Will Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame Swing to Broadway?

Quasimodo may get to ring his bells on Broadway as Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame is eyeing a Rialto run after all, according to The New York Post. Peter Parnell (The Cider House Rules) will pen a new book for the musical, which premiered in Berlin in 1999. The musical will also feature new songs from Oscar and Tony winner Alan Menken (who scored the 1996 animated film) and Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz. No word yet on casting, further creative team members or a potential production timeline.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame premiered in Berlin under the name Der Glöckner von Notre Dame and featured direction and an original book by Tony winner James Lapine, music by Menken and lyrics by Schwartz. The musical is a darker take on Disney’s 1996 film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel about Quasimodo, a deformed bellringer at the Notre Dame catherdral, and his unlikely relationship with the gypsy Esmeralda.

Check out the song “Out There” from the 1996 film starring Tom Hulce, Kevin Kline and Demi Moore below!

I knew Disney was dark but this was .... dark dark
ichdontthinksoo 11th-Jan-2013 06:40 pm (UTC)
7 year old me was pretty confused by all the hair sniffing and hell references, and by the time I watched again when I was 15 I was like DAMN that movie is intense. And flawless.
brucelynn 11th-Jan-2013 06:42 pm (UTC)
Lol I got kicked out of the room when they showed him sniffing her hair lol

my mom was like " OUT ! "
cluelessraf 11th-Jan-2013 06:44 pm (UTC)
I never re-watched in my grown up years, I think I should after this comment.
carumbola 11th-Jan-2013 06:47 pm (UTC)
Wait, what. What's the hair sniffing? I haven't seen this movie in ages.
sandstorm 11th-Jan-2013 06:49 pm (UTC)
They play this on Disney Junior all the time. We may get Tarzan once a year but let's teach the children Hellfire!
celtic_thistle 11th-Jan-2013 06:52 pm (UTC)
ikr. I went to see it for my 7th bday party when it came out and my mom didn't bat an eye (prob bc she's Catholic and was okay with all the religious stuff and figured the other stuff went over my head) and I just watched it again last year and Christ on a bike. Great movie, but SO DARK.
interpol15 11th-Jan-2013 07:09 pm (UTC)
I saw this movie in theaters with my Catholic priest uncle. Thank god a lot of the references went over my head, but my sisters must have been so uncomfortable.
milkradio 11th-Jan-2013 09:01 pm (UTC)
lol my mom hates this movie, not because of all the crazy able-ism, psycho religious types, or violence, but because it's "too sexual." Wtf, mom. Anyway, I actually like when Disney gets dark. It would have been perfect without the damn gargoyles, though I knowwwww why they're there, but ugh I always hated them and found them super annoying even as a kid.
muddyroad 12th-Jan-2013 12:18 am (UTC)
IKR. Were the censors all sleeping on the job, or...? (And yes, it's one of my fave Disney movies)
ljubavirakija 11th-Jan-2013 06:39 pm (UTC)
Even though its not a Disney production, I can’t wait for “Anastasia” on Broadway.

I was just thinking the other day how I would love to see Mulan on Broadway
brucelynn 11th-Jan-2013 06:42 pm (UTC)
I heard somewhere that Don Bluth said he wanted Disney to claim her

not sure if he was joking or not
snowweisz 11th-Jan-2013 06:59 pm (UTC)
lmao he wishes.
I hate Don Bluth he can smd that loser wannabe
/intense feelings, ik
nebulous_mirage 11th-Jan-2013 09:47 pm (UTC)
joke or not, i'm glad Anastasia doesn't belong to Disney, i'd rme so hard if she joined the disney princess franchise
theartistprince 11th-Jan-2013 06:46 pm (UTC)
The guy who played Enjolras in Les Mis: the Movie is going to be in that, right?

