For some reason, there's a Sin City sequel; JGL joins cast; Josh Brolin replaces Clive Owen

Yeah, we know. It was only this afternoon that we were talking about how hot Joseph Gordon-Levitt is at the moment, with franchises being thrown left and right at the actor. He's already passed on "Godzilla," and now he's turned down Marvel's "Guardians Of The Galaxy" for the chance to step into Robert Rodriguez's noir soaked world.

That's right, JGL is joining "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For," taking a lead role that was offered to Johnny Depp at one point. The actor will be play the character Johnny, a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game. Production is already underway, with Dennis Haysbert replacing the late Michael Clarke Duncan, Jamie Chung replacing Devon Aoki, with Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, and Jaime King among those returning. Clive Owen is still expected in some capacity, and Deadline points to Bruce Willis reprising a role as well, but nothing official has come down just yet. Meanwhile, the site also says Josh Brolin could be courted for a role too.

Now Brolin is confirmed. Dimension Films announced today that Brolin has joined the "Sin City" sequel cast as “Dwight," the character that Clive Owen played in the original film for co-directors Rodriguez and Frank Miller. Evidently there's still one more big part up for grabs. The part of the titular “Dame” has yet to be cast.

"Dwight is one of the favorite characters from Miller’s books and the 2005 film. In SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR, Dwight is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches his life go straight to hell. Chronologically, this story takes place prior to “The Big Fat Kill” (featured in the film FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY) and explains how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face."

"Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and "A Dame To Kill For" is a defining episode in his life. We're looking forward to Josh's take on Dwight," said Rodriguez and Miller.

Scariest Charlie Brown ever.
emptyobsidian 8th-Jan-2013 09:29 pm (UTC)
He was perfect in that role. One of the few things I remember about that movie, for some reason.

I know Frank Miller's a douchebag and all, but I basically love this movie, so I am HFT. Though I'd love to see Johnny work with RobRod again.
emtqueen85 8th-Jan-2013 10:23 pm (UTC)
Can somebody explain "HFT" to me, please?

Expecting Clive Owen and getting Josh Brolin instead sounds like a horrible tale of mail order husband purchasing gone wrong.
amkf 8th-Jan-2013 09:30 pm (UTC)
I think they're kind of interchangeable--both in looks and acting--nothing special.
zeldafitzgerald 8th-Jan-2013 09:48 pm (UTC)
I disagree, actually. Clive is aging pretty poorly whereas Josh is looking pretty good.
cuteej4 8th-Jan-2013 09:31 pm (UTC)
Clive hasn't done much lately. I feel like he dropped off the planet
lucky_latkes 8th-Jan-2013 09:28 pm (UTC)
I hope this sequel isn't crap. We have been waiting for so long...

No Clive Owen? No thanks.

Why did Clive drop out? I haven't seen him doing anything these days.
lipstickbitches 8th-Jan-2013 09:42 pm (UTC)
The character is supposed to look completely different. That's why they mention he has a new face in the first one. This is supposed to be a prequel
dubiously 8th-Jan-2013 09:43 pm (UTC)
Oic. I haven't read any of them.
flyingpigs_live 8th-Jan-2013 09:28 pm (UTC)
Josh brolin is a woman beater, right?
mellarks 8th-Jan-2013 09:31 pm (UTC)
Yes.

deathbytamarind 9th-Jan-2013 12:01 am (UTC)
Aw man really? So disappointing.
fromyourashes 9th-Jan-2013 02:45 pm (UTC)
People keep saying that, but I still can't find transcripts. I know he and Diane got into a screaming match, but nobody ever said anything about him hitting her. Where's all the info?
kajsa87 8th-Jan-2013 09:31 pm (UTC)
But... you cannot replace Clive Owen with Josh Brolin. :-(
blahblahcakes64 8th-Jan-2013 09:34 pm (UTC)
I know. :( Devastated.
honeebs 8th-Jan-2013 09:32 pm (UTC)
What the fuck is CO doing that he can't come back?
Bloody hell this is going to be shit.
timbershiver 8th-Jan-2013 09:33 pm (UTC)
I thought Dwight had major plastic surgery and that's why he has to be played by a different actor, of have I got that wrong?
amkf 8th-Jan-2013 09:35 pm (UTC)
I think you're right.
lipstickbitches 8th-Jan-2013 09:43 pm (UTC)
yup. this is a prequel
paranoiattaque 8th-Jan-2013 09:56 pm (UTC)
correct.
hazel_belle 8th-Jan-2013 09:34 pm (UTC)
Interesting.
madcowre 8th-Jan-2013 09:34 pm (UTC)
Glad JGL took this one and not the potential crap that is Guardians of the Galaxy :O
cuteej4 8th-Jan-2013 09:36 pm (UTC)
NGL, I'm glad JGL is getting a lot of offers and everything but I kind of feel like he sold out. He used to take really obscure roles and was really picky. Now I feel like he's just taking a lot of the big blockbuster type roles and isn't as picky.
madcowre 8th-Jan-2013 09:40 pm (UTC)
Seriously. I love him a lot but is there a movie this year he hasn't been in talks for?
lovelyeli 8th-Jan-2013 09:49 pm (UTC)
it happens to every up and coming actor..ryan gosling is the same sorta.

i don't mind it as long as they're quality blockbusters..(inception&Looper were good IMO), i hope he has a career like leo and gets to choose his own big movies.
loony_moony 9th-Jan-2013 12:20 am (UTC)
Really? Because he has made solid choices this year and that's why he's even mentioned for every movie for the next 5 years. Being mentioned does not equate being offered the movie. He is one smart fucking pretentious prince.
eerilybeloved 8th-Jan-2013 09:35 pm (UTC)
Didn't they recast Devon Aoki's character too? :\
amkf 8th-Jan-2013 09:37 pm (UTC)
Yes, with Jamie Chung. And Dennis Haysbert is replacing Michael Clarke Duncan, who died recently.
cuteej4 8th-Jan-2013 09:37 pm (UTC)
Yeap. It's in the article.
blahblahcakes64 8th-Jan-2013 09:38 pm (UTC)
With Jamie Chung, I guess.
300psychosis 8th-Jan-2013 09:47 pm (UTC)
Isn't she pregnant?
eerilybeloved 8th-Jan-2013 09:53 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure if she's pregnant again. I know she had a baby a year or two ago.
blazinguns 8th-Jan-2013 09:37 pm (UTC)
Damn @ Clive Owens's career. Getting replaced when you're the lead actor. I mean, apparently Devon Aoki no longer acts and Michael Clarke Duncan died...he just got the boot.

I remember rumours about the sequel starting right after the first one, with the production allegedly being witheld to wait until Angelina gave birth so that she would play "Dame". Seems like a forever ago.
cuteej4 8th-Jan-2013 09:37 pm (UTC)
And Brittany Murphy is gone too
300psychosis 8th-Jan-2013 09:44 pm (UTC)
I don't think he's getting replaced because he's Clive Owen. The character he played in Sin City had plastic surgery to change his appearance and I guess they are now going showing his 'original' face.
blazinguns 8th-Jan-2013 09:47 pm (UTC)
Could very well be so. There's always face prosthetics though if they truly wanted him. I can see why producers might feel he's not a strong enough name to carry the movie, though, with his career being where it is now.
lipstickbitches 8th-Jan-2013 09:46 pm (UTC)
he didn't get replaced. his bit in the sequel is a prequel to the first movie. his character underwent major plastic surgery and has to be played by a different character. It's in the article
