Forbes' Highest-Grossing Romantic Couples

7

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, when movie lovers’ thoughts turn to romance films. Older folks might think of putting on Casablanca; Gen X’ers,Say Anything. What does it say about the millennial generation that the most popular love story of their time involves a young lady, a vampire and a werewolf?

That’s why Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson land at the top of our list of Hollywood’s Highest-Grossing Romantic Couples. We looked at the top-grossing romantic movies of the last three years. Twilight was by far the biggest box office winner over that period, earning $1.17 billion.

The fact that we get to track the couple’s off-screen romance along with their on-screen love just adds to the overall romance of the films. The couple is reportedly back together after breaking up over Stewart’s fling with the married director of her film Snow White and the Huntsman.

Pattinson is also a member of the 10th place couple on our list alongside Reese Witherspoon. Their film Water for Elephants earned $59 million in the U.S. in 2011. Those aren’t Twilight numbers, but considering that the movie brought in an extra $58 million internationally and only cost $38 million to make, it was a small hit.

To compile our list, we looked at the top-grossing romantic movies as classified by Box Office Mojo over the past three years and added up each couple’s total U.S.box office. While StewPatz have an advantage because they appeared in three high-grossing movies together during our time frame, there were other actors who also did well.

Like Channing Tatum, who ranks twice on our list. Tatum and Rachel McAdams place second thanks to last year’s hit The Vow. The story of a women who loses some of her memory in a car accident earned $125 million in the U.S. and another $71 million overseas. That means the $30 million film turned a nice profit for Sony‘s ScreenGems division.

Tatum is also part of the sixth-ranked couple on our list with Amanda Seyfried. Their 2010 movie Dear John earned $80 million in the U.S. and another $35 million abroad. That film was based on a Nicholas Sparks book. The author is a Hollywood gold mine of romantic plots. The movie version of his book Safe Haven is the biggest romantic film scheduled to hit theaters this Valentine’s Day.

Two other couples made our list from Nicholas Sparks movies. Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus place eighth with $63 million for The Last Song. The 2010 film was not only a hit with romance fans, it also sparked a real-life love story: Cyrus and Hemsworth, who met on the set, are now engaged to be married.

Ranking ninth just behind Hemsworth and Cyrus are Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling. The couple lit up the screen last year in The Lucky One, also based on a Sparks book — the film grossed $60 million. Efron, best known for playing Troy in the High School Musical movies, played an Iraq war vet looking for a woman whose photo he believed helped save his life. The success of the film should help Efron move beyond his teen heartthrob status.

Let's all take a moment to reflect on why all these films made so much money.

Now lets all take a moment and reflect on how we can change that.
smokesinatra 17th-Jan-2013 10:08 pm (UTC)
everyone on ontd should vow to go to some indie film at least once this year instead of some typical high budget studio rom com imo
k5memo 17th-Jan-2013 10:11 pm (UTC)
and we need the receipts for "membership renewal".
therearewords 17th-Jan-2013 10:43 pm (UTC)

1.) Teenagers.

2.) I shouldn't go there.
moddchicc 17th-Jan-2013 10:04 pm (UTC)
No Strings Attached was honestly one of the worst romcoms I've ever seen.

They also have NSA and FWB mixed up in the caption, lol

I don't care for any of these on-screen couplings.

I really liked Miley's hair like that.
la_petite_singe 17th-Jan-2013 10:05 pm (UTC)
Wow, I didn't like ANY of these movies. I am such a grumpy old man.
aubade_saudade 17th-Jan-2013 10:06 pm (UTC)
Rom coms are so fucking crap these days but I understand why people go

You never expect anything from a romcom and sometimes nothing else appeals so it's like the safety choice
spartacus 17th-Jan-2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
You've Got Mail is such a great one.
shipoffools22 17th-Jan-2013 10:22 pm (UTC)
youve got mail is amazing and a classic. also makes me nostalgic for aol and the early years of internet
ljubavirakija 17th-Jan-2013 10:11 pm (UTC)
It's sad how predictable rom coms are nowadays

Rom coms from the late 80's-mid 90's were the shit
insertcandyhere 17th-Jan-2013 10:17 pm (UTC)
I like a few such as Never Been Kissed, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 50 First Dates. Those are the first ones that come to mind.

There's something about current rom coms that when I first see them I'm like aw that was cute but then a day passes and I really think about the movie and I'm like....that was such a terrible movie. I felt that way about Something Borrowed and The Backup Plan
mydogfred 17th-Jan-2013 10:24 pm (UTC)
sometimes if you're having a rough time or you just have a day off, you don't want to think. you just want to sit back and watch something cute.
misscrystal 17th-Jan-2013 10:55 pm (UTC)
Love, Actually and Ms. Pettigrew Lives For A Day are the only rom-coms I can stand. They're actually two of my favorite movies.
joaniemaloney 17th-Jan-2013 11:12 pm (UTC)
it's rare these days but sometimes I just love the cast and I want to see the couple get together. I see a crapload of dramas and skip on a lot of action movies so I need to have my fun once in a while.
tobiveil12 17th-Jan-2013 11:31 pm (UTC)
There actually not. If you think about it the rom coms of the ninties and eighties that everyone calls classic would not be able to make it in todays markets either. It's not the genre it's the audience. The eighties were a time that cheezy films were accepted and the audience werent as cynical, the ninties were the days of being an outcast so there were a market for films that touched on that. Now a days there is no niche of the times. IT's why I will never understand why people refuse to give Aniston credit. No one else sells rom coms like she does.
smokesinatra 17th-Jan-2013 10:07 pm (UTC)
miley and liam are both done up in a super "hollywood-glam" style but they totally don't look the part?? neither of them have that ~striking starpower look imo. it's weird to think that in a few decades, that this pair (and pairs that look like them) will be this generation's hollywood starlets
licorrice 17th-Jan-2013 10:07 pm (UTC)
the movie with liam and miley was sf bad.
benicebitch 17th-Jan-2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
I'm a Miley stan but ia. It was so bad.
pineandapple 17th-Jan-2013 10:11 pm (UTC)
I don't know why people still consider her for roles.
cerseilannister 17th-Jan-2013 10:14 pm (UTC)
it was so dull
kknee13 17th-Jan-2013 10:32 pm (UTC)
that stupid pouty face she did the whole movie was so annoying
hjohnson 17th-Jan-2013 10:44 pm (UTC)
Nicholas Sparks is like M Night Shyamalan. His movies started off good (Notebook, Walk to Remember/Six Sense, Signs) then fell into The Last Song and Nights in Rodanthe and The Lucky One (despite Efron being hot and the book being okay)
popdatpussy 18th-Jan-2013 08:22 pm (UTC)
Seriously? I loooved TLS.
I loved it back in the day & still love it.
licorrice 18th-Jan-2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
don't be offended by what I am about to say but you have awful taste in movies, that movie was completely and utterly trash.
