Django Unchained becomes Quentin Tarantino's highest grossing film

The Weinstein Company is pretty proud of Quentin Tarantino’s latest effort, Django Unchained. Aside from the two Golden Globe wins for Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz) and Best Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino), and along with the five Oscar nominations the film received (including Best Picture), Django Unchained has officially become Tarantino’s highest grossing film to date (domestically). Have a look at The Weinstein Company’s official release after the jump.

New York, NY – January 17, 2013 – The Weinstein Company (TWC) is thrilled to announce that DJANGO UNCHAINED has just become Quentin Tarantino’s highest-grossing film to date in the domestic marketplace, with a cumulative gross nearing $130 Million. The movie, starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson, was released wide on Christmas Day 2012. Tarantino’s previous record was set by INGLORIOUS BASTERDS which grossed over $120.5 Million in the U.S.

Fresh off this weekend’s two Golden Globe® wins for Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz) and Best Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino), and celebrating the movie’s five Oscar® nominations including Best Picture, DJANGO UNCHAINED is continuing to gather steam in the awards race, and continues to receive critical and popular acclaim. Some of the many supporters include the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, who released this statement, “ [DJANGO UNCHAINED] captures the cultural, physical and psychological pain heaped upon the lives of men and women of African descent-expressing in dramatic terms the existential nightmare endured by so many for so long. By this measure, the scar of violence, exploitation and subrogation made evident—and the focus of this film—is not just a picture of random violence, but portrays America at its lowest moment as a nation. The violence that we see portrayed in this drama might well renew our focus on the 256 years of racial violence that continues to be an indelible chapter in the history that is America.”

“Bob and I have had the most extraordinary filmmaker relationship with Quentin Tarantino and we are proud to be here for this incredible milestone. We also appreciate working with Amy Pascal, Michael Lynton, and the incredible Sony team on this project. They have been great partners internationally,” said Harvey Weinstein, Co-Chairman of The Weinstein Company.

While I don't think it's necessarily his best, Reservoir Dogs is probably my favourite and ultimately his film that is the most important to me.

If it wasn't for that film I probably wouldn't be doing my degree or be as in love with cinema as I am now.
lookinfoareason 17th-Jan-2013 11:45 pm (UTC)
The soundtrack for that movie was so cool.
ladywilde80 17th-Jan-2013 09:13 pm (UTC)
Srsly, does QT even make bad films? Or even mediocre ones? I'd say each of his films are always great if not fucking fantastic, flawless, genius etc.
megalixer 17th-Jan-2013 10:06 pm (UTC)
I can see where people don't like his style or would consider him a style-over-substance director, but IMO he out of all of the directors working today has the best instinctive grasp on how to make a movie entertaining. Which IMO is the most important thing because if you're not entertained by a movie, then why even watch it tbh
ladywilde80 17th-Jan-2013 10:14 pm (UTC)
Yes, this exactly. No matter what I'm always entertained. I never leave the theater feeling as if I have wasted either my time or my money. I have never NOT enjoyed myself.
solid_girl 19th-Jan-2013 03:13 am (UTC)
ia. Although I find him more style AND substance rather than one over the other.

I'll say this for QT; he makes me all sorts of awe, and sometimes annoyed, but I'm never bored.

Didn't watch Django in the cinema, I'll admit, because I didn't really want to pay for a movie with the N word, you know?

He does not make bad films. Or hasn't yet, at least.
hormoaning 17th-Jan-2013 09:14 pm (UTC)
Inglourious basterds
andgedem 17th-Jan-2013 09:36 pm (UTC)
Django is my first QT film, so I've got some catching up to do.
grotesque_xxx 17th-Jan-2013 09:41 pm (UTC)
you should see Kill Bill 1&2 or Pulp Fiction next :)
joaniemaloney 17th-Jan-2013 11:26 pm (UTC)
it's only my second! Inglourious Basterds was my other one. ;)
lookinfoareason 17th-Jan-2013 11:44 pm (UTC)
I say start with Pulp Fiction. It was my first back in grade school. It shaped my taste in movies AND music. (which my dad was super pumped about, since it made me a ridiculously huge Al Green fan.)
milkradio 22nd-Jan-2013 08:25 pm (UTC)
omg yes you certainly do! My favs are Kill Bill 1 and 2 along with Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Django Unchained now. I still need to see Jackie Brown though.
mandramoddle 17th-Jan-2013 10:04 pm (UTC)
I contributed. You're welcome, Q.
megalixer 17th-Jan-2013 10:04 pm (UTC)
For me personally:

