Lena Dunham Caved to Her Critics on Race, and It Made "Girls" a Better Show

girls season 2

The backlash to season one of HBO's "Girls" erupted as soon as the wunderkind glow around Lena Dunham had dimmed. On The Hairpin, Jenna Wortha lamented unham’s failure “to weave a main black character” into the show. The blog Racialiciou posted piece titled “Dear Lena Dunham: I exist.” And Dunham leapt to apologize. “If we have the opportunity to do a second season, I’ll address that,” sh told he Huffington Post. Soon after season two began shooting, news was leaked that “Girls” had put out casting notices seeking “hipster types” of “all ethnicities.”

Lena Dunham + Donald Glover... ok here we goCollapse )

“You know what, honestly maybe you should think about the fact that you could be fetishizing me. Because how many white women have you dated? Maybe you think of us as one big white blobby mass with stupid ideas. So why don’t you lay this thing down, flip it, and reverse it.” “You just said a Missy Elliot lyric,” Sandy says wearily.

ugh.

what the fuck is this nonsense?
ialmrnt5 9th-Jan-2013 11:57 pm (UTC)
Y'ALL ARE FUCKING CRAZY

lol seriously, she wrote a POC in & now she didn't do it correctly, its not the right POC for you etc. then again ONTD hates minorities more than anyone if they dare to be a republican (i.e. stacy dash)

it will never matter, you already have your self righteous sjw minds made up about her & there's nothing she can do about it

thankfully none of you work at HBO because this is actually a really great show & a lot of people love it & she is coming around to making the cast more diverse/a proper representation of NYC

You really tried to offend everyone with that nonsense, but I for one am not taking the bait. I don't even have the energy for one of those "You didn't even try at all" stars.
ialmrnt5 10th-Jan-2013 12:05 am (UTC)
oops a different viewpoint, must be "trying to offend" it just seems silly that everyone wanted her to write a POC character onto her show & once she does & we have a post about it the feedback is worse than before, like rly now?
georgeslymaniv 10th-Jan-2013 12:55 am (UTC)
Did Stacey Dash pay her to write this character
robot_hanabi 10th-Jan-2013 12:56 am (UTC)
I was ready for this post, ONTD. You have failed me.
peace_criminal 10th-Jan-2013 01:18 am (UTC)
I think lots of ONTDrs hate her because they're protective of their own stories and identities and the show encroaches on them. It makes their lives less unique. The same goes on at /lit/; dudes hating on Chuck Palahnuik and his novel Fight Club.
xcollsangelx 10th-Jan-2013 04:42 am (UTC)
Well, this show couldn't get any worse.

prophecypro 10th-Jan-2013 05:07 am (UTC)
lol@she was made to show diversity in her New York lol
devourlove 10th-Jan-2013 06:38 am (UTC)
wow how nice of ha to introduce a single black person as a lesson for the white people in challenging the criticisms of diversity.
sleepless_ghost 10th-Jan-2013 05:18 pm (UTC)
I was sceptic when it first started, but by the end of the 1st season I really loved Girls. Not as good as other shows...*cough* Watch Enlightened if you have HBO *cough*, but good!
browniecakemix 10th-Jan-2013 06:53 pm (UTC)
This actually sounds great and I'm seriously wondering how many of the people eyerolling about this actually read the article very carefully (as opposed to skimming and just assuming it was describing exactly what they expected it to). I hope she backs it up by including more POC, but this storyline basically sounds like one big fat "sorry, guys, you were right" to the people who called her out on her racefail.

It would be cool if Sandy stayed on the show after they broke up--to give his character a purpose/role in the show beyond just educating the white girl.

How about you just write characters as persons and not colors and cast any color , is poc so different you have to write about them like you're writing for a different species ?
