Boys call Ghana trip 'inspiring' and an 'eye opener'

Yesterday the interweb was abuzz with the rumour that One Direction had secretly flown to Africa as part of their involvment with Comic Relief.

Now the boys have confirmed that they have indeed spent the last few days in Ghana, calling the trip 'inspiring' and an 'eye-opener'.

"Having the most amazing few days of my life !" wrote Liam yesterday - and you know the Paynis is being serious when he doesn't add a single extraaaa letter to any of his words.

"Today was the most amazing day I've had so far.. In my life ever," agreed Harry, before adding today: "@rednoseday Thank you so much for having us. It was amazing and we'll see you soon .xx"

1D are said to have visited some of the people helped by Comic Relief funds, as well as filming segments to accompany the video for their official Red Nose Day single - a cover of Blondie's One Way or Another.

The boys will be seen meeting poverty stricken families in a segment due to air as part of the Red Nose Day broadcast on March 15.

Niall certainly seems to have been affected by what he's seen over the past few days - he sent a PLETHORA of tweets earlier this morning regarding 1D's trip.

"Just arrived back from Accra,Ghana! Best life experience ever! This @rednoseday please get involved!!" he wrote.

"Watch comic relief this @rednoseday, you are in for a shock and eye opener ! and fun too"

He added: "I've seen the slums right in front of me! This is no joke! They really need your help! Poverty is real !"

Thats! a! lot! of! exclamation! marks! there! Nialler! but still, an important message.

What do you think - will you be tuning in to watch the boys in Africa on March 15?

OMG, bless 1D's white savior light. Except for Zayn, who as we all know got lost "in between those african kids." ETA: link was deleted, so have a screencap instead (ty, piratesswoop):

It's hardly comparable though.
givemethepeasx 15th-Jan-2013 07:24 pm (UTC)
um where are the slums in ireland? even the poorest housing conditions here are nothing in comparison to the slums in ghana.
piratesswoop 15th-Jan-2013 07:36 pm (UTC)
that was some slight hyperbole but its not like every single person in ireland or the uk or western europe live a decent middle class life.

mostly i'm just annoyed by the trope that these people seem to have that poverty only exists in the giant conglomerate land of africa and no where else and oh wow my eyes have really been opened but i'm not really going to do anything else about it after my life changing trip

what if his eyes were opened to poverty everywhere by this trip? not just in Ghana?

whaaat...? I thought I'd seen all of ^ set of interviews, but I don't recall that comment of Liam's - what's that all about? o_O
cageyb 15th-Jan-2013 08:14 pm (UTC)
Lol this was his response to being asked about Syria. His look totally read "what? I'm in a boyband, what even is this question?"

I wonder what he tweeted about it?
lfitzb 15th-Jan-2013 08:44 pm (UTC)
Well actually. He probably has never seen a slum or anything below middle class since, you know, he was born during the Celtic Tiger economy in Ireland? Probably never got a chance to travel very much outside of Ireland/UK...He's 19 and probably never did a mission trip?

I don't know, I don't fault him for his enthusiasm or his recent realizations.
ohryouchipi 15th-Jan-2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
As long as realize it now, and try to do something about it, right?
amsterdam__ 16th-Jan-2013 06:49 pm (UTC)
Oh c'mon, that's like saying, don't fault him for never picking up a book/newspaper/watching tv, you don't have to know everything about poverty ever and still know that poverty exists. Just because you haven't seen a slum, doesn't mean you think they belong in fairy tales or slumdog millionaire...

As far as I've seen it, slums in a developed country are nothing like slums in developing and poor countries. So while I do rme at his statement, maybe for him it's noticeable because he's "used" to the level of poverty in his country/region, and not the level of poverty in a developing country like Ghana, let alone in an LDC.
