Nostalgia Post! 10 things you might not know about the Baby-Sitters Club

If you were a young girl during the 80s or 90s, you most likely read The Baby-Sitters Club. (I know I did.) You had a favorite sitter, a favorite client, and you probably even had a favorite Super Special. This book series was a big part of many little girls’ literary lives, so let’s take a look at some things you may not know about the BSC.

1. The popular series was created to capitalize on the popularity of another book about babysitting. The book was Ginny’s Babysitting Job, which was published in the early 80s. An editor at Scholastic saw the success of another novel about the hobby and decided that the publishing company needed their own version.

2. Author Ann M. Martin was originally a freelance author when she was hired to write a book about baby-sitting. Martin was responsible for creating the plot-lines, details, and characters of The Baby-Sitters Club, as well as writing the first books. The series was about a club, rather than a single baby-sitter, to help promote team work and unity among young girls.

4. Author Ann M. Martin only wrote about 60 out of 213 total Baby-Sitters Club books. Most of the novels were ghostwritten by other authors, including 43 by Peter Lerangis, who also wrote for a spin-off of another popular teen series of the 80s, Sweet Valley Twins.

6. While there were popular spin-off's of the series (Baby-Sitters Little Sister namely), there were also less popular spin-offs. The California Diaries was a series of books based on Dawn Schafer's return to California in her teenage years. It took a slightly darker tone in its writing and touched on subjects such as anorexia, sexual identity, and racism. However, only 15 novels were published before the series’ end.

I don't think I read any of the books as a kid. I saw the movie, though.

I wish there had been a Fear Street series.
happy_endings11 10th-Jan-2013 11:38 pm (UTC)
I always wanted a Fear Street series. When they brought out Goosebumbs I really figured it was on the way. Such a waste of a good book series LOL. But Are You Afraid of the Dark satisfied me for a while.
honeyspun 11th-Jan-2013 12:28 am (UTC)
yasss i know what i'm doing this weekend--hunting down fear street ebooks starting with these:
yestrdays_jam 11th-Jan-2013 12:48 am (UTC)

_keng_ 11th-Jan-2013 02:41 am (UTC)
Yessss! I used to love these books when I was a teen. A few months ago, I found them used on Amazon, so I bought them. I got halfway through The Secret before having to stop, though. They were just so, so, so unbelievably bad. I was disappointed. :-(
diggingtrouble 11th-Jan-2013 03:25 am (UTC)
i read these so many times, they were amazing!
suki_yaki 11th-Jan-2013 01:02 am (UTC)
I wrote a letter (to R.L Stine...I think?) saying that Fear Street should be a tv series. Specifically the sagas.

I'm still waiting for it to happen..lol
emeyea 11th-Jan-2013 01:51 am (UTC)
i picked up some seasonal work at a bookstore, and someone sold 58 BSC books to us. it was the happiest day of my life, made even moreso when i got to buy them all for $3. Total.
williammiller 13th-Jan-2013 09:31 pm (UTC)
I would have loved a Fear Street series!
bodyline 10th-Jan-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
I've never read any of these books.
principino 10th-Jan-2013 11:56 pm (UTC)
Once they were all in puberty, the abortions started. I got it and actually I think it was a pretty responsible message, all in all, but I thought it was a bit of a stretch to ask us to believe that six teenagers--who happen to be neighbors, in business together and best friends--got pregnant and un-pregnant multiple times.
soapboxrhetoric 11th-Jan-2013 12:21 am (UTC)

I was so into the BSC series as a kid, I even wrote a fan letter to AMM and got a response. I still have that thing somewhere in one of my scrapbooks along with my rejection from Highlights.

Shattered dreams, thanks Highlights Magazine.

sorry bb but your ending made me crack up. that is so cool though that she wrote you back!
theflyers 10th-Jan-2013 11:30 pm (UTC)

No seriously, I still think it's pretty badass I got a response and maybe one day I'll forgive Highlights.

