Rape Could Happen to Me in India: Freida Pinto

In an Interview to CNN's Erin Burnett,Freida Pinto talks about Growing Number of Rape Cases in India

Last week when asked about this Incident Top Chef host Padma lakshmi said that ,"I was saddened and I was sickened. I literally felt nauseous. I'm from India and while it (the attack) didn't surprise me, it disgusted me... And it reminded me, it brought back to me all of those feelings of when I was walking in Delhi. "

"I used to ride the bus in India to school and I hated it. I hated going on a crowded bus because they would always pinch you or grab you and, you know, when you're a teenager... I went to school (for) some years in India and it was terrible...

"There is no actual word for rape. The closest word [in Hindi, India's predominant language] is I guess lootna, which kind of means to take someone's honour away. But to say that because a woman has been violated she no longer has her chastity or her honour is missing the point. Therein lies the problem."

Yup. It's sad that men being sexually assaulted is ignored, laughed off and dismissed. Granted, sexual crimes against men don't happen as often as crimes against women, but it is still a problem.

Hell even on here, we seem to not take a man being assaulted seriously. I remember a post about a model that had been harassed and a good chunk of the comments were "Damn, he's hot, I'd rape him too," or "he's lying because men don't get erections without being turned on." That post was a while ago, and I'm slowly seeing a change in thinking, but it's baby steps.

that post wasn't that long ago, actually. i remember it and i was shocked reading it because the vast majority of comments were like that or agreeing.

i know it's so under reported (more so than sexual assault against women?), so any statistics are hard to know for sure, but i wonder if sexual abuse against men is more often by women or by other men.

My gut wants to say that it's man on man violence. But like you said, since it's underreported and has such a stigma, we'd probably never have accurate statistics.

And wasn't there a post recently about one of the extras in the Magic Mike movie trying to stick her finger up Matthew McConaughey butt or something like that? I remember it took almost an entire page of "OMG LOLOLOL" until someone pointed out that it was really assault-y.
mynamehere07 15th-Jan-2013 02:49 pm (UTC)
I remember reading that.
