Robopocalypse Movie Delayed Indefinitely

Steven Spielberg's 'Robopocalypse' Postponed Indefinitely

The DreamWorks film, with distribution from Fox and Disney, was set to hit theaters in 2014.

Steven Spielberg's Robopocalypse has been postponed for an indefinite time.

The sci-fi action film from DreamWorks would have been distributed by Fox and Disney, with Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth in talks to star.

Based on the 2011 book by Daniel H. Wilson, Robopocalypse would have reunited Fox and Spielberg, who worked together on 2002's Minority Report.

Spielberg spokesman Marvin Levy said the project was "too important and the script is not ready, and it's too expensive to produce. It's back to the drawing board to see what is possible."

It's unclear what project will be next for Spielberg, whose Lincoln has earned more than $145 million at the worldwide box office and is an Oscar front-runner.

Some in the industry wondered whether Spielberg would want to pursue Robopocalypse after the director's 60 Minutes interview that aired Oct. 21, during which he said he could do an action film "in my sleep at this point in my career," adding, "it doesn't attract me anymore."

Robopocalypse was to be the first producing project for Tom Rothman, the former chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment -- who, months earlier, had agreed to partner with DreamWorks on the $100 million-plus production.

The project was announced in October 2010 as Spielberg's next movie after War Horse. DreamWorks picked up the book by Wilson, who has a Ph.D. in robotics, in 2009. Drew Goddard, who wrote Cloverfield as well as The Cabin in the Woods, penned the adaptation.

Production was set to begin in January 2012, but it was taken off the table after a couple of months as the filmmaker focused on Lincoln.

Good. Let's make a Ready Player One movie instead.

I second Ready Player One.
angelmonster 10th-Jan-2013 01:35 am (UTC)
Spielberg has lost his shine tbh.
ppeak 10th-Jan-2013 07:53 pm (UTC)
I think he rushes to get his pictures done quickly, that's the problem.

Also, he should probably shake things up with his folks. Does he HAVE to use John Williams and Janusz Kaminski for every film he does?

Use someone else...ONCE. Try something different.
angelmonster 11th-Jan-2013 01:32 am (UTC)
A lot of directors do that and I understand it but only if they are good actors.
ppeak 11th-Jan-2013 01:39 am (UTC)
I'm not talking about actors, I'm talking about his Cinematographer and his Composer.

He needs to shift his look and tone of his films sometimes.

I love it, but trying some new folks might ignite something for him.

He's still one of the best seasoned directors working today, but I would love to see him take something he would never do and make it something special.
principino 10th-Jan-2013 01:35 am (UTC)
It's so important that they couldn't get the script right? I sort of see the point he's trying to make but I highly doubt that's the reason Speilberg et al. passed on it. Something else is afoot.
backupblood 10th-Jan-2013 02:19 am (UTC)
Maybe that he realized Lincoln is probably gonna win Best Picture and didn't want to follow it up with a robot movie...
principino 10th-Jan-2013 02:20 am (UTC)
That occurred to me--Speilberg doesn't want to do lowbrow anymore.
backupblood 10th-Jan-2013 02:22 am (UTC)
I don't think that he doesn't want to do "lowbrow" (I prefer the term commercial), he just doesn't want to do a robot movie right now.
moddchicc 10th-Jan-2013 01:36 am (UTC)
Aw man, I was actually looking forward to this. I like Anne and Chris, and think Spielberg is always at his best with sci-fi.
imnotasquirrel 10th-Jan-2013 01:37 am (UTC)
good, it doesn't deserve a movie based on its stupid title alone
the__batgirl 10th-Jan-2013 01:39 am (UTC)
Good, Ben Whishaw was too good for this anyways. :-P
interpol15 10th-Jan-2013 01:42 am (UTC)
Wait, was he rumored to be in this? Ben is way too amazing for something this bad sounding.
the__batgirl 10th-Jan-2013 02:34 am (UTC)
Yep AND he was going to play a hacker. So yeah. :-/
tipsily_be 10th-Jan-2013 04:52 am (UTC)
Yeah he's good where he is as a hacker now
hierarchia 10th-Jan-2013 03:09 am (UTC)