I still have posters, stickers and other shit from my BSC fan club subscription.
aujourlejour 10th-Jan-2013 11:51 pm (UTC)
my artwork was rejected several times by highlights. i would get so pissed when inferior drawings would be published.
eomir 11th-Jan-2013 12:58 am (UTC)
OMG, I wrote to her and got a response too! It was like the best day of my childhood.
thedorkygirl 11th-Jan-2013 01:40 am (UTC)
falling_cookie 11th-Jan-2013 03:30 am (UTC)
I did too! I love it!
wooha34 11th-Jan-2013 05:15 pm (UTC)
That's awesome that she wrote you back! Sorry about Highlights, they missed out :) haha

I "liked" her fanpage this past summer, and wrote her a comment about how big of a deal BSC was in my childhood. She wrote back a really nice note! I thought it was pretty cool that she wrote back. The little kid in me freaked out!
superdogbiter 10th-Jan-2013 11:26 pm (UTC)

fauxkaren 10th-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
I am pretty sure that I read ever Baby Sitters Club book ever publish.

And the mysteries.

And the Super Specials.

And the Mystery Specials.

I didn't read the spin off series based on Karen (because she was annoying as fuck even though I wanted to like her because we had the same name).

But I LOOOVED the California Diaries!
chantalzola 10th-Jan-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
I even went to a Camp Mohawk one year. It was fucking horrible and not like the book at all, btw. But for what it's worth on the last full day, i did release some of the animals from the nature room. By accident. of course.

Oh and what was the spin off with Mallory and Jesse? I read some of those books, though they were for a younger readership.

ladyserenity84 11th-Jan-2013 03:11 am (UTC)
I wanted to give Sunny a hug - that book was very sad.
baglady25 11th-Jan-2013 04:05 am (UTC)
That was heartbreaking
fauxkaren 10th-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
Oh yes. I also read the portrait collection books (books that were autobiographies of each girl).

I never finished reading the Friends Forever books tho. It was just too different and too weird and I was like 14 when they were being published so I was kinda growing out of them.
tine_marie 10th-Jan-2013 11:40 pm (UTC)
I was the original badass for reading the California Diaries in the 4th grade and got all my friends doing it too and the librarian realized what they were about and got completely scandalized and put them on a grade 7/8 only list. By the time I got old enough to actually check them out I had already read them all lmfao.

Ducky is forever my King. And I thought Amalia was the coolest.
senorita__ 10th-Jan-2013 11:46 pm (UTC)
i am you, except i read the little sister series... even though karen annoyed the FUCK out of me!! idk why i tortured myself bc after every book i finished i donated it to the library and was pissed at myself for reading it
ascot_gavotte 11th-Jan-2013 12:02 am (UTC)
I fucking loved the Super Specials
amalgamade 11th-Jan-2013 12:43 am (UTC)
Karen used to piss me off so badly bc she refused to used contractions. "Kristy, I can not believe that you did not go to the store! This is not fair." etc. It was so annoying smh imagine 12-yr old me getting angry at these books lol.
hey_jealousy 11th-Jan-2013 01:09 am (UTC)
the mysteries were the shit, karen fucking sucked. i also hated mallory and jessie bc they were ~young even tho i was like 9.
thedorkygirl 11th-Jan-2013 01:42 am (UTC)
i'm karen, too!!! i had the karen doll, and two of the books, but that was it. she was spoiled
if_musicbe 11th-Jan-2013 02:32 am (UTC)
I JUST LEARNED OF THE CALIFORNIA DIARIES EXISTENCE!!! I even read Mary-Ann's stories, hw did I not know about Dawn's?!!! Brb, off book hunting on amazon.
rosewood39 11th-Jan-2013 03:03 am (UTC)
this sounds like my sisters and I, we had all of them up (at that time). We wore those books out.
ladyserenity84 11th-Jan-2013 03:10 am (UTC)
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who loved the California Diaries series. I bought every single one of the novels as they were released (that and I got the special diary that came with it at one go).
baglady25 11th-Jan-2013 04:04 am (UTC)
The California Diaries were flawless. I read them when I was the same age as the characters in the books and could relate so much.
__restless 11th-Jan-2013 07:18 pm (UTC)
california diaries was AWESOME!!!!!!!! i was so mad that they only made a few.
mydogfred 10th-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
lmao poor Mallory
burn_a_miracle 10th-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
I really loved Little Sisters.
l_a_r_m 10th-Jan-2013 11:47 pm (UTC)
ugh no way, Karen was such a whiny brat!

