NY MAG on Girls, Weight Loss, and Television

So much has been made of Lena Dunham’s penchant for flaunting her less-than-perfect body on the HBO series she writes, directs, and stars in, that it’s been easy to overlook how the other girls of Girls bucked the repressive Hollywood standard of beauty too. During the first season, Girls co-stars Jemima Kirke and Allison Williams played what can, in TV parlance, be described as the hot and pretty friends, and indeed they were hot and pretty — but in a refreshingly normal way. That is to say, neither was particularly skinny that first season — certainly not Hollywood skinny. Trim, yes, but their bellies were noticeably soft, their hips curvy and faces full. Like so many of us, they’d look luscious in bikinis, like women who enjoyed brunch and weren’t cultish about spinning. And yet they were no less attractive or desirable: Kirke as the sexually adventurous, bohemian femme fatale with “a face like Brigitte Bardot and an ass like Rihanna,” so tempting she breaks up a marriage; and Williams as the uptight career gal with the classically patrician face and curves, who attracts a hot young artist at his own art show.

This realism was a departure from the standard template of a sexually desirable woman we’re used to seeing on TV and film in recent years: typically modelesque things with cut arms, a smooth hip line, and flat abs. Today, most sitcom actresses have the kind of fantasy figures that in real life require hours at the gym: Cheryl Hines as a hard-bodied cougar on Suburgatory, Krysten Ritter’s willowy vixen in Don’t Trust the B---- In Apartment 23, Sofia Vergara as an impossibly buoyant trophy wife in Modern Family. (Even Vergara's theoretically less-glamorous Modern Family foil is the astonishingly toned Julie Bowen.) There are exceptions, of course, among them Kat Dennings on Two Broke Girls and Mindy Kaling on The Mindy Project, but neither character spends much time unclothed or rolling around in the sack. That isn’t the case on Girls, where sexually explicit, skin-baring hookups are frequent and much like in life, having a stick-thin body is secondary to attitude and style.

It’s a testament to the show, then, that during the first episode of the second season, Dunham doesn’t let Williams get away with her real-life weight loss — she looks very Hollywood now — without comment. In a scene between Williams’s Marnie and her mother (played by Rita Wilson), her mother tells her that she looks “30 years old.” “I miss the softness in your face,” she tells her. “All you girls think that you look really good, but you just look like floats in the Macy’s parade — these big heads on these tiny bodies.” And over the next few episodes, Marnie’s problems only seem to get worse as she starts to rely more on her looks than her smarts to make a living.

I'm dieting atm and my biggest weakness is breakfast. Idk why I treat as a morning dessert, lol. I need to pick up some healthier cereals or something bc I'm lazy as fuck
leviicorpus 16th-Jan-2013 01:00 am (UTC)
OATMEAL

Specifically, steel cut oats with strawberries, banana, almonds, a bit a maple syrup and milk.
warsawed 16th-Jan-2013 01:00 am (UTC)
Would it be easy to prepare in an office? I don't have time to eat before I leave :(
lillylilacs 16th-Jan-2013 01:01 am (UTC)
ia! I love pb in my oatmeal too

my friend got a nutribullet and she's been making some tasty sounding smoothies for breakfast
tobesurrounded 16th-Jan-2013 01:14 am (UTC)
smoothies made from low fat milk & berries, and whole-wheat bread sandwiches. healthy & keeps you full past lunchtime.
laurie_springs 16th-Jan-2013 01:21 am (UTC)
DEAD @ morning dessert.

That's actually how I lose weight. Eat all my horrid calories early so I burn them off.

I second the suggestion of oatmeal though. I know they say you can't spot reduce for tummies but I swear that shit does.
handsdowntoo 16th-Jan-2013 01:37 am (UTC)
I suggest yogurt with kashi cereal in it. My Mom is really healthy and she does this. Good start for the day and it tastes really good (at least the berry kashi).
hello_samm 16th-Jan-2013 01:43 am (UTC)
Well at least you can burn it off throughout the day.
hpxstac Some Suggestions16th-Jan-2013 01:56 am (UTC)
Kashi cereals are pretty good, I was hot on those for awhile. Also, Quaker Oatmeal Squares are delicious. My current breakfast is a fistful of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal, greek yogurt, and some cut-up strawberries and blackberries. I mix them all together to make a haphazard (yet extremely delicious!) parfait.
nemo_011 16th-Jan-2013 03:14 am (UTC)
I swear my ultimate weakness is kellogs crunchy nut clusters

jadehunter 16th-Jan-2013 04:10 am (UTC)
I do a mix of different cereals for my breakfast bowl. A bunch of those grape nuts (Idk why they're called that), a lot of the shredded wheaties (plain, no sugar), with just a little bit of Honey Nut Cheerios for flavoring. Overall super healthy with lots of fiber, while also slightly sweet so that I can choke it down.