jeveuxmacaron 10th-Jan-2013 03:26 am (UTC)
4 months ago i would have agreed but i'm off him after the yellowface shit
alexlover14 10th-Jan-2013 11:25 am (UTC)
Did he even do yellowface in that movie? (I only ask because I can't find pics and although I love him I haven't been that interested in the film)
jeveuxmacaron 10th-Jan-2013 11:22 pm (UTC)
yeah, i can't find the pics of it but they were gross

they might have been cut from the movie tho, tbh i was super drunk when i saw it so i can't remember haha
sandstorm 10th-Jan-2013 01:40 am (UTC)
Yes @ RPO.
hazel_belle 10th-Jan-2013 01:42 am (UTC)
I would have enjoyed Anne and Chris working on a film together but if the chips aren't falling where they were supposed for this, oh well.
wincest_dean 10th-Jan-2013 01:42 am (UTC)
i was looking forward to this :(
it_llbeyourname 10th-Jan-2013 01:44 am (UTC)

ROBOPOPOCOCOLOCOCALYPSE
vickyblueeyez 10th-Jan-2013 02:04 am (UTC)
I've purchased this book a long time ago and have yet to read it. The summary sounded really interesting.
velocityofsound 10th-Jan-2013 02:17 am (UTC)
The book sucked sucked sucked. I am not at all surprised that they couldn't get a script together that would be good enough for Spielberg, even Michael Bay would be too good for this shit. No surprise a Hemsworth was attached.
josh_the_k 10th-Jan-2013 02:22 am (UTC)
I spent most of the book thinking "There's so much more you could be doing with this premise!"
brenden 10th-Jan-2013 02:19 am (UTC)
i smell star wars tbh
josh_the_k 10th-Jan-2013 02:21 am (UTC)
This book had a great premise, but horrific execution. I was hoping the film would only use the premise and jettison most of the plot. Not surprised there are script problems.
sugary_placenta 10th-Jan-2013 02:37 am (UTC)
is this book good

i own it but haven't bothered to read it yet.
tx5mym5 10th-Jan-2013 03:25 am (UTC)
No. it tries to copy World War Z, but it fails. It tries to do multiple heroes around the world, but they all have the same voice and it's very USA-centric.

I never felt the threat from the robots and only a few scenes were scary chilling.
sukha4 10th-Jan-2013 03:02 am (UTC)
Good. That's a really stupid title.

I do hope he does a sic-fi/action movie soon rather than these Oscar baiting movies.
oh7 10th-Jan-2013 03:21 am (UTC)
Minority Report was a good sci-fi film.
tx5mym5 10th-Jan-2013 03:25 am (UTC)
great because the book sucked.
starchain 10th-Jan-2013 03:53 am (UTC)
I really wanted to see this.
Basically because I really want to see Chris Hemsworth beat the shit out of people.
tipsily_be 10th-Jan-2013 04:53 am (UTC)
Whishaw would have probably died in it anyway. He either takes a bath, wears glasses, or dies in everything.
tipsily_be 10th-Jan-2013 04:54 am (UTC)
Or smokes.
prophecypro 10th-Jan-2013 05:35 am (UTC)
Kinda wanted to see this
ohwutevernvm 10th-Jan-2013 09:04 am (UTC)
oh man, this book was on my list to read and I lost it somewhere! give it to me straight, was it good?
mahasin 10th-Jan-2013 03:37 pm (UTC)
Not really.

I thought his "How to survive a Robot Apocalypse" was better (it's non-fiction though).

d'aww thank you
vanillefax 10th-Jan-2013 11:23 am (UTC)
Good. Would have been just another sausage fest.
