Back when Mariah was doing photo shoots for her debut album, some photographer said her left side was her bad side. And that's all it took.

There's an interview with Mariah from 1997 when she was on The Today Show. Her chair was on the right. So for most of the interveiw, she tried to keep her head turned so that the camera was getting her right side. Really awkward.

Me too! I never met someone that had a good opinion on it though. Most people don't tend to give it too much thought but I think it's probably one of the most soulful moments on butterfly.

wasn't there some old thing about tommy mottola giving her a complex about the left side of her face or something? there's something of that nature that was always stuck in my memory bank.

yeah. When she went in to take a picture for her debut the photographer said her left side was her bad side, and it stuck ever since.

So Mottola told all interviews she had/etc. to make her face the way so her left face wouldn't be shown. She nervously giggled about it in mid-90s interviews, but, you can definitely tell it stuck.
