'Zero Dark Thirty makes me hate muslims'
The fil Zero Dark Thirty s now showing in theaters nationwide and reactions are starting to appear on social networks. Here are some collected on the tumblr site dapsandhugs:

While the film has obviously found its supporters, backlash against i continues to grow. Yesterday, director Kathryn Bigelow defended her film from charges it promotes torture in an Op-Ed for th Los Angeles Times Bigelow claimed artistic license writing, "those of us who work in the arts know that depiction is not endorsement." While this is obviously true, the film goes further than depiction. As Deepa Kumar wrote he film promotes extra judicial killing and the drone warfare that has become the hallmark of the Obama administration's "war on terror."

i wish i could be surprised.
I think that's where the whole pro-torture angle comes from, I haven't seen the movie but from what I've heard I don't think it is meant to be pro-torture but I think they went further than people feel comfortable with, and those people feel concerned about how the scenes could be potentially perceived, just like if a movie show too much of a graphic rape it could be viewed as rape porn even if that was not the intention of the director.
By the credits I wasn't even sure who the real terrorists were. I thought it was a good portrayal.
And yet I'm sure if I watch it with my boyfriend, he'll walk out hating muslims too. It's all perspective.

i think a lot of ppl have made up their mind about the movie w/o even seeing it or gone in with a biased mind. it really was a great film on the costs of war and revenge...tbh these ppl were already racist to say this shit and i doubt they have the neuron capacity to even understand the film beyond bin laden and navy seals so...
Though one of the weirder aspects has been how many supposed left-wingers basically claim that the movie's depiction of torture is inaccurate "because the CIA & US government said so, so it must be true!" Yikes.
Do you see what I mean? It would be another thing entirely if she had unearthed all this other evidence that went against the CIA's account of things, and then incorporated that into her movie. One of my problems with the movie is that she got her research from pretty much the most biased source imaginable in the first place, and then on top of that she took some creative liberties with their account of things, but still tries to defend her depiction of torture as useful in the script because it's "accurate."
It's more problematic because the viewer is clearly meant to empathize with the torturers throughout the movie anyway. They aren't punished for what they did, they are rewarded with a successful mission even if someone wants to claim victory is portrayed as hollow.

Seeing people get physically and emotionally tortured and killed just doesn't give me enjoyment, even if they're terrorists.
what the FUCK.
I understand not wanting to feel uncomfortable, that's why I only got through about half of the movie last weekend. But I don't think they could have made a movie about this that was all fun and games
I've seen worse torture scenes in other films so that didn't bother me. I guess I was expecting something more horrifying by the way people were talking about the torture scenes.
my theater was pretty full and no one had that reaction at all
have they ever been put on trial jw
innocent until proven guilty and all that
