Which One of These Old White Guys Will Win Another Oscar?

Happy Oscar Nominations Day! Did you wake up early to watch Seth McFarland and Emma Stone announce the nominees? Can you think of a quirkier couple to do so? Here's the run-down: they only bothered to come up with nine movies to nominate for Best Picture, they figured Kathryn Bigelow didn't need any more nominations (probably because of Bridesmaids solving feminism or something last year), and Jessica Chastain with the Julliard degree is up against a nine-year-old. But most importantly: five old white men are gunning for another Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category. Who will it be?!

Will it be Alan Arkin, showing his range after winning for playing a grumpy, foul-mouthed grandpa in Little Miss Sunshine with his brilliant turn as a grumpy, foul-mouthed film producer in Argo? How about Robert De Niro, who in Silver Linings Playbook gave us the best performance of an old man with OCD tendencies since Jack Nicholson won for As Good As It Gets? Then there's Philip Seymour Hoffman, who famously raised his voice and twisted his eyeglasses a few times for his Oscar-winning turn as Truman Capote, this time playing L. Rob Hubbard (basically) with his natural, deep voice in The Master. Or will it be Chrisoph Waltz, bringing levity and humor to the American slave trade in the same way he made it OK to finally laugh at—and with—Nazis.

Personally, I think it’s going to be Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln. You see, he sleeps with his black maid (spoiler alert, I guess, although I still refuse to see Lincoln). Remember when he won an Oscar for The Fugitive and said, “I don’t care,” right before Harrison Ford jumped out of that dam? That was a good movie. Hell, just give him another one. Who cares.

i loved this morning when emma/seth were like, "A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!!!!!"
browniecakemix 10th-Jan-2013 11:17 pm (UTC)
wait what did they say? I couldn't watch it, were they making fun?
ugly_jacket 10th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
yes, after every announcement emma was like, "he's already won, he's already won," etc to all of them, and then at the end seth was like, "what a breath of fresh air"
nymphadoratonks 10th-Jan-2013 11:47 pm (UTC)
they were hilarious

I wish, even though he wouldn't give a fuck - but I think DDL is going to take it.
megalixer 10th-Jan-2013 11:36 pm (UTC)
Nothing would make my inner 13-year-old-fangirl happier but as we get closer and closer I'm thinking it'll be DDL.

sorry 'bout it
fabouluz 10th-Jan-2013 11:13 pm (UTC)
I loved TLJ in He Fugitive.
holyfrijoles_2 10th-Jan-2013 11:14 pm (UTC)
The actress categories are so much more interesting than all of the men this year, especially lead. I thought Lawrence was the front runner, but everyone is saying that it could go between her, Chastain, and Watts. There's also the possibility of a surprise Riva win. Basically it's the most interesting awards race in a while.

brucelynn 10th-Jan-2013 11:17 pm (UTC)
Jennifer Lawrence is so overhyped it is unbelievable .... well it's not really unbelievable considering she's ... well you know

I hope Chastain or Riva gets it instead of that butt brain
beaddddddsss 10th-Jan-2013 11:19 pm (UTC)
Riva would be amazing.
ponpiri 10th-Jan-2013 11:21 pm (UTC)
I would love it if Riva won.
crystalzelda 10th-Jan-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
I know most people are talking about Lawrence winning but I've actually heard really mixed responses to her performance? idk I heard a lot more good from her in Winter's Bone.
zeldafitzgerald 10th-Jan-2013 11:37 pm (UTC)
When the film premiered in Toronto, hers was the performance everyone was talking about and when I saw it in November I was surprised because I thought that Cooper was just as good, if not better, and was surprised because I hadn't come to expect that from him.
browniecakemix 10th-Jan-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
I don't care how good she was, if Watts gets it for playing a poor little white woman whose vacation was inconvenienced by the tsunami that WIPED OUT HALF OF SOUTHEAST ASIA I will be furious.
horrorparties 10th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
Lawrence should not win for SLP, she was probably the least interesting performance.
anna_bea2 10th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
ugh I would love it if Riva or Quvenzhané Wallis went and snatched it away while everyone was looking out for Jennifer and Jessica.
ialmrnt5 10th-Jan-2013 11:24 pm (UTC)
i feel like chastain's role wasn't showy enough... alsoooo some of the lines she was given were too cheesey to be said in a believable way
lovefifteen 10th-Jan-2013 11:32 pm (UTC)
I feel like it was closer before the noms came out. Now that ZDT has been snubbed for director, Jessica probably has less of a chance while all the SLP love has boosted JLaw's chances. I'd love a Riva win though!
zeldafitzgerald 10th-Jan-2013 11:34 pm (UTC)
At this point I think Lawrence has the momentum but I wouldn't at all be surprised if Riva won (or even Wallis, for that matter).
ms_mmelissa 10th-Jan-2013 11:36 pm (UTC)
Lawrence is winning. They loved SLP enough for it to have a nomination in all 4 of the acting categories. They're going to reward it somewhere and it's going to be with Lawrence cause she's the only one with a shot at winning. :/
sekhmet2 10th-Jan-2013 11:15 pm (UTC)
I'm pulling for Tommy Lee Jones because, while I like the others very much, I just love him. Would be happy with any of them, though; it's a nice lineup.
thishollywood 10th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
he reminds me of my grandpa

