TCA: Surprise! The Following Taking Heat from Critics Over Violent Content

Having recently previewed several episodes of the show (yes, it's pretty badass), we kind of saw this one coming. Especially in the climate of the world we're currently living in. News has come that "The Following" is under fire due to its content. Joy.

Deadline reports "The Following" creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson was obliged to defend the jarring level of sex and violence (particularly violence) in his new Fox horror thriller as the network kicked off its day at TCA this morning. Critics peppered Williamson with questions about whether television shows like this one may be part of the problem with society.

“I think we all worry about [the violence issue],” Williamson admitted. “Who wasn’t affected by Sandy Hook? We [sat] in the writers room after that and were all traumatized by it. I know that when I put pen to paper, it affects me, but I’m not sure how,” Williamson said. “We don’t sit around [in the writers room] and think of ways to kill people.
I’m sitting and thinking of the drama. It’s meant to be a thriller and a provocative story. I guess it is a horrific and scary show but…”

Williamson acknowledged that the violence at Columbine many years ago absolutely inspired "The Following." “The story is shining a light on some of those kids,” he said. But he added that the show is meant to be “a work of fiction.” Thankfully the network hasn’t tried to scale back the level of violence, he maintained. The bigger struggle for him has been continuing to deal with the six-act structure of broadcast television and “how to make something scary when you’re writing to a commercial break.”

Keeping it all in perspective is Kyle Catlett, who plays the 6-year-old boy used as a pawn by James Purefoy's character's followers.
Per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he said, "I'm allowed to watch almost everything. With my mom's permission." His mother said afterward that the kid was correct. "Nothing scares him," she said. "He saw everything on the set and laughed at it. He knows the difference between make-believe and real life."

Out of the mouths of babes...

"The Following" will premiere on Monday, January 21st, at 9/8c.

Critics have been doing nothing but singing this show's praises since the summer. They've reviewed four episodes and were pretty much unanimous about how good this show is... but now it's what's wrong with society. Okay. At least the show is still getting buzz.

I just shoved a piece of white cheddar popcorn cake into my mouth and chewed it while scrolling down to see Jared Padalecki making the exact same face as I was, chewing in time and all. Thank you, OP.

Can't wait to see this gory, bloody, cringe-inducing fabulousness, though.
fabouluz 8th-Jan-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
white cheddar popcorn cake????? wtf?
fromyourashes 8th-Jan-2013 09:06 pm (UTC)
Yes? You've never heard of these????
dives 8th-Jan-2013 08:52 pm (UTC)
It can't be *that* gory if it's on network TV, but SVU, CSI etc have been making their living coming up with elaborate murders and rapes for years, so idk what people are complaining about.
la_petite_singe 8th-Jan-2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
True. SVU has totally gotten worse lately, what with this weird Criminal Intent-like showing of the actual crimes. O____o It makes no sense.
punishermax 8th-Jan-2013 09:00 pm (UTC)
SVU has always been the edgiest of the L&O. I imagine that since it's the only one left, they need to compete with CSI to keep itself going.
dives 8th-Jan-2013 09:27 pm (UTC)
That's actually the reason I don't like SVU. It always feels really ott and melodramatic, like part of the appeal of the show is from how crazy and convoluted the sexual assault is, and I don't like the idea of a show turning sexual assault into a melodrama. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's like, people already treat sexual assault as half a joke anyway, so making it really ott annoys me.

Which is odd, because I actually know someone who deals with similar work and their favorite L&O is SVU! But I think it's because the real-life cases they have to read are a thousand times worse anyway.
iamglory 9th-Jan-2013 12:25 am (UTC)
UGH...I can't with SVU anymore...and it pains me as I used to watch it like a religious person reading the bible! That didn't make sense but what ever.
vehiclesshockme 8th-Jan-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
Exactly.

I don't understand why people are shitting on this and then always singing the praises of SVU which is essentially Law & Order: Rape.
expromqueen 8th-Jan-2013 09:21 pm (UTC)
criminal minds has rly effed up stuff on it all the time
mooshki 9th-Jan-2013 02:18 am (UTC)

hoechlingurl 8th-Jan-2013 08:53 pm (UTC)
Annnndd now I want to see it. Thanks TCA for giving the show free press and piquing everyone's curiousity. Bacon is back bitches.
ragechill 8th-Jan-2013 08:55 pm (UTC)
Ugh Jared looks so ugly in that gif and I use to be so in love with him when he was on GG.

