Nostalgia Post! 10 things you might not know about the Baby-Sitters Club

If you were a young girl during the 80s or 90s, you most likely read The Baby-Sitters Club. (I know I did.) You had a favorite sitter, a favorite client, and you probably even had a favorite Super Special. This book series was a big part of many little girls’ literary lives, so let’s take a look at some things you may not know about the BSC.

1. The popular series was created to capitalize on the popularity of another book about babysitting. The book was Ginny’s Babysitting Job, which was published in the early 80s. An editor at Scholastic saw the success of another novel about the hobby and decided that the publishing company needed their own version.

more dibbly-fresh trivia under the cut tbhCollapse )

California Dreams were my favorite, even if they were all incredibly traumatizing. (Sunny watches her mom die, Ducky is gay and bullied, Maggie is anorexic, Amelia is abused and stalked...)

Which was y'alls favorite? Maggie all the way for me, I liked her ~song lyrics~.

Now I need to go re-read them all.
fauxkaren 10th-Jan-2013 11:51 pm (UTC)
I think I liked Maggie the best.

I remember finding Sunny annoying, lol.

Didn't she cut school a lot and do drugs? I remember being like, "your life, your choices!" with her.
tine_marie 10th-Jan-2013 11:56 pm (UTC)
Amalia was my favourite because of the drawings that were in her book. She and Maggie had the most engaging stories to me. Ducky was also my hero.
welurklate 11th-Jan-2013 12:03 am (UTC)
Sunny was my girl because tween me related to ~free spirit worldly ways or something.
ztrellitaa 11th-Jan-2013 12:24 am (UTC)
Maggie all the way.
__papillon 10th-Jan-2013 11:48 pm (UTC)
does anyone remember which karen book it was, where she goes on a family trip or something and they live in an old house? and she maybe finds a diary or something. it's really vague sorry lol. i hated karen but i loved this story for some reason.
tine_marie 10th-Jan-2013 11:57 pm (UTC)
There was one where they went on vacation to Maine and she found a secret garden where they were staying at? Idk if that's what you were looking for but that one was my absolute faaaavourite book of the series.
__papillon 11th-Jan-2013 12:01 am (UTC)
yes omg what was it called again? i loved it so much, i reread it a bunch of times.

the only thing i remember is that she had saltwater taffy and so i really wanted to taste salt water taffy too lol. the internet didn't exist so i didn't even know what it looked like lol.

pikapika217 Re: had such a bb crush on stacey11th-Jan-2013 12:34 am (UTC)
I miss this show! it was the first time I realized I was gay and saw gay people that weren't white, blonde males
fauxkaren 10th-Jan-2013 11:49 pm (UTC)
I felt like Mary Anne was the BSC member ~most like me~ because she was quiet and liked to read books. Dawn was like me because we were both from ~California~. But I admired Stacy and Claudia for being so cool and stylish or whatever.

Kristy who? tbh.

And no1curr about Mallory or Abby.

Jessi was cool though. Too bad she was tied to the awful Mallory.
slacker_chic 10th-Jan-2013 11:54 pm (UTC)
lol poor Mallory is never gonig to be anyone's favorite.
actxappalledx 11th-Jan-2013 12:05 am (UTC)
i like her, idg all the hate!
chicken_queen 11th-Jan-2013 12:15 am (UTC)
Mallory isn't going to be anyone's favourite because she hits a little too close to home! (Forever nerdy.)
mandramoddle 10th-Jan-2013 11:49 pm (UTC)
I started reading the "Little Sister" series in the 4th grade, before maturing to the regular ones in 5th.
fwee_prower 10th-Jan-2013 11:50 pm (UTC)

imnotasquirrel 11th-Jan-2013 01:24 am (UTC)
the one i really liked was "girl-girlfriend", the song that played during the opening credits of the movie. i could never find an mp3 of it online, so i caved and purchased the used CD lol.
karinette001 10th-Jan-2013 11:52 pm (UTC)

__papillon 10th-Jan-2013 11:52 pm (UTC)

baglady25 Re: spirit animal11th-Jan-2013 04:24 am (UTC)

aujourlejour 10th-Jan-2013 11:55 pm (UTC)

crazycorgilady 10th-Jan-2013 11:59 pm (UTC)
i loved all the historical fiction shit [lol history major wut up] i could get my grubby hands on, and then got annoyed that as i got older it shifted from Dear America, Royal Diaries, and these in the historical fiction sections to like

Phillipa Gregory/Bodice Rippers
ascot_gavotte 11th-Jan-2013 12:18 am (UTC)
those books were after my time but I read the Night Flyers. as for American Girls, I think my fondness for WW2 history stems from Molly lol.
celtic_thistle 11th-Jan-2013 12:44 am (UTC)
These came out just as I was ~outgrowing~ American Girl, sigh.
aujourlejour 10th-Jan-2013 11:53 pm (UTC)
does anyone remember the book where mary ann fell off her bike and broke her leg? i remember the scene verbatim.

