Rising gay icon and Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham waiting for gay marriage legalization

She's unlucky in love on her hit HBO show, "Girls," but Lena Dunham is pure joy offset. The 24-year-old star and creator of the critically lauded show referred to her boyfriend Jack Antonoff as her "family" Sunday night while accepting the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. The comment caused some to speculate that the pair had recently gotten engaged.

Not so: Dunham clarified those remarks backstage at the Golden Globes, saying: "I am not engaged. I don't want to get married until all gay people can get married." Dunham follows celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, who have said similar things in the past. source

Rising gay icon Lena Dunham
invisible_cunt 14th-Jan-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
just watched the season 2 premiere of girls
only watching it for shoshanna now
lena was unbearable. also, the whole thing with donald is awkward as fuck. out of nowhere and totally not genuine. also, i loved how she put a token black girl in the party scene.

shoshanna is everything though. i grew up surrounded by shoshannas and went to school with dozens of them
jinnycalderone 14th-Jan-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
im like a shoshanna too tbh.

Edited at 2013-01-14 09:22 pm (UTC)
soho 14th-Jan-2013 10:25 pm (UTC)
I keep saying that the show would be SO GOOD without her character. Shoshanna needs more screen time and there needs to be a serious cut back on Lena's character and her disturbing, boring love life.
riookierin 14th-Jan-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
Idk much about this Lena Derpham, but I am already so fucking sick of hearing about her.
coffeenmorphine 14th-Jan-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
What I wanna know is why shoe wore heels and an ill-fitting dress when she couldn't walk in either?
jinnycalderone 14th-Jan-2013 09:07 pm (UTC)
IA. N A G L!!!
goldengal1193 14th-Jan-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
This post is killing me.
jinnycalderone 14th-Jan-2013 09:07 pm (UTC)
me too
holyfrijoles_2 14th-Jan-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
Does the A in LGBTQA really stand for Ally? Because I thought it was for Asexual. And if it does mean Ally that is the stupidest shit I have heard in a long time.
britneyspears 14th-Jan-2013 09:00 pm (UTC)
i've seen it used for both and i think using it for ally is stupid as hale
supermishelle 14th-Jan-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
I thought the A stood for Asexuals and Allies because they don't want to add anymore letters?
filmfreakfranco 14th-Jan-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
Yes it does!
jinnycalderone 14th-Jan-2013 09:07 pm (UTC)
yeah, i thought so too. it betta not.
joliebelle 14th-Jan-2013 09:08 pm (UTC)
I've only known it to stand for Asexual
jaimelannister 14th-Jan-2013 09:10 pm (UTC)
I've heard both and IA, if it's Ally = WTF
agentnever 14th-Jan-2013 09:12 pm (UTC)
In all of the top searches that come up when I Google it, they all say "ally/allies".
ex_vampirew765 14th-Jan-2013 09:30 pm (UTC)
it's supposed to be for asexual

but of course them heterosexuals gotta put themselves where they don't belong
nebulous_mirage 14th-Jan-2013 09:53 pm (UTC)
it stands for Asexual. Since when the hell had allies had anything to do with it?
the_nerrieds 14th-Jan-2013 10:17 pm (UTC)
They should just change the acronym to DNE: Damn Near Everybody. But seriously though, allies do not need a letter.
vonlisbon 14th-Jan-2013 11:55 pm (UTC)
The majority want to change something because they feel helplessly excluded and underrepresented and you're... surprised?
egalitarianmuse 15th-Jan-2013 03:55 am (UTC)
I've known is to stand for asexual or agender depending on what contingent of the community is discussing it.
supermishelle 14th-Jan-2013 08:59 pm (UTC)
I don't really get what straight people not getting married accomplishes? They still have the right to do it even if they chose not to. I feel like they're missing the point when they say stuff like that.
tiddlywinks103 14th-Jan-2013 09:44 pm (UTC)
They are.
la_petite_singe 14th-Jan-2013 09:00 pm (UTC)
They haven't been going out that long, have they?? Or do I just not pay attention? Probably that.
spartacus 14th-Jan-2013 09:00 pm (UTC)
excuses to say you're not willing to get married yet tbh
pastelstar 14th-Jan-2013 09:15 pm (UTC)

bashing her looks while it not being relevant to the post, HMMMMM
crystalzelda 14th-Jan-2013 09:04 pm (UTC)
My askbox was insane last night on tumblr after I went in on her

lol idegaf she deserves all the criticism she gets on her show wrt race and more. How sad that she and her ilk are the faces or feminism these days or w/e, like we're supposed to root for her because of the ~sistahhood~ or something bye
jinnycalderone 14th-Jan-2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
thank you, ita.