I will never forgive that series for making me think that all of karen's invented expressions were real words. I remember using them in front of people and being so embarrassed when they were like lol wut? :(((
burn_a_miracle 11th-Jan-2013 12:02 am (UTC)
lol, I related to her cause I was a whiny brat, too.
anna_drenxavier 10th-Jan-2013 11:52 pm (UTC)
HAHA yes, those were the books I read. The only one I remember is when the blonde chick with glasses decided to ~surprise~ everyone with an impromptu solo during a Thanksgiving play. And one of the Babysitter's was like, "O that's a great idea!" And so she did it, and got in trouble.
rebeljean 11th-Jan-2013 12:00 am (UTC)
Me too.
celtic_thistle 11th-Jan-2013 12:24 am (UTC)
It annoyed me how there were no contractions in the books. Nobody spoke in contractions!
_keng_ 11th-Jan-2013 02:43 am (UTC)
Same! I hated Karen, but I loved those books!
slacker_chic 10th-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
ahh Claudia was MY FAVORITE!!! I am a self admitted sugar addict and whenever I pull Ho-Hos from my pocket or gummy bears from a hidden location I say I'm pulling a Claudia and no one knows what the fuck I'm talking about.
actxappalledx 10th-Jan-2013 11:39 pm (UTC)
haha that's amazing
ediesedgwick 10th-Jan-2013 11:42 pm (UTC)
lmaooo ilu

Claudia was my style icon in the early 90s. There are some truly embarrassing pictures of me in oversize tye-die shirts to prove it
slacker_chic 10th-Jan-2013 11:44 pm (UTC)
lol me too! It started off with Punky Brewster, then graduated to Clarissa (who Explained it ALL!) and Claudia. They were both so funky with their own sense of sassy style!

deltabean 11th-Jan-2013 03:07 am (UTC)
Same! I thought Claudia was the coolest
senorita__ 10th-Jan-2013 11:47 pm (UTC)
i wanted to like claudia but she was so damn STUPID. there i said it
ascot_gavotte 11th-Jan-2013 12:02 am (UTC)
claudia was my favorite because we were both ~artistic Asian girls but in retrospect we were not alike because I could spell my name
misscrystal 11th-Jan-2013 12:14 am (UTC)
My bff at the time would ALWAYS get to be Claudia because she was "fashionable" (LOL false) and bad at math (true). I used to get so pressed about it bc Claudia was the coolest, but then I realized how dumb she was and decided to be Jessie instead.
deathbytamarind 11th-Jan-2013 03:39 am (UTC)
I love Claudia. I have an array of whacky jewelry because of her influence. I have an affinity for fruit earrings thanks to her.
chantalzola 10th-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
Team Claudia! She was always my fave.

My friend and I actually started a Babysitters Club. Unfortunately I sucked at babysitting, but she was awesome.
__restless 11th-Jan-2013 07:20 pm (UTC)
my friends and i were too young, so we started a pet-sitters club. we had one meeting and put up all our fliers that we wrote in magic marker. it rained the next day and they were ruined :( that was the end of it, haha
theratwhispers 10th-Jan-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
Since this is a book post, I reblogged some picture on Tumblr with some terrible books, stated my opinion, and figured that would be the end of it. The owner of the picture came a long and told me to delete my response, cause she didn't put her pictures on Tumblr for likes and reblogs. OH.
blessedbell 10th-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
lol wtf

what did you do?
sandstorm 10th-Jan-2013 11:30 pm (UTC)
They must be awfully busy notifying everyone who reblogs them.

nicenicegirl 11th-Jan-2013 01:45 am (UTC)
sort of similar....i got bitched out the other day on tumblr by someone for saying Emma Swan from OUAT was bland and they told me to stop bashing characters in the tags. wtf i wasn't aware there were tumblr police jfc

iluvdykes 11th-Jan-2013 12:37 am (UTC)
That's because they secretly hated Mallory (the redhead) and always got her ass to do things. It wasn't bad enough that she was the oldest out of 10 fucking kids, she was treated like shit like the rest of the gang.
cl0vergirl 10th-Jan-2013 11:47 pm (UTC)
I had a couple of episodes on VHS and used to watch them over and over again. Wish I knew where they were.