numbedtoe 11th-Jan-2013 01:07 am (UTC)
I'm with you Snape. I adore TLJ.

He's the only Oscar I've ever called as I walked out of the theater. My Mom and I went to see The Fugitive and I said, "He's gonna get an Oscar for this." and he was part of my 7 year run on calling supporting actor.

fucking michael caine.
schumannistic 11th-Jan-2013 02:41 am (UTC)
loved him in hope springs
zeldafitzgerald 10th-Jan-2013 11:17 pm (UTC)
I really hope that Lincoln, ZDT, Life of Pi and Django split the Best Picture vote so that Beasts eeks in to take it.

Though, knowing my luck it'll be SLP to benefit from something like that...
holyfrijoles_2 10th-Jan-2013 11:21 pm (UTC)
I have a weird feeling that SLP might sweep.
zeldafitzgerald 10th-Jan-2013 11:28 pm (UTC)
I mean, I liked the film and thought all the performances saved it from being a travesty because they were so good but Beasts is the superior film (my favorite of the year, for sure). I'm hoping it upsets a la Crash and Shakespeare in Love (except not because it's actually a good movie).
crucified 10th-Jan-2013 11:17 pm (UTC)
I want Christoph Waltz to win.
zombieland 11th-Jan-2013 01:24 am (UTC)
Same. He's the only one I'm REALLY rooting for
tamings 11th-Jan-2013 01:28 am (UTC)
me too
whiskybars 10th-Jan-2013 11:18 pm (UTC)
i feel like deniro might win on the sole account that he is deniro and apparently it's the first time he's tried in years.

christoph doesn't stand a chance; it's either tommy or PSH.
teaaet 10th-Jan-2013 11:18 pm (UTC)
christoph waltz. and fuck this author for lumping him into this stupid category.
beaddddddsss WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:18 pm (UTC)
I think Hugh or Bradley will win Best Actor.
Jennifer will win Best Actress.
Supporting Actress is Anne's, you can bet all your money on that. She's campaigning and kissing ass so hard. Girlfriend's thirsty.
Supporting Actor is more indistinguishable, but it'll probably go to Tommy.
Best picture will be Argo or Silver Linings.
Best song is Adele's.
hera_bearrra Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:19 pm (UTC)
LBR, Lincoln will win most, if not all, of the awards.
beaddddddsss Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
I keep hearing otherwise! IDK, man, all the critics are in love with Silver Linings Playbook and the buzz is strong. It's the first film to be nominated in all four acting categories in over 30 years.
arisingphoenix Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
A. I basically agree. Although I think SLP might sneak one or two and B. you're icon made me want to watch some girls and now i'm obsessed lol. So awkward creepy thank you for inadvertently intro-ing me to a fabulous show.
sandstorm Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
.Best song is Adele's.

Yep.

If the Academy is thinking, best animated picture will be ParaNorman. Otherwise, unfortunately Brave.
fauxkaren Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
I wish that Argo would win Best Picture, but idk.

I feel like recently the buzz has been swinging in favor of Zero Dark Thirty and Django Unchained.