cringinglove 16th-Jan-2013 05:12 pm (UTC)
I'm having the same issue right now - my problem used to be late night snacking and recently it shifted into wanting to eat the entire kitchen when I wake up (which tbh is at least a little better, cause you're burning calories throughout the day rather than just sleeping on them, but still). I try to keep hard boiled eggs in the fridge cause it's quick/easy/protein etc.. that plus some greek yogurt or a few slices of deli meat and I feel way better than if I had a bunch of starch/sugar

All that said, I ended up having popcorn for breakfast this morning, so...
swampwalkers 17th-Jan-2013 06:41 am (UTC)
0% fat greek yogurt with blueberries and strawbs.....mmmmm omg.
try to keep your complex carb consumption to later in the day b/c it can make you crash. tbh, most cereals are full of sugar and preservatives and empty calories. i would not recommend them for weight loss.
stoicana 16th-Jan-2013 12:59 am (UTC)
Of all the fucking BAD things that people can focus on regarding 'Girls' the fact that weight (of Lena Dunham and her costars) is the thing that people go on and on about the most is SO FUCKING AGGRAVATING AND INFURIATING.
leviicorpus 16th-Jan-2013 12:59 am (UTC)
Also I am really giving Tina Fey the side-eye for her Bossy Pants quote. Shut the fuck up and go back to imitating Sarah Palin.
laurie_springs 16th-Jan-2013 01:23 am (UTC)
She's such a passive aggressive mean girl.
kristinkat 16th-Jan-2013 02:44 am (UTC)
everyone i know IRL raved about bossypants but i didn't find it endearing at all
somefantastic 16th-Jan-2013 03:51 am (UTC)
I love love LOVED Tina Fey until I read Bossypants. There were so many things that I found troubling, but the part where she wrote responses to internet critics and called one guy's mother a prostitute was the worst to me. Because you know what? Women have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. That just makes it okay for guys to call us sluts and whores.
actxappalledx 16th-Jan-2013 05:04 am (UTC)

palmthejoker 16th-Jan-2013 12:59 am (UTC)
I think Alison Williams lost the weight so she can fit into sample sizes. There's an article somewhere on how her ~team~ is literally grooming her image to be one that will get her on A-List fashion radars.
warsawed 16th-Jan-2013 01:02 am (UTC)
I don't mind her as much as Lena (actually I don't mind the other two either) but she seems kinda desperate
palmthejoker 16th-Jan-2013 01:06 am (UTC)
IA. Allison seems like she really wants the recognition, which is cool, you do you girl. I think she's going about it the right way even if I think she didn't need to lose the weight.
bellwetherr 16th-Jan-2013 01:22 am (UTC)
She is. She goes to every event ever.
ellyrianna 16th-Jan-2013 01:05 am (UTC)
lol that's funny given all the shit she's worn since girls premiered has been ugly. she has terrible taste.

or maybe the ugly things were the result of her being not sample-sized, i.e. she was only given crap/limited selection, so she's slimming down in order to be the right size for the fashionable dresses.
deltabean 16th-Jan-2013 01:06 am (UTC)
I believe that
laurie_springs 16th-Jan-2013 01:24 am (UTC)

holyfrijoles_2 16th-Jan-2013 01:49 am (UTC)
Lol I read that article. I would be so pissed if I was her and my stylist gave an interview like that. It makes her come off as desperate.
laurshel 16th-Jan-2013 01:58 am (UTC)

fabouluz 16th-Jan-2013 01:03 am (UTC)
Allison Williams does look like a bobble head.
fakevoices 16th-Jan-2013 01:03 am (UTC)
that is sad cause alison had a pretty figure before.
it is sad people in the entertainment industry try to sell and force this image that supper skinny is all there is.

i don't see her being a major actress, she's go the route of the girl who use to date skasgard who i can't remember her name for the life of me, she'll go to events and you will constantly question why she is there
h0tfuss 16th-Jan-2013 01:10 am (UTC)
Everyone on Girls will have 15-minute one-off scenes in random Apatow movies whenever they want for the rest of their lives.
holyfrijoles_2 16th-Jan-2013 01:48 am (UTC)
Lmao, you're thinking of Kate Bostworth.
hello_samm 16th-Jan-2013 02:08 am (UTC)
Kate Bosworth. I think she is so gorgeous and I love Blue Crush but yeah...what do she do now?

