Conspiracy Theories About Classic Literary Characters

Nick Carraway is Gay.

The aforementioned Greg Olear convinced us on two points — first, the way Carraway describes female characters as opposed to male characters (the latter with much more passion and attention to physicality than the former), and second, that scene with Mr. McKee, which, now that we re-read it, can only be a hook-up. What’s interesting to us about this revelation is this: if the Gatsby we know has been being viewed this whole time by someone who is head over  heels in love with him, we need to go back and reevaluate.

I like how 3/5 is just "GAY". Shipping and homosexuality are conspiracies now?
bodyline 15th-Jan-2013 08:00 pm (UTC)
Inorite? I'm surprised they didn't include Grantaire and Basil Hallward on there.
la_petite_singe 15th-Jan-2013 08:06 pm (UTC)
Heh, one of my friends has been shipping Enjolras/Grantaire since she was, like, eight, so she was thrilled that they had a few moments in the movie together.
la_petite_singe 15th-Jan-2013 07:59 pm (UTC)
I don't know about Nick, but Jordan is so totally a lesbian, lbr.
generalstolas 15th-Jan-2013 08:06 pm (UTC)
My mom said the same thing the other day, and I was completely confused.
arisingphoenix 15th-Jan-2013 08:18 pm (UTC)
Which to me makes her and Nicks "relationship" all the more interesting and totally believable that Fitzgerald would write about essentially "bearding" since neither Nick or Jordan would really want to be out.

blackkdiamond 15th-Jan-2013 08:45 pm (UTC)
My literature professor dedicated a whole class to talking about how Nick and Jordan were gay, and helping each other stay in the closet. Jordan having a masculine name and profession could be a hint towards her lesbianism.
jennyfinnly 15th-Jan-2013 07:59 pm (UTC)
can't read the harry potter one because i'm barely on book 3, but i agree with all of these

beaucadeau 15th-Jan-2013 07:59 pm (UTC)
The whole Holden is gay theory made Catcher in the Rye slightly bearable for me. Other wise it sucked.
warsawed 15th-Jan-2013 07:59 pm (UTC)
anyone remember the "Ron is actually Dumbledore due to time travel" theory? That was pretty popular after the sixth book

deltabean 15th-Jan-2013 08:09 pm (UTC)
Interesting.
sandstorm 15th-Jan-2013 08:11 pm (UTC)
LOL That's actually pretty amusing. I'd read a fanfic on the theory.
inboots 15th-Jan-2013 08:19 pm (UTC)
there were so many theories about ron becoming this mega important mastermind player in later books, for good or evil, because omg CHESS. KING!!!1

to this day, i love that none of them materialized.
milkradio 15th-Jan-2013 08:32 pm (UTC)
lol omg I loved this theory because it was so crazy.

I thought the Nick Carraway thing was a common theory? I think we even discussed it in HS English.
bodyline 15th-Jan-2013 08:02 pm (UTC)
My HS English class had several in-depth conversations about how Hamlet and Horatio were gay.
x_butterfly19_x 15th-Jan-2013 08:11 pm (UTC)
ohh Hamlet? Never heard that one before
kwikimart 15th-Jan-2013 08:15 pm (UTC)
Hamlet was totes gay

seishin 16th-Jan-2013 02:23 am (UTC)
Hamlet and Horatio, Rosencrantz & Guildernstern. ;) I'm convinced Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildernstern were all involved with eachother.

In my HS class (eons ago, lol), I played Horatio the scene where Hamlet dies, and I played it like Horatio was losing his love.

*went to an all girl school
lickety_split 15th-Jan-2013 08:00 pm (UTC)
I fucking love shit like this no matter how nonsensical the theory actually is.
lickety_split 15th-Jan-2013 08:03 pm (UTC)
Also, almost all Harry Potter fan theories are more interesting than canon.
hobnailedboots 15th-Jan-2013 08:05 pm (UTC)
this is sadly true

oh, Deathly Hallows, why is it so hard for me to reread you? I literally read 1-6 and then stop
la_petite_singe 15th-Jan-2013 08:05 pm (UTC)
I remember someone suggested that Hermione was actually half white and half black (causing her curly, bushy hair) and I just loved that.

A mix of stuff I'm reading/have waiting: Wolf Hall, Susannah Morrow, The Child Thief, The Memoirs of Cleopatra, Bloody Jack, Mists of Avalon,

I would highly recommend: The Aviary, Lamb, Gone Girl, Matilda (just reread; the abuse in RD's books are kind of horrifying to read as an adult and kind of put new perspective on it idk), An Inconvenient Wife, and The Twin's Daughter.
oxbowlake Re: oblig. what are you reading now?15th-Jan-2013 08:30 pm (UTC)

I absolutely adore it, I'm tearing through it.

I was reading The Dog Stars by author I can't remember but it's just not good at all so far...it's like a poorly written and paced version of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Which is a shame, as I was really looking forward to reading it and waited to get it for christmas.

that was a neat one

arisingphoenix 15th-Jan-2013 08:03 pm (UTC)
Ohh Gatsby conspiracy theories are my favorite. The best is that Gatsby is actually Black man.

Also the Nick is gay one isn't...that far off. I def think Nick has some bi sexuality going on.
leitao 15th-Jan-2013 08:45 pm (UTC)
Ha, just the other day, I was thinking how interesting it would be to cast a POC as Gatsby in a movie adaptation. Everything in that book would taken on a different meaning . . .
arisingphoenix 15th-Jan-2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
lol ever since high school I was the Gatsby fanatic. One of my college professors called me and had me read a paper a student wrote based on this theory that in fact Fitzgerald left hints that Gatsby was if not totally african american, at least half and had enough that the one drop rule would be in place, but that he was "passable" and that's how he moved up in the world. I read that paper looked at the kids research, articles he pulled from and ngl. It makes a ton of sense that Gatsby isn't totally white. Now every time I re read it I pick up on different stuff that COULD make that more true. I love the book but it would Def make it infinitely more interesting if it was even more of an observational piece about ones place.
la_petite_singe 15th-Jan-2013 08:03 pm (UTC)
Not quite classic literature, in this case, but I kinda love this:

maebytonight 15th-Jan-2013 08:18 pm (UTC)
This theory is interesting but why is someone analyzing comments made by a Robin Williams character? He's nonsensical in every form
la_petite_singe 15th-Jan-2013 08:19 pm (UTC)
Yeeeeeeah, it kinda falls apart when you remember that Robin Williams ad-libbed, like, EVERYTHING and they had something like nine hours of recordings of him just going off. But, still, I like it because it's fun.
kwikimart 15th-Jan-2013 08:18 pm (UTC)

la_petite_singe 15th-Jan-2013 09:14 pm (UTC)
ITA. I think Sherlock/John is slightly special because of Sherlock's ~jealousy with John's wife and all that stuff, plus his own eternal bachelorhood and all (because, y'know, at the time "bachelor" basically meant "gay"), plus the really sweet closeness and love of their friendship, but I still see your point.
