FOOTBALL CATFISH SAGA CONTINUES. NOTRE DAME TEAMMATE: MANTI TE'O IS "A LIAR AND VERY GOOD ACTOR"

An anonymous Notre Dame teammate of Te’o spoke to Jackie Peppers of Pepperonsports.com who has formerly worked for ESPN, Fox Sports, The NFL Network is currently freelancing for Yahoo Sports.

The teammate shed some light on what was really going on between Te’o and his Fake Dead Cancer Girlfriend.

Here is what he had to say:

The Notre Dame football player, who asked for anonymity, told Pepper On Sports, “No we all knew he had only seen her once. But when the media was saying how he went through both deaths we knew,” said the source, referring to the back-to-back deaths of Te’o’s grandmother and girlfriend Lennay Kekua, who allegedly died of Leukemia.

In defense of the Heisman Trophy candidate, the source said he believes the lie may have indeed started with somebody duping Te’o using a phony twitter account, and eventually, faking their own death.

Early in my conversation with the source, the Notre Dame player said, “He lied, but the media blew it up.” In response to my follow-up question asking if the source thought that Te’o kept the story going because of the media attention, the player replied, “Yeah. Right after the Michigan [State] game. He should have never brought her in the media. His grandma passing was enough.”
“We would never bring it up.  But we would look at him when he would get all emotional during media about his girl,” the player said.
When asked if he thought Te’o was a good actor, the player replied, “Very good.”

This sounds accurate to me, but instead of manning up, Te’o will play the victim.  The reality is it was his attention whoring that got him into the situation he is in now.
Here is the best case scenario theory for Te’o and there are a lot of wild rumors going.  It is possible originally he was Catfished, but once the media picked up the story, he didn’t dare admit that the person he was talking to wasn’t real.  His Ego got in the way and had him doing interviews like the one he did with Jim Rome where he plays up the relationship like it was a magical love between two people who met on a football field.
Just like with most lies they started to stack on top of each other and got bigger and bigger to the point Te’o was simply in too deep. Once he realized he had been duped and it was possible he could get exposed he confessed to Notre Dame claiming he was the victim.

IMO, i think he was in on it and the only people who got catfished was the national media not te'o

Te'o/his family created a fake girl - dad told media they had met her etc then someone discovered her pics belonged to a different girl and suddenly things crumbled. Her twitter was locked, she got in a car crash and got leukemia and "died" the same day as his grandmother.

Now it's all coming out I guess. Idk I don't really know whats going on.
vehiclesshockme 17th-Jan-2013 05:15 am (UTC)
So like they couldn't decide between car accident and cancer and were like fuck it and went with both?

Also I swear those are the two most common fake internet deaths.
mydogfred 17th-Jan-2013 03:49 am (UTC)
what gaybash said and he played really well all season, #2 in Heisman voting. the media ate up that his girlfriend and grandma died on the same day and he was able to "overcome" it.

the "i was a victim of an internet hoax" story is problematic because he stated multiple times how he met her, his dad met her, they vacationed in Hawaii together. now Notre Dame is trying to play it up as "met her ONLINE". i don't buy it, especially after Notre Dame covered up that rape/suicide case recently.
cupkate 17th-Jan-2013 04:38 am (UTC)
The girl whose real pics were being used found out what was happening and said that a failed football player she went to high school with had recently asked her for a weird pic (her holding a sign with his initials) saying that it was for a sick friend.

It turns out Te'o and this dude are good friends irl, and whether he knew it or not, his friend was at least running some of the catfish show.
vehiclesshockme 17th-Jan-2013 05:14 am (UTC)
Seriously. I slept all day and now that I'm awake I have no idea what the fuck is going on.

Literally what the fuck is wrong with the general state of football players this past season.
fashionbb 17th-Jan-2013 03:38 am (UTC)
I think this is becoming a big story because of Deadspin.