She's the face of SKII. I think.

Not Skarsgard, which is pretty rough for her.

Since the article quotes Tina...was anyone else taken aback by her tiny waist in the green sparkly dress at the Globes? I didn't think she was that thin
lovepollution 16th-Jan-2013 01:05 am (UTC)
When I saw her on the red carpet I thought it looked like she'd lost weight. She used to be way more "normal girl" sized.
brokenseas 16th-Jan-2013 01:10 am (UTC)
Yeah I mean she's been thin for awhile now, but I think she wears unflattering things sometimes. She looked good though--not unhealthy or anything.
ladysherlock 16th-Jan-2013 01:32 am (UTC)
I think she just carries more weight in her thighs/hips. I noticed she has a very hour glass shape.
deltabean 16th-Jan-2013 01:09 am (UTC)
I bet she was on a diet for the Globes
tragickingdomxo 16th-Jan-2013 01:15 am (UTC)
She looked good, but at the same time I do wonder if she's feeling the pressure to slim down post-30 Rock if she's going back into films
laurie_springs 16th-Jan-2013 01:24 am (UTC)
She's been feeling the fuck out of herself ever since she changed her hair. Not surprised.
rockyspine 16th-Jan-2013 01:47 am (UTC)
yeah all of her red carpet looks really cut her shape to an hourglass, but you can totally tell its like a "suckin it in" corset/spanks thing, that dress looked really stiff in the midsection (though it was also super gorg). her hips were/are still pretty not-"thin" (wtf am i trying to say) and in candids you can tell she really isn't that skinny. she looked killer though
ilouboutin 16th-Jan-2013 02:20 am (UTC)
i didn't notice a difference. she's always had a smaller waist with bigger hips.
alchimie_amour 16th-Jan-2013 03:44 am (UTC)
she's naturally hourglass though, don't let the big hips/thighs fool you she's got a tiny waist
moustacherider 16th-Jan-2013 01:04 am (UTC)
jumping on the discussion of weight loss

I lost weight last year to try and help with PCOS and I guess it was good to have people say 'wow you look so good/you've lost weight!' but also it felt like a backhanded compliment because I'd always think 'well I guess you thought I looked shit beforehand then'.

People should be congratulating others on trying to get fit and eat healthier and that doesn't always equate to thin people. Especially when I've read stories on ontd of people being complimented on losing weight when they've been severely sick, etc.
alexander2808 16th-Jan-2013 01:13 am (UTC)
u need to watch this

when people compliment you just say thank you!

i lost weight in college and got super thin. i felt fine but my sorority sisters literally thought i was on drugs and my family told me i looked sick. i ended up gaining back 15 lbs and now i feel like shit. its a horrible society we live in.
sunshineandlace 16th-Jan-2013 02:35 am (UTC)
Hey bb, congrats on your lifestyle change! Has it helped your PCOS? I was diagnosed with PCOS at age 19/20 (don't really know if it was legit PCOS tbh, doctors just couldn't figure out why my period wasn't showing up for 3-9 months). I'm 27 now and after I dropped my first 15 lbs., my cycles became really regular. First time in my life that's happened.

I agree with what you said - people should be congratulated on being healthier in general, not just because they're "thin."

I totally believe that someone like Marnie would deal with a breakup, losing her job, and feeling distant from her bff by obsessively counting calories. I don't like the dig at Krysten Ritter. Her show isn't supposed to be realistic, and they're clear about the fact that Chloe does a lot of drugs and doesn't eat. I've actually noticed that Dreama is a bit fuller than most super-short actresses.
deltabean 16th-Jan-2013 01:12 am (UTC)
And Krysten has always been that thin, hasn't she?

Dreama looks fantastic, imo
tragickingdomxo 16th-Jan-2013 01:17 am (UTC)
Krysten is tiny, but it looks pretty natural. Her face still has a softness to it, I think it's just she has a very small frame for her height.
h0tfuss 16th-Jan-2013 01:29 am (UTC)
Dreama is the cutest. She filled out those pilates pants really well in the Sunday episode. And yeah, Krysten has always been tall and thin. She has a killer hourglass shape for being so slender, which makes me think she naturally looks that way.
