Will Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame Swing to Broadway?

Quasimodo may get to ring his bells on Broadway as Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame is eyeing a Rialto run after all, according to The New York Post. Peter Parnell (The Cider House Rules) will pen a new book for the musical, which premiered in Berlin in 1999. The musical will also feature new songs from Oscar and Tony winner Alan Menken (who scored the 1996 animated film) and Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz. No word yet on casting, further creative team members or a potential production timeline.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame premiered in Berlin under the name Der Glöckner von Notre Dame and featured direction and an original book by Tony winner James Lapine, music by Menken and lyrics by Schwartz. The musical is a darker take on Disney’s 1996 film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel about Quasimodo, a deformed bellringer at the Notre Dame catherdral, and his unlikely relationship with the gypsy Esmeralda.

Check out the song “Out There” from the 1996 film starring Tom Hulce, Kevin Kline and Demi Moore below!

7 year old me was pretty confused by all the hair sniffing and hell references, and by the time I watched again when I was 15 I was like DAMN that movie is intense. And flawless.

gurl, you're gonna get all kinds of ~heavy references~ now, it's very Hell loaded lol And the little scene when Frollo talks to the torturer and you can hear the whips and the guy's screams in the background is like WUT. Pretty intense for Disney.

I need to do the same. I wasn't fond of this movie when I was a kid.
carumbola 11th-Jan-2013 06:47 pm (UTC)
Wait, what. What's the hair sniffing? I haven't seen this movie in ages.
brucelynn 11th-Jan-2013 06:50 pm (UTC)
Frollo was obsessed with Esmeralda , he was lusting like a mother fucker

When he grabs her in the church he sniffs her hair like there's no tomorrow. Also, there's this moment during Hellfire when he's pretty much ready to jerk off to the smell of her scarf

They play this on Disney Junior all the time. We may get Tarzan once a year but let's teach the children Hellfire!

ikr. I went to see it for my 7th bday party when it came out and my mom didn't bat an eye (prob bc she's Catholic and was okay with all the religious stuff and figured the other stuff went over my head) and I just watched it again last year and Christ on a bike. Great movie, but SO DARK.

lmao same, I didn't realize how dark it was until I got older.
