Lena Dunham Caved to Her Critics on Race, and It Made "Girls" a Better Show

girls season 2

The backlash to season one of HBO's "Girls" erupted as soon as the wunderkind glow around Lena Dunham had dimmed. On The Hairpin, Jenna Wortha lamented unham’s failure “to weave a main black character” into the show. The blog Racialiciou posted piece titled “Dear Lena Dunham: I exist.” And Dunham leapt to apologize. “If we have the opportunity to do a second season, I’ll address that,” sh told he Huffington Post. Soon after season two began shooting, news was leaked that “Girls” had put out casting notices seeking “hipster types” of “all ethnicities.”

Lena Dunham + Donald Glover... ok here we goCollapse )

Edit: oh god comments enabled. sorry y'all i'm new to making actual posts.

I bet she's so proud of herself for adding the token black guy to the show.
buffymovies 9th-Jan-2013 10:27 pm (UTC)
“I don’t live in a world where there are divisions like this,” she says. His simple reply: "You do."

Glad they put this in the show. I think it shows that she does understand the complaints people had, and that she was being being very white in not getting it automatically.
rainbow_fish 9th-Jan-2013 10:28 pm (UTC)
Except that I bet in the show there will be some explosion or other distraction so that you don't even hear it/think about it ever again.
troy_macclure 9th-Jan-2013 10:52 pm (UTC)
mte. I don't know what the future holds for the show or his character, but it honestly sounds like the right track.
rainbow_fish 9th-Jan-2013 10:27 pm (UTC)
Fuck her.
fusilli_head 9th-Jan-2013 10:44 pm (UTC)
mte. I didn't like her to begin with and I'm 10000% done with her ass now. I don't know why she can't use some fucking common sense here. sure, all us pesky people that went after her get a poc, but he's also a fucking republican and from the sound of it has abhorrent views on marriage equality and gun control? cool. not saying that the poc characters have to be saints but did she have to trot out every negative characteristic she could? why not just have someone as narcissistic and ridiculous as the rest of the characters on her show?
evawhimsy 9th-Jan-2013 10:58 pm (UTC)
eh she could have written him as a stereotypical black liberal too. it's at least interesting to not automatically place him in that box, but i haven't seen the show so no idea if it's done well.
browniecakemix 10th-Jan-2013 06:41 pm (UTC)
um it sounds like he's a well-rounded character

are you seriously just upset that he doesn't sound like someone you'd like irl because that's a really stupid reason to condemn someone's characterization of a fictional POC
cageyb 9th-Jan-2013 10:29 pm (UTC)
That honestly does sound like a very cogent moment. A well-presented critique of the show's problems and some real life ones encountered by POC as well.

But are there any actual recurring characters of color beyond Glover's small arc? Will there be any more? Because the criticism was never that Girls needed to be everything to everybody or to tackle race. The complaint was that a show set in a very racially diverse city could have easily included a recurring main character of color that wasn't a service worker, hobo or nanny and they chose not to, even though POC can also travel in those same social circles and can be just as obliviously spoiled, entitled and self-involved. Because POC can be written into a show and not exist to be a walking lesson on racism.

It's a damned if you do/damned if you don't scenario. Obviously she had to address the issue, but to suddenly usher in a troupe of POC characters and try to act like nothing happened would have been a cowardly thing for her to do as a writer. For her to address it head on was actually for the best.

mte on all points tbh

I do think this is a great way to open up discussion on the topic though and perhaps throughout the season we'll see some more POC characters idk idk
actxappalledx 9th-Jan-2013 10:30 pm (UTC)
“Modern Family” tried to explain away complaints that gay couple Cameron and Mitchell never kissed onscreen by devoting an episode to discussing Mitchell’s fear of public displays of affection. But a week later, Cam and Mitchell were as chaste as ever.

To be fair, none of the couples on that show ever really kiss. Phil and Claire and Gloria and Jay hardly ever kiss each other, either
zharia 9th-Jan-2013 10:34 pm (UTC)
the only time you ever see phil and claire physical with each other is when they are being complete flops at sex.
honeyspun 9th-Jan-2013 10:30 pm (UTC)
this article is a pretentious mess. dunham has a real talent for trying to appease/apologize and managing to piss people off even more
cruel_idol 9th-Jan-2013 10:31 pm (UTC)
Damn she was fucked either way.
brucelynn 9th-Jan-2013 10:32 pm (UTC)
Lena is kicking it with a black man ! OMG praise jesus

Girl let me set up a nice banquet for you and take you shopping afterwards !

You deserve it!
treebraids 9th-Jan-2013 10:34 pm (UTC)
LOL... In the last post I made about this, someone non-sarcastically gave her props for kissing a black guy.
brucelynn 9th-Jan-2013 10:36 pm (UTC)
O_O

That person is probably in charge of ONTDHATESWHITES tbh

Juat.

