Rupert Murdoch Shares His Feelings

Remember the story the other day about the 400 Lb. black woman who fell through the NYC sidewalk??? Of course you do. And of course some old white guy is sharing his opinion on how this woman got to be so fat…

Via Gawker

You may have heard about the woman who, last week, fell through a New York City sidewalk. The woman, a 32-year-old social worker who weighs 400 pounds and is 6'5", fell six feet into a basement, breaking her arm. She was otherwise uninjured, mostly because her size. "Thank God, they said that my size was the only thing that saved me," she told the New York Post. That was three days ago.

Rupert Murdoch, who owns the paper (NY Post) that broke the story, is just now catching up. His appropriate and compassionate response? Yes, food stamps are to blame, Rupert. Good call. There’s definitely nothing racist about assuming that an overweight black woman must be on welfare. Also, what an ideal time to discuss obesity and its effect on health care costs.

SMH. And here was his “apology”…

Man. Some folks certainly need to think thrice (not once, twice, but three times) before expressing their opinion via the Twitters….

Is the structural integrity of NYC sidewalks that weak? I have never heard of someone actually falling through the sidewalk.

Murdoch is an idiot. Don't worry asshole, you's still have 80 billion dollars in your pocket after you pay the taxes you are bitching about.

oh god that does not surprise me

From my understanding it was one of those grate/vent things on the sidewalk that collapsed but apparently some of the sidewalk around it collapsed too. And yeah, that's terrifying.

I forget that NYC has a whole sublevel, and prone to sinkholes. Just a scary thought that you suddenly be sucked into the ground.

Oh god that scares me so much. I never walk on those things because I've always been paranoid about that happening. If you fall through one of those you could fall five feet or you could fall 200 feet. :/

I get nervous whenever I walk on grates

I avoid grates like the plague - I walk around them...can't bring myself to be over them at any time. -_-

omg that is actually one of my worst fears not even kidding. i always make sure i'm paying attention so i can avoid walking on grates.

There was a video of this happening in another country not long ago, there was a space below the sidewalk so it gave way. I've actually seen it happen here in the UK, not someone falling through, but a large hole opening in the pavement where presumably the ground had worn away beneath.

No not really. The grates aren't actually meant to be walked on or stood on for that matter. It something I use to hear from my parents all the time "Don't stand on the grates you might fall into one" etc, but people ignore it because it's never happened to them or people they know.

This however isn't even the first time someone has fallen into one because it's collapsed or the first time someones fallen into one and lived.

What?? Most large cities have very large grates in the middle of extremely busy pedestrian walkways. There is no way people are meant to hug the walls and walk in the inches of space around them. Those grates are definitely going to get foot traffic, and a lot of it, and are legally designed to support it.
