Notre Dame football star gets Catfished, or is just full of shit

Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend, The Most Heartbreaking And Inspirational Story Of The College Football Season, Is A Hoax

Timothy Burke and Jack Dickey

Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, the stories said, played this season under a terrible burden. A Mormon linebacker who led his Catholic school's football program back to glory, Te'o was whipsawed between personal tragedies along the way. In the span of six hours in September, as Sports Illustrated told it, Te'o learned first of the death of his grandmother, Annette Santiago, and then of the death of his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua.

Kekua, 22 years old, had been in a serious car accident in California, and then had been diagnosed with leukemia.
SI's Pete Thamel described how Te'o would phone her in her hospital room and stay on the line with her as he slept through the night. "Her relatives told him that at her lowest points, as she fought to emerge from a coma, her breathing rate would increase at the sound of his voice," Thamel wrote.

Upon receiving the news of the two deaths, Te'o went out and led the Fighting Irish to a 20-3 upset of Michigan State, racking up 12 tackles. It was heartbreaking and inspirational. Te'o would appear on ESPN's College GameDay to talk about the letters Kekua had written him during her illness. He would send a heartfelt letter to the parents of a sick child, discussing his experience with disease and grief. The South Bend Tribune wrote an article describing the young couple's fairytale meeting—she, a Stanford student; he, a Notre Dame star—after a football game outside Palo Alto.

Did you enjoy the uplifiting story, the tale of a man who responded to adversity by becoming one of the top players of the game? If so, stop reading.

Manti Te'o did lose his grandmother this past fall. Annette Santiago died on Sept. 11, 2012, at the age of 72, according to Social Security Administration records in Nexis. But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper.

Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar's office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there's no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.

The photographs identified as Kekua—in online tributes and on TV news reports—are pictures from the social-media accounts of a 22-year-old California woman who is not named Lennay Kekua. She is not a Stanford graduate; she has not been in a severe car accident; and she does not have leukemia. And she has never met Manti Te'o.

Read the (long) article at the source. It's worth it.

UPDATE: Notre Dame's statement
“On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.”

UPDATE 2: Manti Te'o's statement
"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.

"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

"It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.

"I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.

"In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.

"Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."
Whatever dude.

Guess we know why he skipped the Senior Bowl now. Besides the fact that SEC players would be there.
danceparties 16th-Jan-2013 10:47 pm (UTC)
So not only is he lying but now Notre Dame is trying to cover for him too. Hahahahaa. All of this plus he's already been exposed as a shitty football player.

I'm less inclined to believe that Te'o is a victim in this. He was probably a willing participant but I guess I don't really see what the motivation behind it would be except good or favorable press.
mydogfred 16th-Jan-2013 10:50 pm (UTC)
sob story looks good for his Heisman campaign. the story about his "girlfriend" and grandma dying the same day was all over the place.
sayanythinglove 16th-Jan-2013 10:53 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I get that but I'm like so surprised that no one in the media did any sort of research or fact-checking about this story until after the campaign was over. It's like some mass conspiracy that this got released now instead of earlier.
bluesforgotten 17th-Jan-2013 03:04 am (UTC)
but the girlfriend was created way before the grandma died. idk i get that if they ahd already made her up, great sob story. but i wonder why they made her up in the first place.
tommybeulah 16th-Jan-2013 10:54 pm (UTC)
He was part of it. He talked about how he and his gf vacationed here in Hawaii.
msloserrific 16th-Jan-2013 11:05 pm (UTC)
People are speculating this was a plot to cover up his sexuality that snowballed out of control.
metyouwho 16th-Jan-2013 10:48 pm (UTC)
I torn between laughing because Notre Dame this made me roll my eyes all over the place, feeling outraged, and feeling sad, in case he did this to cover up the fact that he's gay.
egads 16th-Jan-2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
If he did it for that reason, it is sad, but there's saying you have/had a girlfriend and then making all this shit up for sympathy.
metyouwho 16th-Jan-2013 10:52 pm (UTC)
Yeah he took it too far but I'd rather him be an asshole than have issues coming to terms with his sexuality. It's more fun if I can just laugh at him.
handsdowntoo 16th-Jan-2013 11:13 pm (UTC)
Pretend a friend is your girlfriend. I could see making up a fake one but claiming she died for sympathy is fucked up.
duckyduck92 16th-Jan-2013 11:19 pm (UTC)
oooohhhhhh are there strong rumors he is gay?
spillvegas 16th-Jan-2013 11:21 pm (UTC)
i don't think he's gay, i think he's just crazy. i mean, i'm not saying those two things are mutually exclusive, but still.
frenchverbs 16th-Jan-2013 11:58 pm (UTC)
If he was trying to cover up that he was gay, why not ask a close female friend to play the role of a gf until he got drafted? I think it's awful he needs to hide his sexuality, but to make up such elaborate lies is crazy to me.
powerbottom 16th-Jan-2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
OH MY GOD I AM LAUGHING
msloserrific 16th-Jan-2013 11:06 pm (UTC)

powerbottom 16th-Jan-2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
So she died in the car crash of leukemia?
hecubus 16th-Jan-2013 10:54 pm (UTC)
apparently leukemia put her in a choke hold, causing her to lose control of the car and swerve off a bridge into a watery grave.
andisprohi 16th-Jan-2013 11:35 pm (UTC)
Her death was brought to you by Francine Pascal
mydogfred 16th-Jan-2013 10:56 pm (UTC)

chibi 16th-Jan-2013 11:04 pm (UTC)
notre dame dun curr about anything when it comes to their football players. the whole thing ~6 months ago about a few of them getting caught underage drinking and assaulting police officers immediately disappeared when they started winning.
kvetch_kvetch 17th-Jan-2013 12:04 am (UTC)
welp not applying to notre dame for grad school

Surprised no one come on special snowflaking about being a good Mormon/Catholic yet...
powerbottom 16th-Jan-2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
noon 16th-Jan-2013 10:50 pm (UTC)
lol did he/whoever else was involved really think they could get away with this

the native/polynesian community at stanford is rill small they would notice a random dead alum sprouting out of the ground
not to mention the woman he stole the picture from would eventually realize her face is being plastered all over the news with some fake name

what a flop
dawn9476 16th-Jan-2013 10:52 pm (UTC)
If it wasn't the an internet blog, he probably would have. This shows a total failure of print and network sports media.
powerbottom 16th-Jan-2013 10:59 pm (UTC)
He should have taken a goddamn leap back to reality.
deceitful 16th-Jan-2013 10:53 pm (UTC)
Wow. My cousin was just telling me about this story over Christmas. Everyone involved is a complete scumbag. That poor girl who was the face of the fake ex girlfriend must have had quite a shock to see that she was dead.
msloserrific 16th-Jan-2013 11:11 pm (UTC)
I feel so bad for her. I'd feel so violated that someone was rooting through my facebook photos and making a media spectacle with my face
ediesedgwick 16th-Jan-2013 11:17 pm (UTC)
mte that's so surreal
frenchverbs 16th-Jan-2013 11:59 pm (UTC)
