Rising gay icon and Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham waiting for gay marriage legalization

She's unlucky in love on her hit HBO show, "Girls," but Lena Dunham is pure joy offset. The 24-year-old star and creator of the critically lauded show referred to her boyfriend Jack Antonoff as her "family" Sunday night while accepting the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. The comment caused some to speculate that the pair had recently gotten engaged.

Not so: Dunham clarified those remarks backstage at the Golden Globes, saying: "I am not engaged. I don't want to get married until all gay people can get married." Dunham follows celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, who have said similar things in the past. source

spoiler alert: gay people don't care if you get married. the gov isn't going to magically legalize gay marriage because celebrities are boycotting the institution. either make an actual effort to change the status quo or don't act like you're ~sharing the struggle~, it's gross.

I read a few articles of commentary on how the SC will be reviewing critical cases having to do with same-sex marriage. The authors speculated that perhaps the SC may avoid ruling anything in favor of gays so as to not push the US beyond what the ~people are prepared for. Roe v Wade was very ahead of its time, for example, so the authors feared we'd have another repeat of that ruling. The SC keeps a close eye on what the public is doing and saying in regards to these hot issues.

So, on one hand, good for Lena on giving the SC another reason to consider that it's time to start working on legalizing gay marriage. I see no other reason to see her declaration as positive, if not only to influence the politicians who are on the lookout for trends in public thought.

That's kind of depressing about SCOTUS, especially considering that they have the final federal say with anything that reaches them.

Whenever people say things like this it just comes off as so smug and obnoxious

makes me think of the smug alert episode of south park, which derived from hollywood smugness anyway -

LOL I loved that episode. I bet they also like the smell of their own farts too. I mean do lawmakers against gay marriage even care that straight people aren't getting married because of the law. I don't think they profit off of any sort of marriage tbh.

i feel like they picked her name out of a hat or something. such a slap in the face. i would've taken a "modern family" win over "girls".

LOL! the good old "I'll wait for gay people or until I just decide I really want to get married or can claim it's for the kids."

Don't say it unless you mean it, straight people. But even so, you not getting married isn't going to change anything. There are more productive ways to advocate for marriage equality.

i hate it when someone declares themselves a 'gay icon' or someone else just gives them that title (i realise she didn't actually say this) because a) being in favour of lgbt rights doesn't make you an icon, it makes you a decent human being, b) wtf is a 'gay icon', we're a diverse group of people with different interests c) they are usually straight women and sometimes it comes across as fetishising ~"oh, all the gays love me" type of thing/pandering to lgbt people for sales etc, especially when the person in question hasn't done anything for the advancement of lgbt equality other than say they support gay rights and d) you don't tell us who we admire, we tell you. i don't see why i should support someone/think of them as a 'gay icon', just because they are for equal rights