Can I derail this post to the discuss the recent wave of fetishization of overt (mostly white male based) homosexuality in the media? Because I hate it. A LOT.

supermishelle 14th-Jan-2013 09:07 pm (UTC)
Let it out bb
itscomicrelief 14th-Jan-2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
I was talking to my friend about how much I'd like to see a ~normal~ non-white gay character anywhere whose problems don't have anything to do with his being gay.
jaimelannister 14th-Jan-2013 09:12 pm (UTC)
Max on Happy Endings? (I know he's white, but unfortunately I can't think of anyone else :()
tessselate 14th-Jan-2013 09:14 pm (UTC)
oscar on the office comes to mind
laizuki 14th-Jan-2013 09:16 pm (UTC)
Max from Happy Endings is a decent example, although he's still white. I love that show & I appreciate his characterisation a lot.
hpxstac 14th-Jan-2013 10:21 pm (UTC)
I haven't come across any on TV. I thought about Patrick in The Family Stone. His character didn't have as much development as I would have like to have seen though.
zharia 14th-Jan-2013 11:37 pm (UTC)
GREEK.

GAY BLACK DUDE IN A FRAT.
HE IS HOT AND AWeSOME.

it's all on Netflix. WATCH IT. srsly tho. Half the cast is PoCs and they are all more attractive than the whiteys.
adam_pally 14th-Jan-2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
Recent tho? That shot has been going on for awhile now.
alaynestone 14th-Jan-2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
That's basically tumblr in a nutshell.

But please, rant away!
sandvich 14th-Jan-2013 09:10 pm (UTC)
Please do.
rimbaudacious 14th-Jan-2013 09:11 pm (UTC)
bscly why Tumblr and I will never roll tbh.
harlem_nocturne 14th-Jan-2013 09:13 pm (UTC)
But I guess my rant in short is that as a gay POC, I don't like that the mainstream media thinks of me as either some frilly white bitchy queen, or some ridiculous fat man who wears high heels and makeup to Kroger. (JSYK, I live in Atlanta, and it ain't like that.)

I also feel like women like Lena Dunham think of all gay men as this one monolithic idea and run with that, and anything outside of that is met with confusion and probably hostility. Then again, I think that about most white women in terms of gay men.
bellwetherr 14th-Jan-2013 09:14 pm (UTC)
thats the only acceptable gay in television and media. it's awful.
the_nerrieds 14th-Jan-2013 10:21 pm (UTC)
One of the reasons why I stayed away from Supernatural and am considering ditching Teen Wolf.
vonlisbon 14th-Jan-2013 11:55 pm (UTC)
It's called fanfiction bb
crystalzelda 14th-Jan-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
I also want to thank Lena Dunham for her shout out to all the girls in the world that ever felt there wasn't a space for them

It really was so poignant and genuine coming from Lena Dunham, who only made space on her show for rich college educated brunette women, just so touching and authentic u kno
jinnycalderone 14th-Jan-2013 09:10 pm (UTC)
lololol
bellwetherr 14th-Jan-2013 09:14 pm (UTC)

mynamehere07 14th-Jan-2013 09:15 pm (UTC)

pastelstar 14th-Jan-2013 09:17 pm (UTC)
the first part? yeah.
crystalzelda 14th-Jan-2013 09:18 pm (UTC)
She also tearfully dedicated the award to “every woman who felt like there wasn’t a space for her.”

like she's so fucking thick she doesn't even realize the absolute hypocrisy of that statement, like how sheltered? This summer child rn
pastelstar 14th-Jan-2013 09:17 pm (UTC)
lawl
withoutyoursmil 14th-Jan-2013 09:29 pm (UTC)

jinnycalderone 14th-Jan-2013 09:11 pm (UTC)