"mary ann!" cried logan

"logan!" i responded. "hooray for the day!"

"mary ann, look out!"

and then that dumb ho drove her bike straight into a pothlole and broke her leg or something. my sister and i still quote it.
soavantgarde 10th-Jan-2013 11:59 pm (UTC)
LMAO hooray for the day
galagooo 11th-Jan-2013 12:03 am (UTC)
Oh god, that's something I would do. I did a complete flip over the front of my bike after riding into a curb. Got back on the bike to go home an almost got run over by a pick-up.

Looking back I wonder if Claudia was made the dumb one so she wouldn't be the Asian stereotype.
__papillon 11th-Jan-2013 12:05 am (UTC)
i always thought claudia was so annoying lol.
mandramoddle 11th-Jan-2013 12:19 am (UTC)

slacker_chic Kinda OT but...10th-Jan-2013 11:53 pm (UTC)
since we're talking about series, can anyone recommend anything good? The librarian got me on the Dark Hunter series, but I like to switch it up in between books if anyone has any good suggestions
shadwrayvn Re: Kinda OT but...11th-Jan-2013 01:36 am (UTC)
what kind of series are you looking for? I love the Dark Hunter series & got hooked on Christine Feehan's Ghost Walker & Carpathian series & also love the Anita Blake series
slacker_chic Re: Kinda OT but...11th-Jan-2013 02:26 am (UTC)
I really like the supernatural so anything to do with that. I will pretty much read anything though I'm not big into period pieces :)

chimbleysweep Re: Speaking of traumatizing...11th-Jan-2013 12:35 am (UTC)
I LOVE THAT BOOK.

I love everything Zilpha Keatley Snyder. I was wickedly obsessed with her books as a sixth grader.
x_brittacular Re: Speaking of traumatizing...11th-Jan-2013 12:45 am (UTC)
Yasss
ivysaur Re: Speaking of traumatizing...11th-Jan-2013 01:02 am (UTC)
Zilpha Keatley Snyder is flawless. But my favorite of her books is always going to be The Egypt Game.
amarettosunset Re: Speaking of traumatizing...11th-Jan-2013 12:05 am (UTC)
Oh my god I had forgotten about this book! She tricks people into drowning in the pond, right?

Loving this post, it's taking me straight back to elementary school.
ascot_gavotte Re: Speaking of traumatizing...11th-Jan-2013 12:20 am (UTC)
yes but I didn't read it much b/c I felt bad for the main character. Her stepdad was such a dick.
sitakhet Re: Speaking of traumatizing...11th-Jan-2013 12:55 am (UTC)
omg this book, and all the other books this author wrote, so fucking traumatizing!
ladyserenity84 11th-Jan-2013 03:22 am (UTC)
OMG, this book. I still have it. Mary Downing Hahn was one of my go-to authors when I was little. Read a lot of them.
soavantgarde 10th-Jan-2013 11:54 pm (UTC)
I loooove these books, I bought the first one to read for a book report in 6th grade and ended up writing my report on the 5th one because I devoured them so quickly haha

I never finished the series though, I stopped on book 11 :/
flowerssleeping 10th-Jan-2013 11:56 pm (UTC)
yassss i love a series of unfortunate events
senorita__ 11th-Jan-2013 12:00 am (UTC)
i didnt start reading those till before the movie came out but i loooooved them. i never finished the series either :(
tine_marie 11th-Jan-2013 12:00 am (UTC)
Ugh this was another series that I grew up with waiting for each book to be released...I didn't like the later ones as much because they were darker and I missed the Baudelaires getting a new, unique guardian each time but the snark in these books is HILARIOUS. "Molehills are simply mounds of earth serving as condominiums for moles" remains one of my favourite quotes.
soavantgarde 11th-Jan-2013 12:03 am (UTC)
yeah, after the carnivorous carnival or whatever when they ran away for good I kinda started losing interest

and I heard handler left like 90% of the 'mysteries' unresolved, like about VFD and the fires and shit

I loved when I'd notice literary references as I got older tho
yurasama_love 11th-Jan-2013 12:09 am (UTC)
I loved all the incorrect definitions of words. Brilliant series.
carma_bee 11th-Jan-2013 12:11 am (UTC)
loooved these, though i haven't reread them since 13 came out. they were my first online fandom so it's they're kind of special to me
vivisexion 11th-Jan-2013 12:12 am (UTC)
i only read like 2 of those books but i always meant to finish the series...maybe i will some day
celtic_thistle 11th-Jan-2013 12:47 am (UTC)
omg this series is fucking amazing. I have all the books on my Kindle.