Kill Bill (1 and 2, he planned/filmed it as one so I count it as one)
Inglorious Basterds
Pulp Fiction = Django Unchained
Jackie Brown
Reservoir Dogs
Death Proof

But I love them all so it's like ranking children tbh. All of them are pretty high on the general list of "movies I consider my favorite ever"
m_pendulum 17th-Jan-2013 10:57 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen Reservior Dogs, but I've seen everything else so it's

Jackie Brown
Pulp Fiction
Death Proof
Kill Bill
Inglorious Bastards
Django Unchained
lookinfoareason 17th-Jan-2013 11:43 pm (UTC)
I fucking LOVE Jackie Brown. No one else does!

(I also love Merlin and Gwen is a GODDESS.)
m_pendulum 17th-Jan-2013 11:45 pm (UTC)
Your taste is flawless :)
l27freakshow 17th-Jan-2013 11:18 pm (UTC)
Has anyone seen Four Rooms? QT wrote/directed part of it, but I've never watched it. I love Tim Roth and he's in it.
lookinfoareason 17th-Jan-2013 11:42 pm (UTC)
IT'S AWESOME.

It's seriously great. It's not ALL directed by Tarantino, but every section is worth seeing.
l27freakshow 17th-Jan-2013 11:44 pm (UTC)
I knew he only did a section of it, but it looked funny. I think it's on instant netflix...or at least it used to be.
fraubluecher 17th-Jan-2013 11:45 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's nothing too special. Unfortunately circumstances forced me to watch it twice and the second time I was pretty bored and ready to strrrragnleeee Tim Roth and his preciously weird acting, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it once!
grotesque_xxx 18th-Jan-2013 12:46 pm (UTC)
it's amazing movie ;D
pullmystrings 17th-Jan-2013 11:19 pm (UTC)
I get that QT is a creepy asshole but he is s u c h a good director. I think my fav movie of his was probably Pulp Fiction but I want to try and watch more since I've loved every one I've seen.
joaniemaloney 17th-Jan-2013 11:26 pm (UTC)
I was kinda iffy going into this but I ended up seeing it in theatres and it was really entertaining. wow. the cast was great. Leo deserves a bit more praise but I gotta say Christoph had my heart. there's something about him that's charismatic as hell.
xcollsangelx 17th-Jan-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
All because of Leo

lookinfoareason 17th-Jan-2013 11:40 pm (UTC)
Oh god, I'm finally seeing it friday. I was supposed to see it Boxing Day and my friends kept bailing. I highly regret not just telling them to get fucked and seeing it alone.

I don't know my favourite. They're all my favourite in different ways. PUl Fiction had the most incredible soundtrack. Jackie Brown had pam fucking grier, inglourious bastards was riddled with hot dudes and christoph waltz in that movie gave me chills. I think my least favourite are the kill bill movies? They're so good, but I love the whole... motown, funk, blaxploitation thing. The sexy 70s are my dhit.

I've been drinking champagne and watching tarantino/rodriguez movies for hours. <-- my excuse for spelling.
grammaire 18th-Jan-2013 12:56 am (UTC)
Jackie Brown and Inglourious Basterds are my favourites.
lordfoldemort 18th-Jan-2013 02:02 am (UTC)
After seeing Django, I need to watch more QT films! Although IB wasn't that good imo.
prophecypro 18th-Jan-2013 05:35 am (UTC)
It was okay, I feel like all of QTs films regardless of topic drag heavy on self serving dialogue. But still well shot and put together and he gives the actors a lot to work with. I dont blame people for either liking or hating it.
solid_girl 19th-Jan-2013 03:16 am (UTC)
the self indulgent dialogue is the best part tho.