I'm really excited for this show.
vehiclesshockme 8th-Jan-2013 08:59 pm (UTC)
I think he looks good in the gif.

ragechill 8th-Jan-2013 09:05 pm (UTC)
His eyes look weird or something. Or maybe it's the way the gif is. I'm just noticing it, it's one of those stupid ones where part of it is not moving.
punishermax 8th-Jan-2013 08:56 pm (UTC)
I don't understand the critics point. What do they want? Do all shows need to be the Mystical Adventures of Henry Happy and the Fuzzy Dumpling Gang? OH NO THE SHOW HAS BLOOD OH NO SOCIETY HOW DARE YOU OH NO MY POOR EYES AND THE CHILDREN OH THE CHIIIIILDREN

WHAT?! TALK TO MY CHILDREN AND TEACH THEM ABOUT REALITY VS FANTASY? WELL, I, HOW DARE YOU!? I'LL PROTEST, IT'S NOT MY FAULT!
la_petite_singe 8th-Jan-2013 08:56 pm (UTC)
Fox = boo, evil!Purefoy = YAAAASSSSS

maria1221 9th-Jan-2013 10:13 am (UTC)
Your taste is flawless and I too look forward to watching a deliciously evil Purefoy on my screen.

/sexy English fucker
fabouluz 8th-Jan-2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
I am EXCITED to watch this show, I saw the ads for it and it looks good. I like Kevin Bacon tbh.

I think the talk of it being too violent is just pandering to conservative media, I don't get the critics doing that. There is 24 hour news on tv that shows violence 24/7, this is a one hour show once a week that you don't have to watch if you don't want to.

Anyway, I'm excited for it.
punishermax 8th-Jan-2013 08:58 pm (UTC)
No you see society is too violent and there fore censorship is what we need.

Overreaction, what do you mean?
ian_michael89 8th-Jan-2013 09:02 pm (UTC)
Hew critics, do some fucking research. Television, film, and video games do not spike a significant amount violence in people for them to go out and murder people(I'm talking about the general public, of course there are people in history who, accompanied with their mental illness have blamed media for their actions).

I swear I can't.
ian_michael89 8th-Jan-2013 09:02 pm (UTC)
Hey*
vehiclesshockme 8th-Jan-2013 09:03 pm (UTC)
Exactly. Although honestly even people who have blamed media, something was going to cause them to snap eventually anyway.
ian_michael89 8th-Jan-2013 09:13 pm (UTC)
Yup. With the amount of horror films and television I watch on the regular you'd think if media was affecting us then I'd be a full blown serial killer by now.
hazel_belle 8th-Jan-2013 09:03 pm (UTC)
It is a show about SERIAL KILLERS! Of course it is going to be fucking violent, what are they expecting cotton candy and puppies in a rainbow shower?
mankini 8th-Jan-2013 09:11 pm (UTC)
HAHA ICON. I love watching my birds' reactions to the new Furby.
hazel_belle 8th-Jan-2013 09:18 pm (UTC)
Furby would be serial killer no doubt, if it ever came to life. They are frightening sometimes.

What does your bird do?
iamglory 9th-Jan-2013 12:27 am (UTC)
I want to be in that rainbow shower!
theconsortiumxf 8th-Jan-2013 09:08 pm (UTC)
If it gets James Purefoy back on my tv idgaf what the shows about tbh.
fusilli_head 8th-Jan-2013 09:08 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty sure every piece of violent media is gonna be considered ~everything that's wrong with the world until americans get some damn sense about gun control.
expromqueen 8th-Jan-2013 09:22 pm (UTC)
if critics complain something is too violent or dark for tv that's usually a sign to me that i'm going to really enjoy it
ludmi_83 8th-Jan-2013 09:24 pm (UTC)
Can't wait for this show!!!
lovelyluna34 8th-Jan-2013 10:07 pm (UTC)
