*Update* on Paparazzo Killed Trying to Photograph Justin Bieber's Ferrari. Statement From Bieber.

Paparazzi have had nasty run-ins with pop star Justin Bieber, including a high-speed chase in July that prompted a city councilman to predict that such an encounter could end tragically. On Tuesday, a photographer, who thought he spied Justin Bieber sitting in his parked white Ferrari, was struck by oncoming traffic as he walked across a Los Angeles freeway to get back to his car after snapping photos.

An opportune picture of the 18-year-old celebrity can rake in hard currency -- but Bieber was not in the car at the time of the New Year's Day incident. California Highway Patrol officers had pulled over Bieber's vehicle Tuesday evening at an off-ramp of Interstate 405. The photographer spotted the sports car, parked his own vehicle across the street, crossed to get closer to Bieber's car and took photos of its occupants, said Los Angeles Police spokesman James Stoughton.

Officers told the man twice to return to his car, CNN affiliate KTLA reported. A car struck the paparazzo as he crossed back across the street to leave, Stoughton said. Authorities have not released his name.

"While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim," Bieber said in a statement.

"Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves.

where exactly is the apology in that statement?
sibilation 2nd-Jan-2013 10:56 am (UTC)
This. The statement was to (again) reiterate he was not driving his car at the time of the accident.

It's not an apology but he shouldn't be/have been expected to make a statement at all because the situation didn't involve him.
rolt_me 2nd-Jan-2013 11:23 am (UTC)
the car was Bieber's. that is being involved in the situation.
wentwarth 2nd-Jan-2013 11:28 am (UTC)
He wasn't there. He can't control every idiot who tries to take a picture of his car or property, so he isn't required to respond to this situation. It was decent of him to say what he did, though, but it wasn't necessary.

He shouldn't have given a statement where his property in some form or another lead to the death of someone, just totally ignored it. You'd make an A+ PR person.
wentwarth 2nd-Jan-2013 11:51 am (UTC)
I said he shouldn't have been EXPECTED to give a statement by anyone. That he chose to do so is nice of him. And it wasn't his property that led to the death of someone, it was their own stupid actions.

I'm not a PR person, nor am I interested in it. I'm talking about the reactions other people had to this dumb situation.

I don't know why you're being obtuse. Justin Bieber did not kill that man. Justin Bieber was somehow involved in that man's death. Ergo, Justin Bieber gave a statement regarding that man's death. Simple. And most of it was for his own benefit: to deny his involvement in his death and manipulate the story to change laws to benefit his own personal privacy.

...You're the one saying Bieber was involved and his car lead to the death of this man. I'm denying that. His car didn't fall on top of this guy, it was nearby when he was hit by another. It doesn't matter if the photographer was there to take pictures of Bieber and his car, that's not why he died, he died because he walked into the path of someone else's car. Even if Bieber was there, you couldn't say that he was involved just because the guy who died in an accident happened to be looking for him/wanted to take a picture of him. If someone goes to my house to see me and suffers an accident nearby, am I involved because they were at the sight of the accident because of me? What the hell is that logic?

Are you serious? Of course you are involved in the accident. I don't know how hard this is to understand. If you are a witness to a crime, you are involved; if your property was somehow involved in the circumstances that lead to the accident of a man, you are involved in the accident.

Are you serious? Bieber was neither the witness nor an owner of the property involved in the circumstances in this scenario, it wasn't his car that hit this guy. And in the scenario I just outlined, it's even more ridiculous to suggest that the person the other person wanted to see is involved.

He released a statement looking out of his own self interest. You can't have your car (and name) associated with the death of someone else, and not respond to the situation. It doesn't matter if he was there or not, the press headline is going to be "Justin Bieber.... Vehicular manslaughter... dead pap" His level of actual involvement is irrelevant.

given that if his personal privacy was being respected that man would still be alive, i don't see the problem tbh

all op is trying to do is give props to bieber for releasing a statement of compassion/sympathy/whatever for the photographer's family & friends even though he didn't have to.

ikr it's only denying him having anything to do with it. even BEFORE recognizing the fact that someone died for god's sake.