Link.
evawhimsy 9th-Jan-2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
lol uh that comment wasn't quite as inflammatory as you present it.
holyfrijoles_2 9th-Jan-2013 10:33 pm (UTC)
This sounds like it could be interesting, but I'm kind of wary about this. If this is the only POC to get a role and it's basically used as a lesson on race it's going to feel like tokenism. If she keeps using POC in the rest of season 2 then I'll like Lena and the show more.

Also this entire conversation is going to make Hannah really unlikeable for me. Like, past the point of no return dislike.

that ship sailed for me since episode 1
holyfrijoles_2 9th-Jan-2013 10:39 pm (UTC)
The problem is I'm still not sure if we're supposed to dislike Hannah. If that's Lena's intention then my opinion of her writing is a lot higher. But if we're supposed to be rooting for her...
cerseilannister 9th-Jan-2013 10:43 pm (UTC)
mte. i find hannah to be obnoxious but i don't hate her character completely and it seemed like she was getting to a better place in the promos, but this shit i'm hearing is really grinding my gears.
troy_macclure 9th-Jan-2013 10:53 pm (UTC)
pretty much
treebraids 9th-Jan-2013 10:33 pm (UTC)
Let me guess, a white woman wrote this.
starchain 9th-Jan-2013 10:33 pm (UTC)
I came in because I thought there'd be more pictures of Donald Glover.
itscomicrelief 9th-Jan-2013 10:36 pm (UTC)
I've never watched more than 2 episodes of this show, but part of me feels like it's certain that outside that makeout session bit, all of Donald's scenes may be off camera.
cageyb 9th-Jan-2013 10:40 pm (UTC)
It says we open on them vigorously screwing, so I'm hoping we get skin.

I wanted to be Scrooge McDuck so bad...
whitewatergirl 9th-Jan-2013 10:35 pm (UTC)
Interesting. I wish I had HBO to see this. I finally saw Tiny Furniture and I was meh about it. I mean, it was good in its own way, and it felt so real, but then again, it felt real in a way that didn't cause any epiphanies in me. I wanted that.

So, has anyone been in an interracial relationship? How has that gone. My most recent ex-gf is latina and I'm white, and it partially caused a lot of issues for us.
marywebgirl 9th-Jan-2013 10:54 pm (UTC)
I'm white and my husband is Indian, and other than my in-laws being complete jerks about the wedding it's fine.
r0ckthec4sbah 9th-Jan-2013 11:07 pm (UTC)
How were they being jerks?
xgirldc 11th-Jan-2013 12:33 am (UTC)
i bet you have had / will have beautiful children. if that is something you want.
fusilli_head 9th-Jan-2013 11:08 pm (UTC)
I've been in one for the past five years. and it's not my first. he's white and I'm black/native. So far, he and I have not have any problems just between the two of us, but his grandmother absolutely hates me because of my race. I've never met/spoken to her but she's seen photos of us together and she constantly tells him that I'm a leech because I don't have a traditional job and he does. I actually do have a job, I'm an artist, but to her that doesn't count as real work, and apparently "colored people don't know anything about art".
dementedforte 9th-Jan-2013 11:17 pm (UTC)
i used 2 d8 a white boy and i'm half asian/half white. he liked to remind me how white i am bc he's dated full asian chicks b4. SHUT UP.
evawhimsy 9th-Jan-2013 11:17 pm (UTC)
asian girl dating white guy (i know, not exactly uncommon). it's fine, i make fun of him a lot for his family being so whitebread though. and he doesn't like to share food at restaurants which for a korean esp is freaking heinous.
daydream11 10th-Jan-2013 01:45 am (UTC)
I have. It was uneventful. My family was waaaayyy more pressed about him being an atheist, tbh. And he wouldn't hold my hand in public a lot of the time because we're in Alabama, but otherwise it wasn't something either of us commented on.
skizzylizard 10th-Jan-2013 04:09 am (UTC)
I'm multiracial black myself, so I come from an interracial relationship, and have been dating the whitest boy ever for twelve years.

It has gone really well, as far as race goes, because whenever I experience racism he doesn't try to invalidate it, and whenever I'm like "you have no idea what being a minority is like" he's just like "this is true" and doesn't turn into a cock like most whiteys.

Basically, we don't go out of our way to bring race up, but we also don't avoid it, and when it does come up he's really respectful. Which is how the entire world should work tbh
ronnie_luvs_u 9th-Jan-2013 10:36 pm (UTC)
I'm glad that she listened to some of the criticism and is trying to address it.
evawhimsy 9th-Jan-2013 11:18 pm (UTC)
