Will Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame Swing to Broadway?

Quasimodo may get to ring his bells on Broadway as Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame is eyeing a Rialto run after all, according to The New York Post. Peter Parnell (The Cider House Rules) will pen a new book for the musical, which premiered in Berlin in 1999. The musical will also feature new songs from Oscar and Tony winner Alan Menken (who scored the 1996 animated film) and Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz. No word yet on casting, further creative team members or a potential production timeline.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame premiered in Berlin under the name Der Glöckner von Notre Dame and featured direction and an original book by Tony winner James Lapine, music by Menken and lyrics by Schwartz. The musical is a darker take on Disney’s 1996 film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel about Quasimodo, a deformed bellringer at the Notre Dame catherdral, and his unlikely relationship with the gypsy Esmeralda.

The music in the movie is so flawless.

If they try to lighten the German version because it's too dark, it'll probably end up a disaster. At least it was when they tampered with Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires) for the Broadway version and ruined a perfect musical.

We do not speak of Dance of the Vampires

IT NEVER HAPPENED OKAY? IT WAS NEVER AN ENGLISH MUSICAL. EVER.

The Rebecca English Demo though was pretty fantastic. I'm pissed it's delayed

Delayed? More like dead in the water :/ At least that's my impression. It's a shame, I really like Rebecca (Rebeeeeccaaaaaaaaa). And you're right Dance of the Vampires must've been a bad dream I once had, it never happened NOPE!

... but, UWE WAS MAXIM. UGH. Should have gone to Thomas Borchert instead (on the demo).

Maike and Pia sound good, Uwe is just that odd one out.

The fact that it was so dark was the only thing that made me care about its existance. If it's just the movie on stage, whatever, but it fixed a lot of the problems that the movie had and most of the problems were about unnecessary levity

eswnrtm 11th-Jan-2013 07:13 pm (UTC)

i'd love one, but i have no idea how they're gonna do the avalanche scene

When I saw this movie for the first time as a kid I was confused why Esmeralda didn't end up with Quasimodo lol.

I love the music for the film. The songs are so powerful and daunting.

LOL me too. Us kids with pure, innocent hearts who actually thought the ugly dude would get the girl ;~~ When he saw Esmeralda and Pheebo kissing UGH. Poor Quasi ;(

I loved THoND when I was a kid. I played the shit out of the computer game too. It's one of those ~tend-to-be-forgotten~ movies, but it's one of their better ones, imo.
deadendqueen16 11th-Jan-2013 07:26 pm (UTC)
I love this movie.
wombat_nectar 11th-Jan-2013 07:36 pm (UTC)
i loved this sfm movie as a kid!

i think because i went to a catholic school it didn't even seem dark or scary. i was used to threats of hell lol

lol

Yesyesyes this could be amazing. HoND is my favorite Disney movie (along with Treasure Planet). The only thing is that I'd be worried that the actors wouldn't be able to do "Bells of Notre Dame" and "Hellfire" justice. Oh, and how they'd handle the gargoyles (if they kept them in at all).
snowweisz 11th-Jan-2013 07:40 pm (UTC)
Treasure Planet is underrated imo
malarkiness 11th-Jan-2013 09:42 pm (UTC)
It definitely is. I guess the setting is a little off-putting for some people?

YESSS DER GLOCKNER VON NOTRE DAME IS FLAWFREE!

This song is sad.

My favorite is 'Esmeralda' (trio), it's so good.
sadisticsidhe 11th-Jan-2013 09:00 pm (UTC)
That is another excellent one.
donttakethebait 11th-Jan-2013 07:50 pm (UTC)
idek how long i've been saying it needed to be put on broadway. probably as long as i've been saying they need to turn the aladdin musical at california adventure into a legit broadway one. I WOULD DIE.

i would watch the fuck outta that, tbh.
nemo_de_la_meer 11th-Jan-2013 08:56 pm (UTC)
Every. Damn. Time.

I wanted to post this but this is the SAME shit they've dropped in interviews with Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken. I'm willing to accept it may never happen and nothing will be better than the German production.
cedric_mcfly 11th-Jan-2013 09:05 pm (UTC)
Hope this happens.

HoND is my favourite Disney film by far, and i'm always pressed that Esmeralda seems to be forgotten when people are talking about their fave princesses, i know she's not included in the princess line but still the superior character!

(Lol i knew other people had a crush on Clopin, it couldn't just be me!)
sparkfactory 11th-Jan-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
i feel like disney is going to cycle through all their movies into musicals at one point or another.

i got the art of the hunchback of notre dame book at the library for $1. not super relevant to anything, i'm just v. proud of that
sandstorm 11th-Jan-2013 09:27 pm (UTC)
I'd actually really dig a Hercules musical, even if I don't really like the movie.
mingemonster 11th-Jan-2013 09:16 pm (UTC)
Oh I hope so. I liked the German musical, but good god it was the ugliest thing I have ever seen.