I certainly hope so

goofusgallant 11th-Jan-2013 07:06 pm (UTC)
I'm so excited for Anastasia.
redaodai 11th-Jan-2013 06:40 pm (UTC)
I still haven't seen the movie.
no_urges 11th-Jan-2013 06:40 pm (UTC)
hellfire is the best song from hunchback, tho. and one of the best villain songs ever tbh, next to poor unfortunate souls

blahblahcakes64 11th-Jan-2013 06:41 pm (UTC)
Bless you for posting this, bb.
andthenwevomit 11th-Jan-2013 06:46 pm (UTC)
the flame!Esmeralda, the robbed figures, the Latin chanting, everything was literally perfect
emmy0001 11th-Jan-2013 06:58 pm (UTC)
holy shit, i forgot how good this song is.
stuckmodebabe 11th-Jan-2013 07:02 pm (UTC)
This song is amazing and I would love to see it done justice if it ever came to Broadway.
goofusgallant 11th-Jan-2013 07:06 pm (UTC)
yesss
interpol15 11th-Jan-2013 07:11 pm (UTC)
So, so amazing. One of the best Disney songs ever, imo.

blahblahcakes64 11th-Jan-2013 06:41 pm (UTC)
YAAAAAAAAS.

I had an Esmeralda beach towel, and performed "God Help the Outcasts" at a drama camp I did in middle school. I was (am) obsessed.
skonka 11th-Jan-2013 06:50 pm (UTC)
That's, uhmmmm... middle school you say?
blahblahcakes64 11th-Jan-2013 07:08 pm (UTC)
Ah, that's grammatically misleading. I performed the song in middle school, but had the towel in elementary school.
celtic_thistle 11th-Jan-2013 06:54 pm (UTC)
omg I had the beach towel too. And that song is perfect.
goofusgallant 11th-Jan-2013 07:06 pm (UTC)
lol I had that beach towel too.
kellerton 11th-Jan-2013 07:12 pm (UTC)
here for the towel omg.
classic_mold137 11th-Jan-2013 07:36 pm (UTC)
I had that towel too.
sandstorm 11th-Jan-2013 06:41 pm (UTC)
PLEASE.

I would really like to see Disney movies on stage (Beauty and the Beast is coming here next month), but they better get someone who can belt out Hellfire.
ichdontthinksoo 11th-Jan-2013 06:55 pm (UTC)
Ikr? The actor playing Frollo can't be anything short of AMAZING.
paristomoscou 11th-Jan-2013 06:42 pm (UTC)
Menken's been working on re-adapting the German theater release forever (because it was too dark). It's all I've wanted for ages tbh.
mellarks 11th-Jan-2013 06:57 pm (UTC)
I've been forever bitter about how he and Disney have been battling over changing it for America, ugh.
paristomoscou 11th-Jan-2013 07:20 pm (UTC)
I have too :/ but I'm not surprised at all
cluelessraf 11th-Jan-2013 06:42 pm (UTC)
Shoot. I forgot this movie existed!
smokesinatra 11th-Jan-2013 06:45 pm (UTC)
this movie is a masterpiece.
missing_mile_15 11th-Jan-2013 06:45 pm (UTC)
I'm curious about how much darker the show would be. The novel's several kinds of fucked up but the Disney version itself is considered one of their darkest films.

All I really want is more pretty music and to either cut the Gargoyles or at least make it clear that they're figments of Quasimodo's imagination.
paristomoscou 11th-Jan-2013 07:22 pm (UTC)
There was a Disney Theatrical adaptation in Germany that was darker than the film (but maybe not AS dark as the novel). They've been reworking that show to be less dark for the American audience. :/

At least the music was great.
interpol15 11th-Jan-2013 07:28 pm (UTC)
I would really love it if the gargoyles were in Quasimodo's head. Like they could be seen as representations of his methods of coping with being trapped in Notre Dame, and as he slowly integrates with society and finds a place for himself they begin to disappear.
malarkiness 11th-Jan-2013 07:32 pm (UTC)
YES @ the gargoyles thing. That's how I always interpret their role and it makes them a bit more tolerable.
megalixer 11th-Jan-2013 07:40 pm (UTC)
Honestly, the German stage version (which is what I assume they'd be working off of) isn't that much darker than the Disney movie. Main differences are that it is made more obvious that the gargoyles are figment's of Quasimodo's imagination and Esmeralda stays dead at the end.

Both changes work for the better IMO, they make the Disney version more thematically consistent
without quite making it as grim!dark as the novel.
sarantsatsral 11th-Jan-2013 06:45 pm (UTC)
If it does, they better do it like the Germans did and have them die in the end like they are supposed to rather than the usual happy ending.
hollis1975 11th-Jan-2013 06:46 pm (UTC)
it already sounds like a stage musical anyways. i need to rewatch it sometime
