Jessica Simpson to Star in Semi-Autobiographical NBC Comedy

The singer-actress is reteaming with Fashion Star producer Electus and NBC for an untitled scripted comedy based on her life, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Universal Television and Electus will co-produce the pilot presentation based on a pitch developed by Robin and Nick Bakay that's inspired by Simpson's colorful life. Nick Bakay, whose credits include Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Zookeeper and 'Til Death, will pen the script and executive produce alongside Electus' Ben Silverman and Simpson's father/manager, Joe Simpson. Electus' Jimmy Fox will co-exec produce.

"We are thrilled to team up with the multitalented Jessica Simpson to bring this new sitcom to life on NBC as she is truly a modern-day Lucy with incredible comedic chops," Electus founder and chairman Ben Silverman said. "From running a fashion empire to wrangling her public image as a new mom, we see Jessica's character approach a variety of 'everyday' circumstances that will get audiences laughing out loud."

Added Simpson: "I am so excited to work with Ben and NBC again, this time on a scripted comedy. I often find myself thinking that no one could ever make up the things that actually happen in my life -- so between the real-life elements and a great team of writers, I think we'll have people laughing!"

Simpson's life have largely been spent in the public eye, auditioning (unsuccessfully) for The Mickey Mouse Club at age 12 and later signed with Tommy Mottola and Columbia Records at 16. At 19, her first studio album reached No. 25 on the Billboard charts where the label helped market the singer using her "virgin" appeal with Simpson publicly stating that she would remain abstinent until marriage.

The singer's former marriage to former 98 Degrees frontman Nick Lachey was documented in MTV's Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which ran for three seasons on the network. Since then, she's released a handful of albums and appeared on several TV specials and in 2010 landed Jessica Simpson's The Price of Beauty and in 2012 became one of the mentors on NBC/Electus' Fashion Star.

NBC's semi-autobiographical entry marks Simpson's second attempt at scripted comedy. In 2004, ABC attempted a similar venture, which would have starred the singer-actress as a pop star-turned-TV news anchor called Jessica. ABC ordered the comedy to pilot but it ultimately didn't make the cut to series.

Simpson's vehicle marks the latest semi-autobiographical project set up this development season. Thus far, semi-autobiographical entries from Adam F. Goldberg, Jim Gaffigan, and Joe Port/Joe Wiseman have already landed pilot orders at ABC, CBS and NBC, respectively.

For Electus, the project marks the latest high-profile project. The Silverman-fronted producer also has Bear Grylls' NBC summer unscripted series Get Out Alive, TNT's unscripted Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson entry The Hero and CMT's new Dog the Bounty Hunter installment, among others. The second season of its Fashion Star, with mentors/fashion designers Simpson, Nicole Richie and designer John Varvatos, premieres March 8.

Simpson's acting credits include features Employee of the Month, The Dukes of Hazzard and small-screen appearances on Entourage and That '70s Show.

Weight Watchers spokeswoman Simpson, who is expecting her second child with fiancé Eric Johnson, is repped by her father, Joe Simpson, and law firm Myman Abel. Nick Bakay, whose credits also include The King of Queens and a leading voice role in Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, is with APA, CESD and Morris Yorn.

They can only wish she would have an ounce of talent such as Lucy being an actress, entertainer and a very smart woman ahead of her time! Jessica Simpson should not even be in the same sentence as the pioneer and Legendary Lucille Ball. smh!!!!!!

Welp, NBC Thursday nights, it's been a good run. But this is like the 4th horseman of the NBC comedy apocalypse. (The others were delaying Community, turning Up All Night into a sitcom, and Whitney. And, well, I guess 1600 Penn. So this is maybe more the 5th horseman.)
simplychristina 15th-Jan-2013 07:32 pm (UTC)
Nick Bakay?

I guess that's what you do after you voice Salem.

that so noTORIous show made me like tori spelling for about 5 minutes because it showed she was comfortable with poking fun at herself and was funny too. idk about this tho, especially if the guy has "paul blart" under his belt. barf.

So we should except second-hand embarrassment and absolutely no comedy.

She should find herself better writers, producers, and management, and then go back to singing. 'Cause her voice is decent.

"...she is truly a modern-day Lucy with incredible comedic chops"

I really hope he's talking about like, Lucy from "Peanuts" or something and not actually comparing her to Lucille Ball...
rareouldtimes 15th-Jan-2013 09:59 pm (UTC)
comparing her to lucy from peanuts is just as offensive
darkwarrior 15th-Jan-2013 08:47 pm (UTC)
Cancelled before it makes it to air. People just aren't that interested in her.
heart_of_butter 16th-Jan-2013 08:22 am (UTC)
Seriously, she's so irrelevant I'm not surprised she isn't a judge on a reality TV singing competition. People buy her shoe line and that is it.
michelleantonia 16th-Jan-2013 10:29 am (UTC)
that's called not being picked up. But I LOLed

NBC continues to scrap the bottom of the barrel. In a years time, they'll have alienated every single one of their dedicated comedy viewers.