I feel like I didn't hear about this at all. I didnt even know what this was til today.
spartacus 17th-Jan-2013 03:41 am (UTC)
It was huge in sports this year. It was always was mentioned.
handsdowntoo 17th-Jan-2013 03:43 am (UTC)
They talked about it every single time ND played since her "death." Often, multiple times.
ugly_jacket 17th-Jan-2013 03:43 am (UTC)
the most i saw of any notre dame game this year was flipping channels and i heard about it
mydogfred 17th-Jan-2013 03:45 am (UTC)
it was the inspirational NCAA story of this season
derka_drka 17th-Jan-2013 03:51 am (UTC)
deadspin did the investigation and broke the story.
dancedallnight 17th-Jan-2013 03:54 am (UTC)
idek what made deadspin investigate this story lol. Like someone on ESPN was saying how he looked for the obituary and didn't find one, but didn't really put much thought into it. I just want to know what makes you even thinking about researching whether or not someone's dead girlfriend ever existed.
bluesforgotten 17th-Jan-2013 03:52 am (UTC)
Literally EVERY ND article this year talked about the GF/grandma death. And I'm a big fan, I read 'em all.
runaround_kid 17th-Jan-2013 05:19 am (UTC)
it was pretty big, i mean he was on the cover of sports illustrated

I had no clue about this until today, but I don't care about college sports so that may be why.
crazyjaney 17th-Jan-2013 03:39 am (UTC)
I'm trying to figure out which teammate would talk about this.

baloola 17th-Jan-2013 03:40 am (UTC)
So I haven't been following this too closely but I don't understand how it's normal for a Notre Dame football player to have an online-only girlfriend even if she was real.
distant_lines 17th-Jan-2013 03:49 am (UTC)
He's Mormon.
raised_eyebrows 17th-Jan-2013 03:54 am (UTC)
That explains everything.
crazyjaney 17th-Jan-2013 03:51 am (UTC)
Being gay at a Catholic school is hard. Being a gay Mormon is extremely hard. Being a gay pro football player is close to impossible. If he was worried about having to come out I can see the fake girlfriend thing happening.
schmanda 17th-Jan-2013 03:41 am (UTC)
I can think of no possible way that he wasn't in on it.
handsdowntoo 17th-Jan-2013 03:41 am (UTC)
I think he was definitely in on it. He brought all the stuff to the media (how they met, her illness, sleeping on the phone with her, where her fake funeral was, different dates of when she died) so its pretty impossible for me to believe he's an innocent victim.

I do too. I just imagine sitting at home and seeing the pic on television and it is you. I would flip out.
t3pps 17th-Jan-2013 03:59 am (UTC)
The really messed up thing is her pic wasn't stolen off the net. She gave it to her friend, who happens to be Te'o's "friend" and that's how it ended up being used.
ediesedgwick 17th-Jan-2013 04:14 am (UTC)
lmao awkward
deceitful 17th-Jan-2013 04:20 am (UTC)
The one she noticed was from her Facebook. The one she gave her friend she saw on Twitter and was like ???? and then it got removed right after she talked to that friend. I think.

MTE
mydogfred 17th-Jan-2013 03:43 am (UTC)
lmao

the craziest thing to me is that he is a very famous college player and he falls in love with this girl and they never facetime?? skype? exchange more than 1 picture?

and then he goes on tv interviews, at every Notre Dame game, pointing towards the sky, crying about her. making a HUGE deal of her. if you "met" someone online and were in the public eye like he was, maybe you would not bring so much attention to it??

idk my mind is blown
dancedallnight 17th-Jan-2013 03:51 am (UTC)
seriously. I could understand if he was like 55 or something, but he's 21. Not to mention, it'd be different if neither of them knew what the other looked like, but he was never once like hey so you see me every fucking week on tv, can we at least video chat? she already showed him her picture, so it's not like she didn't want him to see what she looks like. especially since they had ~ allegedly ~ met in person for the first time after the stanford game. like wouldn't he be like hey this picture doesn't match up with the person I met.

Not to mention, there are multiple reports of when she ACTUALLY died. like did she die before you grandma, after her, 3 days later, 4 days later? Like how do you not know the exact day that 2 MAJOR life events happened?!
mydogfred 17th-Jan-2013 03:56 am (UTC)
right like if your grandma and girlfriend died on September 11th, you think you'd remember? pretty big tragedies to occur on a day like that
whutness 17th-Jan-2013 04:13 am (UTC)
mte I'm so amazed by the whole thing
stop_drop_rolll 17th-Jan-2013 03:43 am (UTC)
God, I am a HUUUGE Notre Dame football fan and i could not be more embarrassed about this right now. I can't imagine how the rest of them feel right now.
crazyjaney 17th-Jan-2013 03:45 am (UTC)
Ugh, same. I talked about it with my brother tonight and his mind is just blown.