And I think Daniel Day Lewis is gonna win for Best Actor.
whiskybars Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:21 pm (UTC)
adele and ugh that bitch better perform i s2g.
lincoln will sweep.
spielberg for best director.
DDL. possible denzel or jackman upset.
i honestly have no idea @ best actress. pulling out for jessica, qwallis and riva.
anne and i'll be here feeding on their haters' pressed tears.
tommy, since he's been sweeping awards left and right.
anna_bea2 Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:26 pm (UTC)
Best Actress: Jessica or Jennifer (I was sure Jessica, but after this morning idk anymore. I'm hoping for a Riva upset)
Best Actor: DDL (Joaquin should win)
Supp. Actress: Anne (I wish Amy would win, but it won't happen)
Supp Actor: Maybe Tommy Lee Jones, but I think De Niro could win just because he's De Niro and people are calling this his ~acting comeback even though he said that was bullshit lol.
Best Pic: Lincoln

arisingphoenix Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
I think Bradley or DDL for best Actor
Jennifer has best actress unless she inserts foot in mouth some more. Then Jessica or Riva.
Supporting Actress I think is gonna go to Sally Field or Weaver as the shock of the night
Best Picture and Song Agreed
Supporting Actor I think it's gonna be Deniro or Waltz maybe Jones if Lincoln ends up shut out til Director.
saintssin Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:29 pm (UTC)

tusiaczek87 Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:31 pm (UTC)
predictions:
DDL- Best Actor.
Jessica for Best Actress
Supporting Actress Anne
Supporting Actor TLJ
Best picture Lincoln
Best song is Adele

i would like for Riva to win and idk Amour/Django for best pic
i want to see some shocking wins ;p
charmqn86 Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:32 pm (UTC)
Best Actor: I want Denzel to win, but I go with Bradley.
Actress: Jessica Chastain
Supporting Actor: Deniro
Supporting Actress: Pulling for anyone but Anne, so I think it will be Sally Field.
Best Song: Adele
Best Picture: Argo
Best Director: fucking Speilberg.
tadashee Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:33 pm (UTC)
lol jesse tyler fergouson just retweeted that anne is probably already on the carpet
megalixer Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:42 pm (UTC)
DDL for Best Actor (possibly Joaquin if they're not wanting to give an actor/actress their third acting win two years in a row)

Jennifer for Best Actress (possibly Jessica)

Anne for Supporting Actress 110%

Supporting Actor is up for grabs but I'm guessing Tommy or De Niro given that Lincoln and SLP seem to be the most universally liked of the movies running major campaigns

Lincoln for BP (possibly SLP if Harvey Weinstein works voodoo magic)

Adele for Best Song
zeldafitzgerald Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:46 pm (UTC)
Best Actor: Day-Lewis or Cooper as upset
Actress: Lawrence or Riva as upset
Supporting Actress: I'm in the minority but I think Sally Field has this locked up, because I refuse to believe otherwise
Supporting Actor: Waltz or Lee Jones
Best Picture: I think that the heavyweights could split the votes to allow Beasts to win.
Best Director: Spielberg, for sure.
goldengal1193 Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?10th-Jan-2013 11:51 pm (UTC)
I'm always bad at these, but:

Best Actress: Lawrence
Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix or DDL
Best Picture: Argo
Supporting Actress: Hathaway
Supporting Actor: De Niro
sevenbeat Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?11th-Jan-2013 12:15 am (UTC)
Best Picture: Life of Pi
Best Actor: DDL
Best Actress: Riva
Best Director: Ang Lee
Best Actor supporting: TLJ
Best Actress supporting: Anne. (she will cut a bitch if she doesn't too)
Best song: Skyfall-Adele
onceupon_awish Re: WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS OF THE WINNERS, ONTD?11th-Jan-2013 12:27 am (UTC)
The only ones I feel comfortable predicting so far are
Anne for supporting actress
Brave or Paranorman for animated feature
Paper man for animated short (even if I wouldn't mind Maggie Simpson in "The Longest Daycare" winning just because I love Maggie Simpson and the ending was great)
Skyfall for original song (or I'll cut a bitch)

IDEC. EMPTY CHAIRS AT EMPTY TABLES MADE ME UGLY CRY.

Tommy Lee Jones is gonna win though. Christoph Waltz could MAYBE get it, but.... idk. I think Tommy Lee Jones has it in the bag.
abbiemills 10th-Jan-2013 11:23 pm (UTC)
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables was so fucking amazing. I didn't expect him to get nommed, but it would've been a nice surprise.

SO HAPPY that my bb Quvenzhane Wallis was nominated. I hope she snatches JLAW's wig tbh
fauxkaren 10th-Jan-2013 11:25 pm (UTC)
Yas!

I thought that Beasts was only an ok movie because the script needed work, but Quvenzhane was AMAZING and was easily the best part of the movie. She deserves to win so hard.

DDL is 55. Jones is in his 60s. The only one I'd call "old" would be Arkin who is almost 80. And to answer the question, I agree with the article and think maybe Tommy Lee Jones will take it. Nice group of performances though and it'll be a tough race.
