as useful in the script because it's "accurate."

It's more problematic because the viewer is clearly meant to empathize with the torturers throughout the movie anyway. They aren't punished for what they did, they are rewarded with a successful mission even if someone wants to claim victory is portrayed as hollow.

all these racist little shits
lanugi 17th-Jan-2013 11:05 pm (UTC)
I saw this movie last weekend. It just left me uncomfortable tbh. The torture scenes were too long, at one point this CIA guy is walking a suspected terrorist on a leash for 5 minutes and people in the theater were laughing.

Seeing people get physically and emotionally tortured and killed just doesn't give me enjoyment, even if they're terrorists.

hera_bearrra 17th-Jan-2013 11:11 pm (UTC)
Especially considering the U.S. irl also tortures people who are only SUSPECTED of being terrorists

That's so fucking creepy. Hopefully no one brought their kids along for that joyous experience.

there were at least 5 or 6 six year olds at mine :/
hjohnson 17th-Jan-2013 11:18 pm (UTC)
I don't think it's supposed to give you enjoyment. The fact that it did is fucked up of THE PEOPLE WHO WERE LAUGHING not the movie makers. I'm glad it made you uncomfortable, I'd be more concerned if it didnt.

I understand not wanting to feel uncomfortable, that's why I only got through about half of the movie last weekend. But I don't think they could have made a movie about this that was all fun and games
d00ditsemily 17th-Jan-2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
People were laughing next me too. While I felt like I was going to vomit.

wow my reaction to that scene was completely 180 from these ppl.
evett 17th-Jan-2013 11:37 pm (UTC)
The only part I found disturbing was at the beginning where they played the actual 911 tapes of the people in the tower.

I've seen worse torture scenes in other films so that didn't bother me. I guess I was expecting something more horrifying by the way people were talking about the torture scenes.
swissbeauty23 17th-Jan-2013 11:57 pm (UTC)
Sadly I'm not surprised. :(
insensibilities 18th-Jan-2013 12:09 am (UTC)
I could barely stand to look at the torture scenes. Thankfully no one in my theatre laughed, I would have been horrified.

ugh my palms got super sweaty and my heart rate when up during those scenes. so gross

it's really disgusting how muslims/minorities have been completely dehumanized so that a scene like that is funny. if it was the other way around, i'm sure you could have heard a pin drop in that theatre.
