This is one of those plots where it's not a matter of coming up with a better solution (unless you really are that talented and inventive). You're better off just not trying to work with it.
Well obviously Meyer was ill-equipped skill-wise and personal ethics-wise to come up with anything approaching a satisfying and not-creepy conclusion, but I think there were ways this could have been handled and resolved that are only like 40% fucked up at most.
