'Aladdin' is Finally Coming to Broadway (in Spring 2014)

"Aladdin" is taking those three magical wishes to Broadway in a new stage show that will be substantially overhauled from an earlier version that premiered two years ago in Seattle.

The new version of the 1992 Disney animated hit will hit the Great White Way in spring 2014, according to an individual with knowledge of the production plans. It will replace "Mary Poppins" at the Disney-owned New Amsterdam Theater, the individual said.
The stage version of P.L. Travers' children's book will close in March 2013 after more than 2,600 performances.

A stage show of "Aladdin" that integrated the movie's original score by Alan Menken, Tim Rice and Howard Ashman premiered on stage at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre in 2011. Chad Beguelin ("The Wedding Singer") wrote the book for that production and Casey Nicholaw ("The Book of Mormon") directed and choreographed the show.

However, the version of "Aladdin" that hits Broadway next year will be substantially overhauled and will not be a transfer of the 5th Avenue production, the individual said. That show was seen as a pilot production, designed to test the new book and additional score material. The Broadway production will involve a major new key player on the creative team, the individual said.

A spokesman for The Disney Theatrical Group did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Although "Mary Poppins" is closing to make way for "Aladdin," it remains a moneymaker for Disney. Every year since it opened in 2006, it has ranked among the 10 highest grossing shows and among the five best attended. By the time it closes, it will have grossed more than $300 million, putting it on the level of other hits like "Jersey Boys" and "Wicked." It has also earned more than $835 million worldwide.

The North American tour of "Mary Poppins" will end in June 2013 in Anchorage.

The New York Post first reported that "Mary Poppins" will close and be replaced by "Aladdin."

That's is literally the first thing I thought about. Except they had all Black actors for The Lion King when they really didn't have to. I hope they cast Arabic actors.
wickedwatch 9th-Jan-2013 12:57 am (UTC)
I think it'll also depend who is running the show. Julie Taymor directed the Lion King and she was pretty insistent and conscious on having black actors cast especially cause of the setting, and African-inspired garb.

Chinese would do too since it's actually a Chinese tale. XDD

There will be a lot of pressure by Actor's Equity Association (large actor and stage manager union) to cast people according to their ethnicity in broadway shows if they're non-white . Because when Miss Saigon came to Broadway from West End there was a big stink over the Pryce recreating his role of The Engineer because the character is half French half Vietnamese and Pryce is white. Pryce still played The Engineer but only after Mackintosh threatened to cancel the entire show and they argued that Pryce had 'star status' meaning he could recreate his role without an American casting call. (They also argued since the character was half white, Pryce was being discriminated against which rme)

The Genie and like Abu and Iago may be white but all the main characters should be POC.

tl;dr: Chances are they will be appropriately casted but one never knows!

It'll probably be like The Lion King, tbh. All of the big leads (at least with the lions + Rafiki, who is actually played by a black woman on stage) are ALWAYS black and I think only Zazu and maybe Timon and Pumba have been white people.

Bway/West End >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hollywood at casting POC in roles and colorblind casting.

aglows 8th-Jan-2013 09:49 pm (UTC)
More details please! I saw videos online and it looked like a mess... and there was a golf cart at one point?
kattyerin 8th-Jan-2013 09:56 pm (UTC)
my 10 year old niece at the time and i both hated it and the only thing i really remember now were the new songs they added. ear bleeding. oh, and his friends instead of the monkey were not good. and lol, there might have been a golf cart, i don't remember it though. :(

idk what an overhaul will entail but i hope those songs get lost.
nemo_de_la_meer 8th-Jan-2013 09:58 pm (UTC)
THANK YOU. It WAS horrible. The only saving grace was having Jonathan Freeman in the role. Other than that, the songs added were awful (can see why they were scrapped), and the friends of Aladdin are annoying.

Damn it!
ocelot_summer 8th-Jan-2013 10:55 pm (UTC)

The version they do in California Adventure (or somewhere in Disneyland....I'm pretty sure it's California Adventure) was amazing - they should do something atune to that. I would have totally paid separately to go see that show.
stillglows 8th-Jan-2013 10:18 pm (UTC)
i was just about to come here to say that (and yup california adventure). i loved that show, especially the genie's improv. i think i ended up seeing it about four times? lol.

stillglows 8th-Jan-2013 10:19 pm (UTC)
/sobs. i currently work as an usher for a theatre company, and i got hired right after they finished doing next to normal. i'm so upset i missed out on it :(

my coworkers are always singing the songs too (so i just sit there and when they're done burst into avenue q instead).
djtino224 Re: EVERYONE SHOULD SEE "NEXT TO NORMAL"!!!!8th-Jan-2013 10:29 pm (UTC)
I saw it a couple years ago and holy shit. It gutted me. I wasn't expecting the twist, for those who have. Hit a little close to home.
ocelot_summer Re: EVERYONE SHOULD SEE "NEXT TO NORMAL"!!!!8th-Jan-2013 10:56 pm (UTC)
